［iPhone の登場 – New York Times］

「maclalala」は２回目のブログだ。

WordPress 上で 2007 年６月から１０か月の間掲載した。

ひとりのマックユーザーの目を通して見たマック年代記だ。

iPhone が登場して、アップルが元気づいた時期と重なる。

いろいろ試行錯誤を経て休載に至った。（その後別のブログへ移行した。）

休載後そのままになっていたものを、その後いただいたコメントを掲載するなど整理して、ブログとしては閉じることとした。

突然だが、ブログを休載したいと思う。

前のブログを中断する際に次のように書いた。

休んでいる間にいろいろ考えた。

いつの間にやら翻訳サイトみたいな形になってしまったが、これは必ずしも本意ではない。

いまのやり方を一度リセットして、ブログのあり方を考え直してみたいと思う。

結局は同じことの繰り返しだった。

あれこれ試行錯誤を重ねているが、自分のやりたかったこと、自分のできることが何なのか確たるものが掴めないままだ。

読者のひとりとしてあちこちサイトを巡ってみると、マックやアップルのニュースの花盛りだ。

海外記事の翻訳もどきという当ブログのような存在は、もう役割を終えたという気が強くしている。

しばらくサイトを閉じていろいろと考えてみたい。

１０か月という短い間だったが、このささやかな個人の試みに付き合ってくださった方々には心から感謝したい。

これまで読んでくださってありがとうございました。

またいつかどこかでお会いできることを祈念しつつ・・・

［Telecommuting］

WWDC 基調講演は完売だそうだ。

しかし誰もがみな Steve Jobs のようにプレゼン上手というわけではない。

マーケティングの達人でベストセラー作家の Seth Godin が、プレゼンについて心すべきことを説いている。

プレゼン当事者が心得べきこと

プレゼンターが原稿を読み、箇条書き（bullet points）のスライドを見せる・・・それが立派なプレゼンテーションだなどと考えているならあなたは間違っている。あるいはまた、出席者が他の出席者と交流する時間がほとんどなかったり、もっとひどい場合は、他のひとと交流したいという気を起こさせないようなら、それも間違っている。

If you think a great conference is one where the presenters read a script while showing the audience bullet points, you’re wrong. Or if you leave little time for attendees to engage with others, or worse, if you don’t provide the levers to make it more likely that others will engage with each other, you’re wrong as well.

セールスコールに来るひとは、相手につぎのようなことを期待している。準備ができていて、話も絞られ、熱心で、次に話を進める気があること。もしそうでないのなら、会ったりなんかすべきではない。

Here’s what someone expects if they come to see you on an in-person sales call: that you’ll be prepared, focused, enthusiastic and willing to engage honestly about the next steps. If you can’t do that, don’t have the meeting.

同様に、直接話を聞くためにわざわざやって来た聴衆に対して、スピーカーは原稿を読めば分かること以上のものを与える義務がある。プレゼンテーションのオーガナイザーも、出席者に対して、サプライズや、いろんな考え、ドラマ、相手への関わり、持ち帰るべき土産、それにできれば刺激といったものを与える義務があるのだ。

Here’s what a speaker owes an audience that travels to engage in person: more than they could get by just reading the transcript.And here’s what a conference organizer owes the attendees: surprise, juxtaposition, drama, engagement, souvenirs and just possibly, excitement.

家にいる方がまし

たくさんの間仕切りオフィスで働く、たくさんの社員がいる大きな会社で三度も仕事をしたことがある。終日あちこち歩き回って過ごしたものだ。それが仕事だと思っていた。席に座ったまま仕事らしくみえることをやっていたのは、仕事が一番はかどっていないときだった。わざわざオフィスまで来させて、間仕切りの中に座らせ、タイプさせるなんて、なんでそんなことをするのかサッパリ分からなかった。

I’ve worked in three companies that had lots of people and lots of cubes, and I spent the entire day walking around. I figured that was my job. The days where I sat down and did what looked like work were my least effective days. It’s hard for me to see why you’d bother having someone come all the way to an office just to sit in a cube and type.

人とじかに顔を突き合わせるために時間とカネをかけているのなら、ちゃんとそうすべきだ。そうできないのなら、家にいた方がましだ！

The new rule seems to be that if you’re going to spend the time and the money to see someone face to face, be in their face. Interact or stay home!

今日の在宅勤務は、オフィスで仕事をするのに比べてはるかに難しいというのが本当のところだ。もちろんどこからでもインターネットに繋がる環境はますます整備されつつあるが、電話会議で質問しようとしたり、ビデオ会議での討論に苦労し、共通のポータルである Sharepoint サーバで悪戦苦闘するのに比べれば、実際に顔と顔を突き合わせ、チームで作業しながら価値を生み出す方がはるかにやさしいのだ。

The truth of the matter is that today, working from Anywhere is much harder than working in an office. Despite the wonders of ever-increasing ubiquitous connectivity, most of us are still a whole lot better at creating value as a team when we can interact face to face rather than asking questions during conference calls, struggling to discuss a topic over a videoconference, or fighting through a Sharepoint server.

