Mac mini はどうなる？

マックミニの生産が終了し、代わりにナノが現れるというウワサがあったが、どうもはっきりしないようだ。

Ars Technica が Mac mini のウワサをまとめている。

2007 年５月、AppleInsider はアップル噂系のトップランナーとしての名声（とくに危機に瀕しているとも思えないが）を恐れ気もなく賭けて、Mac min について大胆な予想をしたものだ。

In May 2007, AppleInsider fearlessly put its reputation as the leading purveyors of Apple rumors that don’t appear to be just made up on the line, making a bold prediction about the Mac mini.

これは８月７日のイベントだった。リフレッシュといっても CPU を新しくしただけで、ワイヤレスカードは 802.11b/g から 802.11b/g/n になることもなくそのままだった。それでも廃止にならなかったことだけは確かだ。しかし話はそこまでだった。然るに今度は、Mac mini が「間違いなく近々」（Real Soon Now™）廃止になると AppleInsider ははっきり予想している。

That was from the Apple Event on August 7, and while the update was no more than a drop-in CPU—not even updating the wireless card from 802.11b/g to 802.11b/g/n—it was definitely not a cancellation. But that was then and this is now, and now AppleInsider is definitely predicting The End-of-Life of the Mac mini Real Soon Now™.

残念ながら AppleInsider には、アップルが Mac mini の代わりに何かほかのものを出そうとしているのかどうかについては、内部情報の持ち合わせはないようだ。私の考えでは、失敗製品の Apple TV を Mac mini の代わりにプッシュするのではないかと思う。これまで Mac mini が持っていた特色、すなわち単体として完璧なコンピュータであるという特色をまったく無視して・・・。しかしまた、Mac OS Rumors のもうひとつの妄想についても触れないわけにはいかない。もっともタイプしながら我ながら情けなくなるけれど・・・

Unfortunately, AppleInsider does not have any insider information on whether Apple intends to replace the Mac mini with something else. I personally believe Apple will try to push the failed product that is the Apple TV as an alternative to the Mac mini, completely disregarding the demographic of the Mac mini—that being people who want a real computer. However, I am compelled to offer up the alternative fantasy from MacOSRumors—I feel dirty just typing it.

Well, you know what they say: a stopped clock is right at least twice a day… unless it’s a digital clock. Then it would just be blank, or maybe show 88:88. So if that’s what time it is, expect a “Mac nano” Real Soon Now™.

［噂］マックミニはナノになる

Leopard 登場が近づくにつれて、噂マシンのエンジンもかかり始めた。

TUAW まで、超小型のヘッドレスマックのウワサを取り上げている。

今年初め、マックミニが製造中止の憂き目に遭いかけたときから、この考えに取り憑かれている。Leopard が出たら Mac mini を買ってそれに搭載するぞ、と。誰がなんといおうとそうするつもりだ。Jobs がいうのなら別だが・・・。Mac OS Rumors によると、１０月の終わりでミニは終了するそうだ。そして新しく Mac Nano が登場する。 Mac Nano バンザイだ。どうやらこの新しいローエンドマックはミニよりさらに小さく（ハードドライブに入るぐらいの高さ）、筐体のデザインはまったく新しいものになるという。

I’ve had this plan ever since the mini almost died earlier this year, and I’m sticking to it: as soon as I can buy a Mac mini with Leopard on it, I’ll do so. And no one’s going to stop me– except maybe Jobs himself. Mac OS Rumors reports that they’ve heard that as of October’s end, the mini is dead– long live something new called the Mac Nano. Supposedly, the new low-end Mac will be even smaller than a mini (just tall enough to fit a hard drive in), and the enclosure will have a completely new design.

実に心躍るではないか。ナノという名前はあちこちで浮上して、新しいものではないにしても・・・。噂系ではほかにも４つの製品の名前があがっている。AppleTV もハードドライブを含めてアップデートされるそうだし、長い間噂のウルトラポータブル MacBook Nano（噂の３番目）も出るかもしれないという。

Intriguing idea indeed, even if it isn’t quite new– the Nano name has been floating around for a while. There are four other products sliding out of the rumor mill as well– AppleTV is rumored to get an update (and a hard drive), and supposedly we’ll see a MacBook Nano as well, the long-rumored ultraportable that Apple is supposedly working on– a.k.a. Rumor #3.