たかだか１０年の知恵だ

人類が村の広場でたき火を囲んで何世代にもわたって培（つちか）ってきたやり方に頼るほうが、たかだか１０年しか経っていない［インターネットの］やり方よりはるかに容易だ。新しく学習したスキルを使って、遠く離れていても眼前に相対している（in person）のと同じような効果を得るためには、意識的な努力と強固な決意が必要なのだ。

It’s always easier to draw on the tools we humans learned from generations sitting around the communal fire than on ones that only have arrived on the scene in the last decade. It takes conscious effort, newly learned skills, and dogged determination to have the same impact at a distance as we might have in person.

心に残る文章がある。

記事を追っかけるのもそんな文章に会いたいからだ。

特ダネのトップニュースだからではない。鬼面人を驚かすタイトルのせいでもない。

読む前と読んだ後ではモノが違ってが見える、そんな記事に出会いたいのだと思う。

心のどこかに引っかかって、ずっと後になってまた読みたいと思う。

アップルやマックにこと寄せているが、実はそんな文章を求めているのではないかという気がする。

そんな記事を見つけたらどうするか・・・

それが問題だ。

どうしたらいいのか、試行錯誤をつづけている。

［Peter Steiner’s Cartoon］

雑誌 The New Yorker（1993 年７月）に載った Peter Steiner のマンガ。

そのキャプションは：

“On the Internet, nobody knows you’re a dog.”

インターネットじゃ犬だってことは誰にも分らない。

インターネットというバーチャル空間での存在は現実空間の実体からは隔離されている。そんなインターネットの匿名性を示す例として一躍有名になった。

ひょっとすると・・・

そういえば、当ブログの主（あるじ）を実際に見知っているのは家族だけだ。

病気のあと立ち上げて、１０か月が経った。

マックのことなぞ興味ない家族は、健康のためなんとかブログを辞めさせようとしたがそれもかなわず、今では健康チェックの代わりに利用している。

ブログが更新されている間は倒れず元気だというわけ・・・

身体が弱く、あちこち不自由だ。おまけに人見知りする質（たち）で引き篭り症候群ときている。

そんな身体でも、インターネットのバーチャル空間にいる限り何の不自由もない。日本の片隅から世界中どこにでも飛んでいける。

現実空間では不自由なのに、ブログというバーチャル空間では何の支障もないところがおもしろい。

Internet Dog とはよくいったもの。当ブログの主だって、ひょっとすると犬かもしれない・・・

１００万ヒット

そんなブログが、いつの間にやらアクセス１００万ヒットをこえた。

よくぞここまでこれたものと感無量だ。

これだけの数の読者の目に触れることができたのは幸せのひと言に尽きる。

ブログ読んでくださった読者の方々、折にふれ当ブログを紹介してくださった方々に心よりお礼申し上げる。

そもそもは・・・

そもそもは、ブックマークやコピーを集めた自分用のメモだった。

ネットでみつけたおもしろそうな記事を、あとで探しやすいようにまとめたのが始まりだ。（後に立ち上げた別館 maclalala:annex が原型に近い。）

ネットにはおもしろい話題が溢れているのに、なぜマック系メディア（雑誌、サイト、ブログ）では取り上げてもらえないのだろうかと考えるようになった。

気がついたら、そんな記事の一端を紹介するブログを始めていた。

そしていつの間にか翻訳もどきのサイトになっていたというわけ・・・

賢明な読者

まったくの素人の、個人的営為（えいい）であるという意味で、錚々（そうそう）たる諸先達のマックブログとは大いに異なる。

マック好きということでは人後に落ちない自信があるが、それを除けばまったくの素人。

ユーザーの視点に立つといえば格好いいが、技術的なことはとんと不得手だ。知識もなければ権威もなく、開陳すべき意見も持たない。

ひたすら海の向こうのおもしろそうな記事を探してくるだけだ。

おもしろいかどうかの判断も、すべては賢明な読者の手に委ねられている。

変わるマックブログの世界

ブログを始めた頃に比べると、マックを取り巻く環境も大きく変わってきた。

主流メディアでマックやアップルのことを取り上げない日はなくなった。

マックブログの世界も花盛りだ。日本最大のマックブログアグリゲータ Apple-Style をちょっと覗くだけで、その百花繚乱ぶりは明らかだ。ベテランだけでなく中高生に至るまで、その活躍ぶりには目を見張るものがある。

オリジナル（英文のことが多い）に当たって書かれる記事も大幅に増えた。

小学校でも英語を教えるご時世。英語だからといって特別扱いする必要はなく、みな当然のこととしてそんな記事を探し、読むようになった。

海外記事の翻訳もどきという当ブログのような存在は、もうその役割を終えたのではないかという気がしている。

さて・・・

現在のサイトに移ってきたとき、それまでとは異なるブログのあり方を模索しようとした。

しかし、結局は代わり映えのしない状態のままだ。

これを機に少し時間をいただいて、どういうあり方が望ましいのか考え直してみたいと思っている・・・

マックワールド誌編集者 Rob Griffiths の自作マック記事は大きな反響を呼んだ。

その後マックワールド誌は、趣味の自作者という「自作コミュニティ」（Homebuilt Mac Community）についてさらなる問題提起をしている。

つい最近、私は自作マック（Homebuilt Mac）に関する記事を書いた。今回は自作マックがアップルのビジネスに与える影響について私の考えを述べてみたい。・・・その上で、読者諸氏がこの「自作コミュニティ」についてどう考えるかお尋ねしてみたいのだ。

I recently chronicled my adventures building and using a homebuilt Mac. Now it’s time to step back and opine on how I think homebuilt Macs impact Apple’s business…and ask you, our readers, what you think Apple should do about this community.

アップルのビジネスに悪影響を与えるか

まず最初の質問は、熱狂的マック自作ファン（Homebuilt Mac enthusiasts）がアップルのビジネスに悪影響を与えると心配すべきかどうかという問題だ。部品を集めることから始めて、パーツをコンピュータにくみ上げ、それから OS X が動くように一生懸命頑張る、それをアップルが心配すべきかどうかと聞かれれば、私の答えはノーだ。アップルは趣味の自作者（hobbyist builders）を恐れる必要はない。本当だ。私の場合、強力なクヮッドコアマシンを作るため 982 ドルを投じた。それだけではない。バーツを探し、買い求め、マシンを組み立て、ちゃんと動くようにするのに多大の時間を費やした。私が費やした時間を計算に入れれば、すてきな iMac を買ってそれで済ませた方が（経費的にも）ずっとよかったことは明らかだ。しかもこのマシンの保証はひとつでないので、ひとたびハードの問題が生じた場合は複数のベンダーを相手にせざるを得なくなる点も考えておく必要がある。

The first question to ask is whether or not Apple should fear the impact these homebuilt Mac enthusiasts may have on their business. Given that one has to start with a collection of parts, assemble those parts into a computer, then work quite diligently to make that computer an OS X-enabled machine, my general answer is “no,” Apple need not fear the hobbyist builders. True, I spent only $982 to build a powerful Quad-core machine…but I also spent a large number of hours searching for and buying the parts, assembling the machine, and making it all work. If you add in the value of my time, it’s clear that I would’ve been much better off (financially) just buying a nice iMac and calling it done. Also consider that the finished machine has not one but many warranties, and that any hardware issues may mean dealing with multiple vendors.

自作マックが文字通り自分用のマックを作るというものである限り、アップルが恐れることは何もないと思う。趣味の自作者たちが自分のためのマシンを作っても、アップルの毎期の売り上げに影響を与えるものでないことは明らかだ。そもそもそんな大きな苦労をしてまで自作マックを製作し、それをメンテして、アップルの収益に影響を与えようとするひとがそんなにいるわけはない。（Psystar のマッククローンビジネスは、すぐにもアップルから訴訟を起こされると思われる。もしそれを生き延びたとしたらそれはまた別な話だ・・・）

As long as building your own Mac requires literally building your own Mac, I don’t think Apple has anything to fear—hobbyists and tinkerers may choose to build their own machines, but this is clearly nothing that will have any sort of impact on Apple’s quarterly sales. There just aren’t that many people out there willing to go all of the effort required to build and maintain a do-it-yourself-Mac to have a real bottom-line impact on Apple. (If Psystar’s pre-built Mac clone business survives its probably-imminent legal challenge, then that may be a different story.)

もし［自作マック］コミュニティがアップルに対して大きなマイナスを与えるものではないとしたら、熱狂的マック自作ファンたちに対してアップルは何らかの措置を講じる必要があるのだろうか？

So if the community isn’t going to have a tremendous negative impact on Apple, what, if anything, should Apple do regarding these homebuilt Mac enthusiasts?