未来のマックか、それとも願望にすぎないのか。現時点ではそれ以上詳しい話はない。しかし Mac OS Rumors（9-to-5 Mac とは違う。分かるだろう？）が「ウワサ」というからにはそれなりの根拠があるのだろう。いずれにせよ、私はこの秋に、Leopard を搭載した超小型で、コンパクトで、ヘッドレスのマックが買いたいのだ。名前はミニだろうとナノだろうとどっちでもいいんだ。

The future of Mac, or wishful thinking? At this point, we have no indication– Mac OS Rumors is no 9-to-5 Mac (ouch, but they deserve it, don’t they?), but they are called “Rumors” for a reason. Either way, I want to buy an extremely small, compact, headless Mac with Leopard on it this fall. Whether it’s called mini or Nano doesn’t matter to me at all.

９月５日の iPod イベントについて、MacDailyNews が興味深いウワサを紹介している。

アップルのデジタルコンテンツに詳しいあるソース（単数）から、つぎのような情報が MacDailyNews にはいった。来週の水曜日、アップルは「ワイヤレス機能を持った iPod」に加えて、「iTunes Store でのワイヤレス販売」を発表するだろう、と。これによってユーザーは「iPod や iPhone から直接」［iTunes Store の］コンテンツを購入できるようになる。

Apple will debut “wireless-capable iPods” next Wednesday along with “wireless iTunes Store sales,” enabling users to buy content “directly from iPod, iPhone,” a single source often familiar with Apple’s digital content plans tells MacDailyNews.

そのソースの話では、「新しい iPod は間違いなく Mac OS X ベースだ。iPod の新しい機能には肝をつぶすことになるぞ。」

iPod の方のワイヤレス機能ではなく、iTunes Store のワイヤレス販売についての話は初めてのような気がする。

さっそく Engadget もこの話を見逃さずに取り上げている。

もうひとつ興味深いのは、Carl Howe の指摘だ。HD コンテンツの映画レンタルも来週併せて発表になるのではないかと予想しているのだ。

９月５日が近づくにつれていろんな話が出てきそうだ。

結果的に Steve Jobs のマスコミ操縦術に操られているのかもしれないが、それにしてもアップルがらみの話はやっぱりおもしろい。

ウワサの iPod 発表は９月５日だそうだ

いよいよ iPod 発表の期日まではっきりしてきた。

最近のウワサや推測のとおり、iPod のニューモデルは９月に発表されるという。ただし、９月中〜下旬発表という昨日の AppleInsider の話とは違って、我々がアップル社内に持つ複数のソースによれば、アップルは９月第１週、それも９月５日に特別発表という爆弾を仕掛けているようだ。

Apple’s new line of iPods will indeed be introduced in September, in line with recent speculation and rumors. But contrary to the report provided by AppleInsider yesterday, the announcement will not be happening mid-to-late September. The company plans to drop the bomb on us with a major unveiling during the first week of September—specifically, September 5, according to our sources within the company.

通常イベントは水曜日ではなく火曜日に行なわれるから、５日の水曜日というのはいささか奇妙な日付だ。これはホリディウィークエンドが長期にわたるのでそうなったということらしい。Steve 猊下、なんでもあなたのおっしゃるとおりにいたします。あるいは、発表は９月５日だが、出荷は９月末になる可能性もある。そうなら AppleInsider のソースがいった日付も当たっているのかもしれない。

The fifth is odd day for an event (a Wednesday instead of the typical Tuesday), but we are told that the reason for this is the long holiday weekend. Whatever you say, your Steveness. It’s also possible that Apple will make announcements on the 5th while shipping later in the month, which would validate the date range provided by AI’s sources.

何が発表されるかという点に関しては、我々のソース（複数）もほとんど分っていない。ただ、９月５日発表のひとつは間違いなく新しい iPod だという。AppleInsider の記事については、詳細は分からないものの、彼らの知る限り「当たっていそうだ」と我々のソースはいっている。ということで、AppleInsider が触れた点について見てみよう。

Our sources are slim on details for exactly what will be announced, but said that at least one of the things that will come out of September 5th will be a new iPod. When given a rundown of the AppleInsider report, they said that they weren’t clear on the minute details, but from what they do know, “it seems right.” So that said, let’s take a look at what AI wrote.

Four different models will be introduced next month, says AI, most of which will be NAND-flash-based and major evolutions of both the iPod video and iPod nano lines. Sources in the “far East” have allegedly seen fullscreen iPods that will have an OS that is based off of OS X. “What’s interesting, however, is that the Apple has also been working on Mac OS-based iPod software for models that will retain their click-wheels—such as third-generation iPod nanos,” writes Kasper Jade. “Interface concept videos recently published and then pulled from MacRumors consisted of genuine Apple material to this effect, AppleInsider can confirm.”