その１：無視する

ひとつの方法は、これら趣味のハッカー（hobbyist hackers）をまったく無視することだ。これまでアップルはそうしてきたように思える。アップルに実質的影響を与えるわけではないので、ホビイストと争うことは有益というよりむしろ面倒の方が多い。アップルがこういうグループを無視してきたことを示す証拠はあるだろうか。例えばそのひとつとして、OSx86 プロジェクトをウェブから駆逐しようとしなかったことが挙げられる。OSx86 プロジェクトのサイトは、generic PC［ホワイトボックス PC、無印  PC］で OS X を走らせるための事実上の情報源（de facto source）となっている。

One approach—which appears to be the approach Apple’s taken thus far—is to simply ignore these hobbyist hackers. Since there’s no real measurable impact on Apple, fighting the hobbyists may be more trouble than it’s worth. What evidence do we have to support the theory that Apple is ignoring this segment thus far? For one, there’s been no apparent effort to remove the osx86 project web site, which is the defacto source for information on running OS X on generic PCs.

自作者たちを無視すべきだと考えるもうひとつの理由は、長い目で見れば、結局これらのユーザーはアップルのハードの売り上げを増加させる可能性があるからだ。例えば自作マックを作った連中は、システムアップデートの都度それに遅れず付いていくために必要な作業がいやになり、本物のマックを買おうと決心するかもしれないからだ。あるいはまた、それほど技術に詳しくない友人に対して OS X の良さを説き、次に買うときは iMac か他のアップルマシンにするように薦めるかもしれないのだ。

Another reason to ignore the homebuilders is that, in the long run, in fact, this group of users may actually help increase Apple’s hardware sales—people who build their own Mac may then decide they’re tired of the work required to keep up with system updates, for instance, and decide to purchase a real Mac. Or perhaps they’ll tell their less-technically-inclined friends about the benefits of OS X, and recommend that they purchase an iMac or other Apple product for their next machine.

その２：相手を取り込む

［無視する代わりに］もうひとつの方法として、自作者のコミュニティを取り込むというやり方もある。問題はどんな方法でやるかということなのだが・・・。OS X の新しいバージョンをアップル以外のコンピュータでもインストールできるようにするか。マザーボードと無印 PC パーツ（generic PC parts）だけという「Mac Lite」を実際に出してみるか。自作マシンのために限られた組み合わせの CPU とマザーボードを認めてやるか。あるいはまったく別のやり方をするか・・・

Alternatively, Apple could embrace the homebuilt community…but the question would be how. Would that be a new version of OS X that doesn’t restrict installation to an Apple-labeled computer? An actual line of “Mac Lite” machines that are basically motherboards and generic PC parts? Sanctioning a few combinations of motherboards and CPUs for people to use as a basis for building their own machines? Something else entirely?

考えてみればアップルの源流のひとつは Homebrew Computer Club にあったわけで、自作マックもその流れを汲むといえるのかもしれない。

さっそくマックワールド誌ラボテストの結果が出た。

予想どおりのすばらしいものだが、最後の感想が印象的だ。

この自作マシンは確かに目覚ましいパフォーマンスを示している。これから考えるに、もしアップルが例の「ミッドレンジのマックミニタワー」（mid-range Mac minitower）を出したら、きっと大変なパフォーマンスに違いない。

… this particular build-it-yourself system definitely delivers impressive performance, perhaps suggesting how a mythical mid-range Mac minitower would perform if Apple ever released one.

ブログで稼ぎたいと考えるのは常人の常だろう。

ところが、そんなことはムリだ、広告主の目から見ると広告を出すに値するブログなんてほとんどないのだから、という強烈な指摘がある。

ブログで稼ぐべきだと考えるブロガーが大変多いことにいつも驚かされる。

It’s routinely shocking to me that so many bloggers think they should try and make a profit from their Web site.

その願いは見当違いだ。ほとんどの場合、頭を冷やして現実を直視した方がいい。

Their hopes are misguided, and for most, a serious reality adjustment is needed.

トラフィックが足りない

ほとんどのサイトは、ちゃんとした収益を生み出すだけのトラフィックがない。１日当たりのユニークビジターが 1000 人という中程度のブログで、１インプレッション［impression：ウェブ広告の表示回数］当たり１セントを稼ぐとしても、１日に稼げる額はたったの１０ドルだ。１クリックスルー［click-through：リンクの張られた広告をクリックしてその企業のホームページにアクセスする数］当たり２５セントとすると、同じ１０ドルを稼ぐにはビジターの４％が広告をクリックする必要がある。広告のクリックスルー料金は普通は１％のさらに１０分の１程度といったところだ。したがって実際に稼げる額はずっとこれより少ない。１桁上のレベルになっても人生が変わるほどのカネは稼げない。最初に越えるべきハードルは月額１００ドルだが、グーグルから１００ドルの小切手を貰うのに何が月もかかったというブロガーの話はネット中に溢れている。

Most sites are not big enough, traffic-wise, to generate significant revenue. Assuming a mid-size blog gets about 1,000 unique visitors per day, and an ad delivers 1 cent per impression, you’re only talking ten dollars a day. If you’re instead getting 25 cents for a click-through, you would need 4 percent of your visitors to click on an ad to achieve that same ten bucks. And advertising click through rates are usually in the low tenths of a percent, let alone full percents, so most numbers would actually be much less than this. Even if you move any of the dials up by a factor of ten, you’re not talking about life-changing money. The Web is full of stories around bloggers who took months to get their first $100 check from Google, the barrier for payment.

広告主が興味を感じるブログはほとんどない

ほとんどのブログは広告主に興味を感じてもらえない。例えばテクノロジー系ブログで本当に必要なブロガーは何人いるだろうか。最新のニュースをもたらしてくれるブログ、他のひとにはなし得ないユニークな視点をユニークな読者に対して提供してくれるブログ、もし辞めてしまったらほかの誰にもできないブログ、そんなブログは一体どれほどあるだろうか。そんなに数はない。トップファイブやトップテンを除けば、広告主を惹き付けて、投資する気を起こさせるブログなんてないのだ。トップテンにはいるブログですら、記事の本数を増やそうと苦労するのはバカげている。RSS リーダーを見れば、せいぜいプレスリリースや他人のブログを読んだり、決算報告のカンファレンスコールを聞く程度で、オリジナルの記事なぞ書けない連中（真面目ではあるかもしれないが）の似たりよったりの記事がひしめいているのだから・・・

Most sites don’t have real significant differentiation interesting to an advertiser. If you look in the tech world, just how many tech bloggers do we really need? How many of them are breaking stories or offering a unique angle for a unique audience that nobody would serve if they completely pulled up stakes and disappeared? Not too many. With the exception of about the top five or ten blog networks, no tech blog offers enough of a pull that an advertiser would consider them a must to invest with. And even among the top networks, the rush to publish is becoming silly to watch, as my RSS feed reader will fill up with near-identical stories, usually written by people who haven’t done any original reporting beyond reading a press release, other blogs, or listening to a financial earnings call, if they’re really serious.

音楽の場合とは大違い

E-Consultancy サイトではもっとあからさまにいっている。「ほとんどのブログは１セントすら稼いでいない。音楽に対してはグローバルな需要があるのに比べれば、ほとんどが文章下手なテクノロジー系ブログに対する需要なんてまったく色褪せてしまう。」

On the E-Consultancy Web site, this issue is bluntly addressed:”Most bloggers don’t make a cent from blogging and the global demand for mostly poorly-written blogs about technology news pales in comparison to the global demand for music.”

ブロガーなんて１ダース１０セント

一部のブロガーは、書くことは天から与えられた権利であると考え、少しばかりの広告を載せることで荒稼ぎしようとする。私の考えでは、書かれたコンテンツなんてタダ同然だ。まったくコストがかからないし、かかるものといえば紙ないし画面に書くための時間だけだ。ジャーナリズムの世界では書く気のあるライターを探すのはそんなに難しいことではない。その一方、読者や広告主となると払底している。新聞の購読数が激減し、新聞記者がクビになっている状況がそれに火をつけているからだ。グーグルは巨大な収益を上げているが、オンラインでもルールは同じなのだ。ブロガーなんてせいぜい１ダース１０セントだ。重要な読者を抱え、他とは差別化されたユニークなブログなんて、広告主の目から見るとないも同然だ。一日の投稿数を増やしても何の解決にもならない。成功を収めている大きなブログの後追いをしてもダメだ。スパムやトラックバックをしまくっても役には立たない。

Yet, some bloggers act as if it’s their God-given right to write, post a few ads and start raking in cash. In my opinion, content is absolutely cheap. It costs nothing, except time, to put text on paper or computer screen. In the world of journalism, finding willing reporters for newspapers hasn’t really been much of a problem. Instead, there’s a dearth of readers, and advertisers, which the Web has helped accelerate, as paper circulations dive and reporters are laid off. And while Google is reporting great earnings, the same rules will hold true online. Bloggers are a dime a dozen in most cases. Those that offer non-unique blogs without significant audience or differentiation might as well not exist as far as ads are concerned. Delivering more posts per day won’t fix that. Following the big, successful networks won’t do that. Spamming and trackback abuse won’t fix that.