ということは、準備中のフルスクリーン video iPod とこれまでの「レギュラー」video iPod が、両方とも OS X をベースとしながら、異なる用途のために異なるデザインを持っているということなのかもしれない。全部が一度に発表されなくても、こうなるだろうということは、これまでのアナリストやマックコミュニティの一般的な期待と合致するものだ。

Perhaps this means that both a fullscreen video iPod is in the works and a more “regular” video iPod, both based on OS X but with different designs for different purposes. Even if they aren’t rolled out at once, this would fall in line with general expectations of the analyst and Mac communities.

“iPhone nano”

The products are up in the air, although AI believes that one of them could possibly be the rumored “iPhone nano.” We cautiously agree that this is a remote possibility, partly because of the reasons provided in the previously-linked post and also because we think that an iPhone nano would surely take this event up a notch from “expected” to “Wow!” And according to our sources, this is a “Wow”-level event. Maybe they’re just too hopped up on the Apple Kool-Aid, though. You never know, with these things.

２年前もそうだった

私自身がこのイベントについておもしろいと感じたのは、まだ発表が正式に決まる前だったけれど、大変メジャーな製品発表だと聞いたことだ。それはまったく予期せぬものだった。iPod nano は２年前の９月の第１週（正確には９月７日）に発表されたのを思い出す。その後 iPod の品揃えの中で急速にナンバーワンの売れ筋となった。アップルとしてはまた同じことを狙っているのかもしれない。

What I find to be interesting is that this event, before the date was officially decided, was described to me as very major product launch, something completely unexpected. I was reminded that the iPod nano was introduced during the first week of September two years ago (September 7, to be specific), which quickly catapulted to the number one seller among Apple’s iPod portfolio. Apple probably hopes to do something like that again.

それまでは・・・息をこらして待つこととしよう。

iPod はどうした？

iMac のウワサ（８月７日）は本物だったが、第６世代 iPod のウワサ（８月上旬）はそれっきり音沙汰無しだ。

Engadget がおもしろい予想をしている。「我々の考えでは今 iPod を買うべきではないと思う。」

digg の投票の数（2449 票）をみても、みんな興味津々のようだ。

値段は下がり、在庫も減る

読者やインサイダーから次の iPod についていやというほどＥメールをもらった。アップルが iPhone を出してから２か月、新 iMac も公表されて調子がいい。それに iPod の値段は下がってきている。値段を下げろなんていえるのはアップル本部だけだ。販売店の情報によると、アップルの iPod 出荷日はどんどん延びているという。ということは、現行モデルの在庫が少なくなり、新製品のスペースが増えているということだ。

We’ve gotten a deluge of emails over the last week from readers and insiders speculating about the next iPod release; after all, it’s been a couple months since Apple loosed the iPhone, the new iMac is official and living large, and current iPods have seen a price drop — something that only comes strictly mandated by Apple HQ. What’s more, sources at retailers are continuing to tell us that Apple is slowing down iPod shipments, strongly suggesting the company is running out its current stock to make room on shelves for new product.

いつもなら９月〜１０月だ

次に出るクパチーノの新製品が何かということをはっきりさせられる訳ではないが（OS X ベースで、フラッシュメモリーの容量も大きいことは知っている）、それが何であれ９月あるいは１０月に発表されるということだけは賭けてもいい。2003 年以降アップルは毎年何か新しい iPod を出している。それに、 iPhone を iPod とは異なる第３カテゴリーの事業と考えているので、iPhone の発表で 2007 年の iPod 発表が終わったと考える訳はない。また、iPod についてアップルは年がら口をつぐんでいる。しかしそういったことだけが理由ではないのだ。そうではなくて、2004 年以来統計的に見ると、アップルはこの２か月の間に次のメインとなる iPod を発表してきたという事実があるからだ。（この２か月が年末商戦の直近でもなければ、離れ過ぎてもいないためかもしれないけれど・・・）

We can’t speak to what specific technology Cupertino’s got brewing behind the scenes (we know it’s OS X-based, and hear it’ll use more flash), but whatever it is, we’d wager it’ll be released in September or October. And not just because Apple’s has taken to launching at least some new iPods every year since 2003, or admitted that it considers its iPhone business its “third”, separate from its dedicated music player business (and thus wouldn’t consider the iPhone its big iPod launch for 2007), or has just generally been mum about the iPod all year. It’s more to do with the fact that since 2004 the company has statistically fallen into the groove of using those two months to launch new flagship iPods (probably thanks to their close-but-not-too-close proximity to the holidays).