ブロガーは真の価値を生み出していない

業界の周辺部にいるブロガーの中には、企業合併や買収、出資に伴い動く金額をみて妬みを感じるものもいる。そんな事業が何百万ドルものカネで買収されるのを見て、その話をカバーしている自分も応分の「分け前」に与りたいと考えるのは至極もっともな人間の性（さが）だ。しかし、Facebook や Digg、TechMeme といったサイトはそれ自体が最終目的地サイト（destination sites）であり、ひとを惹き付け、ひっきりなしに読者やリピーターを引きつけるサイトなのだ。そんなサイトに個人情報や人口動態情報が加われば、それに向けて広告やメッセージを加工し直すだけの価値が生まれるというわけだ。こういうサイトは、我々がお互いに影響を与え、情報を交換するやり方を変えることによってウェブに対して真の価値を生み出している。ブロガーは（私を含めて）そうではないのだ。どちらかといえば、我々は生産者より消費者に近く、私が以前調べた限り、消費者はカネを貰うのではなく、支払う側なのだ。どれだけその製品についてエキサイトしていても・・・

Sometimes bloggers on the periphery of an industry get jealousy over seeing the dollars thrown around from mergers and acquisitions, or funding. It is human nature to see when a service might be bought for millions, that fans of the service or bloggers covering it feel they are entitled to a “share”. But Web services like Facebook, Digg, or TechMeme are in themselves destination sites that are sticky, pulling in consistent viewers and repeat visits, made even better when these sites have personal, demographic information that helps tailor ads and messaging. These Web services are adding real value to the Web by changing the way we interact and communicate. Bloggers, myself included, are not. We are more like consumers than producers in this case, and the last time I checked, consumers pay, they don’t get paid, no matter how excited we might be about a product.

運営コストがカバー出来るか

仲間のブロガーはこの問題についてこういっている。「わたしにとって『フェアである』とは、サイトを運営するコストがカバーできて、ときたま自分に何かご褒美を買ってやれるということだ。今のところそう出来ており、それで十分だ。運営コストすらカバーできなくなったらブログを辞める。」

In a recent discussion on this topic, a blogging peer of mine said, “What’s “fair” to me is making enough to cover hosting costs and buy myself some toys every once in a while. I do that, which is enough. But if I couldn’t even cover hosting costs, I’d stop blogging.”

目的は他にあって然るべき

私の場合、どう考えても「フェア」ということばは当てはまりそうにない。ブロガーとしていえば、広告業界も、読者も、なんら自分たちに借りはない。始めたいと思えば、始めるのは自分たちの自由だ。書く内容も自分たちで決められる。どのブログサービスを選ぶかも自分たちの自由だ。ブログのレイアウトも自分たちで決める。どんなプラットフォームについて書き、どんなスケジュールで書くか決めるのも自分たちだ。「当然の分け前」という考えが当てはまる余地はどこにもない。［ブログの］目的は他にあって然るべきなのだ。個人的なことかもしれない、趣味かもしれない、「次の」仕事までのつなぎかもしれない、辞めずに書きつづける練習かもしれない、あるいはコミュニティのみんなを楽しませるためかもしれない。

And to me, I don’t possibly see how the word “fair” can come into play. As bloggers, the ad industry, and our readers, truly owe us nothing. If we have opted to start writing, it is on our own choice. What we write about? Again, our choice. Where we opt to be hosted? Usually our choice. Our page layouts? Our choice. Our blogging platform or schedule? Our choice. So how does “fair” come into it? The goals must be somewhere else, whatever they may be for the individual, be it a hobby, setting up for the “next” job, continued writing practice, or enjoying the community.

数セントが応分

広告収入というパイの「正当な」分け前を声高に求めるブロガーが何百万人といる。グーグルがベンダーから何十億ドルと荒稼ぎする一方で、一見不平等にみえる分け前について非難の声を上げる群小のブロガーがいる。しかし考えるに、広告ということに関する限り、これらのブロガーはちゃんと彼らに相応しい額、すなわち「数セント」という金額をしっかり得ているのではないだろうか。これらのブロガーは、自分のサイトから広告の類いを一切取り除いて、ほかの金儲けの方法を探した方がずっといいのではないかと思う。いくらブログをやっても、望むようなカネは決して手に入らないのだから・・・

There are millions of bloggers out there today, screaming for their “fair” share of the advertising pie. And while Google rakes in cash from vendors by the billions, some smaller bloggers are crying foul at the perceived inequalities. But it’s more likely they are getting exactly what they deserve when it comes to ads – pennies. They would be better served to pull the ads off their site altogether and find different ways to make money, because for most, blogging will never get them what they want.

Lioncourt.com というサイトがある。

盲目ないし視覚に障害があるひと（the blind and visually impaired）に役立つ情報を扱うサイトだ。

特段変わったところもなく、普通のサイトのように見える。実はこのサイトを運営しているのは盲目のプログラマーなのだ。

その彼が今週のマックワールド誌のポッドキャストに出演している。

最初の話題は、視覚に障害がある、あるいは盲目のマックユーザーに対して OS X がもたらしたあまりよく知られていない恩恵についての話だ。ポッドキャストに登場するのは、盲目のプログラマーで、かつ Lioncourt.com を運営している Josh de Lioncourt だ。Lioncourt.com は、視覚障害者のマックユーザーに対して、ツールとしてのマックが如何にすばらしい機能を備えているか明らかにしようとするサイトだ。

The first is the under-reported benefits that OS X brings to visually impaired and blind Mac users. Iﾕm joined by Josh de Lioncourt a blind developer and operator of Lioncourt.com, a Mac-accessibility Web site, who reveals just how capable the Mac is as a tool for visually disabled users.

Josh’s Lioncourt.com is a great resource for those visually impaired Mac users but there are others. Apple offers its own accessibility page with links to a variety of resources. Josh also mentioned the Screenless Switchers podcast, a podcast produced by Darcy Burnard and Holly Anderson, two visually impaired women who’ve moved from Windows to the Mac.

Josh de Lioncourt の生き生きした話を聞いていると、とても盲目のプログラマーとは思えない。

ここで語られるのは健常者とは異なったユーザー体験だ。「使いやすさ」（ease of use）ということについて改めて考えさせられる。

マックが彼らに対してすばらしい体験を提供していると知ってうれしい。そしてそういう話に光を当てるマックワールド誌もまたすばらしいと思う。

ずいぶん昔（Mac OS 6 の時代だった！）、盲人用の点字フォントを試作したことがある。

健常者がひらがなで書いた分かち書きのテキストを点字変換する。文章解析のアルゴリズムを使わず、フォントそのものに変換機能を持たせたので瞬時に変換した。

Josh のポッドキャストを聞きながら、昔のことを思い出した。

［Psystar office?］

マッククローンを売り出すという Psystar については不明なことが多すぎるようだ。

Forbes が Psystar 社長との電話インタビューに成功して、その話を記事にしている。

Psystar 社長の Rudy Pedraza と電話で語ったところ、［新しい事業はネット詐欺ではないかという非難に対して］Psystar はホンモノだという。「それはまったくの間違いだ。我々はひとからカネを巻き上げようとしているのではない。正当に稼ぎたいだけだ。」

彼の言い分は、需要の大きさに会社が圧倒されたというのだ。クレジットカードの処理件数が膨大なものとなったため、クレジット請求を扱う PowerPay が彼の口座を凍結してしまった。新しく PayPal に変えてみたが、それもすぐにパンクしてしまった。

His explanation? The company has been overwhelmed by demand. He says his credit card processor, PowerPay, locked down his account for processing too many credit cards. When he turned to PayPal, Pedraza says Psystar’s account with the online payments specialist was quickly overloaded, too.

Pedraza explains the address changes by saying he had to move the company into a 40,000-square-foot warehouse. “We have thousands of machines we have to build and ship out,” Pedraza says.

Still, Pedraza is short on the sorts of details most startups won’t shut up about. He won’t go on the record about his educational background, detail his professional history or name any previous ventures. The company’s Open Computer is based on a machine put together by his brother (whom he won’t name), he says. Nor will he say how the new computer works. He will say the company has 16 employees, and he just hired four more.

Psystar はどうやら怪しげな気配になっているようだ。

ところがクローンマックの話は思わぬところへ飛び火した。なんとマックワールド誌の Rob Griffiths がやってのけたのだ。

市販の PC パーツから Mac OS X が動く自家製マックを組み立ててしまった！

マックワールド誌の編集者で、常々「中クラスの Mac minitower」を渇望していた Rob Griffiths は、次のようにいう。

モニター一体型のマシンは欲しいとは思わないし必要もない。８コア Mac Pro のパワーも必要ない。しかしミニより速くて拡張性のあるマシンなら欲しい。

I don’t want or need a machine with a built-in monitor, I don’t need the power of an eight-core Mac Pro, but I’d like my Mac to be faster and more expandable than a mini. [...]

しかし私のドリームマシンが出るのを待つのはもう待ちくたびれた。そこで自分の手で組み立てようと決心した。かくて OS X が動く自分のマシンを組み立てることになった。

Tired of waiting and hoping for the Mac of my dreams to appear, I decided to take the technology into my own hands and build it myself. And thus began my experiment to assemble my very own OS X-running machine.