明らかな結論だ

この件に関しアップル内部に通報者がいるかって？　いや、そんなものはまったくいない。販売店の情報と、どんどん増えてくる証拠から明白な結論を導き出しただけのことだ。そうだ。新しい iPod は今年出ると思う。そうでない訳はないだろう。もし我々がギャンブラーなら９月〜１０月に賭ける。もちろんこれを読んだ Steve が我々を混乱させるため１１月〜１２月に出す可能性だってある。しかしだ、考えてみてくれ。恒例のクリスマスシーズンより前にミュージックプレーヤを入手できたら、みんなハッピーなんじゃないか。

Do we have inside dope from Apple on this one? No, none at all. Just a lot of retail reports and mounting evidence that suggests a pretty obvious conclusion. Yeah, we expect new iPods this year (seriously, why wouldn’t there be?), and if we were gamblin’ men we’d put our money on the September – October. Of course, we know Steve will totally read this and launch in November or December just to mess with us, but hey, as long as the masses get their music players before our annual present-opening ceremonies, everybody’s happy.

タイトル「いまiPodを買おうと考えている皆様へ」からして、核心を衝いていてスゴい。

Ittousai 氏の登場で Engadget Japanese が抜群におもしろくなったことは衆人の認めるところだ。

８月７日までいよいよカウントダウンが始まった。

話を盛り上げるには、なんといってもウワサが必要だ。

Just two days before Apple’s special media event, Gizmodo purports to have new information from a tipster about what we can expect to come out of it. And if true, there is going to be a metric buttload of hardware to blow your credit cards on this week.

iMac 以外にも・・・

一番期待されているのは当然新しい iMac だが、それについては繰り返さない。情報屋の話では、新しい MacBook もあるそうだ。ウワサと違ってデザイン変更はないけれど。がっかりしないでくれ、Santa Rosa チップはちゃんと搭載されるから。

Naturally, the most expected announcement will be the rumored new iMacs, so we won’t delve into those details once again. However, the tipster also claims that there will be new MacBooks. But contrary to rumors, there will be no cosmetic change—worry not, though, because they will apparently be getting Santa Rosa chips.

Mac mini の大変身

なんと驚いたことに、Gizmodo のソースによれば、Mac mini が完全な大変身を遂げるという。死神が訪れたりはしない。ブラッシュアルミニューム製に変身して、１５％小さくなるそうだ。ベースモデルは 120GB のハードドライブが付いてくる。Mac mini が高速のプロセッサを搭載するかどうかについては何も話はないが、これまで一年以上 Core Duo に甘んじてきたことを考えると、最低でも Core 2 Duo にスピードアップすると考えなければおかしいだろう。我々自身の Jon Stokes の話でも、「インテルは Core 2 Duo をタダで配っているも同然」なのだから。

Most surprisingly is that the Mac mini will allegedly get a total makeover—not a visit from the grim reaper. It will get a “total form change” with brushed aluminum and 15 percent smaller, according to Gizmodo’s source. The base model will also have a 120GB hard drive. No word on whether this new and improved Mac mini will get bumped processors, but considering that it’s been rocking the Core Duo for well over a year now, it would be downright stupid if it didn’t at the very least get a bump to Core 2 Duo, if not more than that. According to our own Jon Stokes, “Intel’s practically giving away Core 2 Duos!”

［スチームパンクな iMac ？］

Think Secret が予測していた「８月７日」はどうやら本物らしい。

Steve Jobs がやるかどうかは不明だが、アップル本部でマックに関するプレス説明会があることは確定したようだ。

いつもならアップルのウワサ話になんか組しない Macworld 誌の Philip Michaels が、たまりかねてこんな記事を書いている。「やっとアップルはマックに注意を向けた！」

今回は招待状なし

慈悲深きアップルは、８月の酷暑を凌ぐものを我々に与えてくれた。iPhone の後に続く、そして Leopard 発表以前のこの時期に、アップルが隠し持っているものはなにかと推測する機会をだ。火曜日遅く、アップルはイベントを・・・じゃなかったプレス説明会を、クパチーノの本部で開くと発表したのだ。

Ever-thoughtful Apple has given us something to stave off the dog days of August a little while longer—a chance to speculate on what the company has up its sleeve in this post-iPhone, pre-Leopard period. Late Tuesday, the company announced that it would hold… well, not an event, really, but more of a press briefing at its Cupertino headquarters.