PC パーツを集める

かくて、1000 ドルの範囲内で自家製マックを組み立てるプロジェクトに取りかかる。

Windows Vista が動く PC パーツで、かつ Mac OS X も動くパーツを集めるのが最初の仕事だ。

マザーボードは Asus P5K-E、CPU は Intel Q6600 Core 2 Quad（2.4GHz）。モニターやキーボードを除いて、集めたパーツは 980 ドルになった。

ハードそのものの組み立てはやさしかった。

OS X のインストールは大変だ

次にこの PC に Vista をインストールした。ちゃんと動く。それからが事だった。ちゃんと OS X が動くようにするのに何時間もかかった。やることは簡単なのだが、その手間や BIOS 設定が込み入っていた。同じドライブから Windows と OS X を動かすには、いくつもの難題を片付けねばならなかった。何時間もかけて、説明書を読み、組み立てては分解し、うめき声をあげ、インストール、アンインストール、再インストールを繰り返し、悪態をつき、みんなを困らせる。とても楽しいどころではなかったが、それでもなんとかすべてを終えることが出来た。私のマシンはちゃんと動いた。Windows Vista にでも Mac OS X 10.5.2 にでも、どちらにでも起動することができた。

Next, I installed Vista on the PC, just to be sure everything worked. From there, it then took many more hours to get OS X working right—while the process is relatively straightforward, there are a lot of steps involved, and BIOS settings to tweak. If you want to run Windows and OS X on the same drive, there are more hoops to jump through to get it all working. But after many hours of reading, assembling, disassembling, screaming, installing, uninstalling, reinstalling, saying bad words, pestering friends, and generally not having very much fun, I was done: my machine was up and running, and capable of booting into either Windows Vista or Mac OS X 10.5.2.

Frankenmac

出来上がった自家製マックは Frankenmac［注：フランケンシュタインから］と名付けられた。

テキストベースのブートローダ

起動中にこのマシンの前に座っていると、 BIOS のロードスクリーンになり、テキストベースのブートローダ（ここで Vista にするか OS X にするかを選択する）になる。それが普通のマックとは異なるところで、試供品のサンプルみたいだ。

And if you happen to be sitting in front of it when it starts up, the BIOS loading screen and black-and-white text-based boot loader (which lets me choose between Vista and OS X) is a dead giveaway that this is not your normal Mac.

Frankenmac の本体を隠してモニターだけを見ていると、まったく普通のマックと変わらない。

しかし「この Mac について」ダイアログを見ると、「プロセッサ不明」（”unknown” processor）と表示される。

Rob Griffiths のベンチマークテストでは、値段が倍以上する Mac Pro と比べてもさして引けを取らないという。いずれマックラボのテストに委ねるそうだから、後ほど詳細が分るだろう。

とてもみんなには勧められない

以上の結果をみて「スゴいっ！ボクもやってみよう！」と考えるひとがいるかもしれない。ちょっと待て！自家製マックにはいろんな（しかもたくさんの）落し穴があるのだ。

Given the above results, you may be thinking “Geez, I should go build one myself!” Before making such a decision, however, you need to consider the pitfalls of building your own Mac—and there are many.

奇妙な振る舞い

マシンが動くようになっても、奇妙なハードウェアの振る舞いを経験したりする。例えば Frankenmac の場合、ちゃんとシャットダウンしないのだ。OS X 自体は終了してスクリーンが暗くはなるのだが、ファンやハードドライブは動いたままだ。完全にマシンを終了するには、手動でパワーボタンを押す必要がある。

Even if your machine is running fine, you may experience odd hardware issues—the Frankenmac, for instance, doesn’t fully shut down properly. OS X itself shuts down, and the screen goes blank, but the fans and hard drive continue to run, so I have to manually press the power button to truly turn the machine off.

アップデートや EULA の問題

また、将来システムアップデートによってはインストールした OS X に問題が生ずる可能性も大きい。今後の Software Update はむやみに受け入られなくなる。最後にもっと重要なことは、自作マシンで Mac OS X を動かすとアップルの EULA［End User License Agreement：使用許諾契約書］違反となり、やり方によっては著作権法違反にもなるかもしれないということだ。

There’s also a good chance that future system updates may cause problems with my Mac OS X installationﾑI can’t just blindly accept every Software Update that comes down the pipeline. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, to make your machine run Mac OS X, you have to violate the OS X end-user license agreementﾑand perhaps copyright law, depending on how you get things done.

Having visited the build-your-own side of the Mac world, I’ve decided I’m more than happy letting Cupertino build my Macs for me—Apple has shown it’s much better at it than I am. And who knows? Maybe one day that mid-range Mac minitower of my dreams will no longer be mythical.

さすがに OS X インストールの詳細には触れていないが、マック誌の性格からして当然だろう。

しかし、インターネットを渉猟して得られる情報と市販の PC パーツを買い揃えれば、然るべき知識と技術があるひとなら誰でも「Mac OS X の走るマシン＝自家製マック」を作ることが可能だと示した点で画期的だと思う。