このテのアップル公認のプレス会合には、その内容を窺わせるデザインの招待状が発出されるのが普通だ。１月の Macworld Expo キーノートの場合は、「最初の３０年は始まりに過ぎない・・・」という謎めいたメッセージを含んでいたし、 iTunes Store で映画をダウンロードできるようになったときのイベントでは、映画風のスポットライトをあしらったアップルロゴで「さあショーの始まりだ・・・」という文句が付いていた。しかし今回は、そんな気の利いた画像もなく、骨占いで占い師が未来を占うこともできない。その代わり、来週の火曜日に開くプレスイベントは「マックに焦点を合わせたものだ」とはっきりいったのだ。それが何を意味するのか、きっとどっと予想で溢れかえるに違いない。

Usually, these sorts of Apple-sanctioned press gatherings are heralded by an invitation containing some sort of tell-tale artwork—think the then-cryptic “The first 30 years were just the beginning” message before last January’s Macworld Expo keynote or the “It’s Showtime” invitation depicting the Apple logo bathed in movie-style spotlights to mark the event where Apple added movie purchases to the iTunes Store. This time, however, there’s no clever graphic for us to pore over like soothsayers studying chicken bones for clues about the future. Instead, Apple has come right out and said it—next Tuesday’s press event will be “Mac-focused,” which will doubtlessly trigger a flood of speculation over just what that means.

予測に必要なもの

アップルが新製品を出すときには、ちゃんとした予測（educated guess）をするために二つのことを調べることにしている。ひとつは  Macworld 誌の Hardware Guide であり、もうひとつはアップルの直近の四半期業務報告書、特に製品別の売り上げ実績だ。前者は前回の製品のモデルチェンジからどのくらい時間が経ったか教えてくれるし、後者は販売傾向を示してくれる。

Whenever it’s time to make an educated guess on what new products Apple might have in store, I consult two things—Macworld’s Apple Hardware Guide and Apple’s most recent quarterly report, specifically the breakdown of sales by product type. The former tells me how long it’s been since a product’s undergone an update while the latter shows me what the sales trends are.

例えば Hardware Guide をざっと見るだけで、MacBook や MacBook Pro が過去数か月の間にアップグレードされた一方で、デスクトップ全製品については一年以上もモデルチェンジがなかったことが分かる。（８コアの Mac Pro は例外だ。そもそも一般向けの機種ではない。）またアップルの販売実績を見れば、記録的なマックの売り上げはラップトップによるものであることが分かる。デスクトップも第３四半期対前年比で２０％増というかなりの増加だが、ラップトップの 113 万台に比べると 63 万 4000 台そこそこに過ぎない。明らかにデスクトップには成長の余地があるのだ。

For instance, glancing at the Hardware Guide, I notice that while both the MacBook and MacBook Pro have seen upgrades in the last several months, the entire desktop line has gone nearly a year without a new model (excluding the April unveiling of the eight-core Mac Pro, which really wasn’t aimed at a wide-scale audience). Looking at the sales figures from the Apple data sheet, we can see that laptops are what’s driving Apple’s record Mac sales. Desktop sales by unit rose a respectable 20 percent in the third quarter year-over-year, but the company sold only 634,000 desktops compared to 1.13 million laptops. Clearly, there’s room for growth in the desktop numbers.

どのデスクトップマシン？

ではどのデスクトップマシンなのか。iMac のプロセッサはラップトップのマシンと同じ Core 2 Duo だ。iMac が Core 2 Duo にアップグレードしたのは昨年の秋で、MacBook Pro ラインよりひと月も前だった。インテルがモバイルプロセッサをアップグレードしたのが５月で、改良された Santa Rosa チップセットが最新の MacBook Pro に取り入れられていることを考えれば、iMacs の新しいモデルを準備中と考えるのが理にかなっているだろう。

Which desktop becomes even more apparent when you consider that the iMac uses the same Core 2 Duo chip that powers the laptop line—in fact, last fall, the iMac underwent the Core 2 Duo upgrade more than a month before the MacBook Pro line. With Intel having released its updated mobile processors in May—and with many of the improvements from that Santa Rosa chipset finding their way into the most recent MacBook Pro upgrades—it seems logical that a new line of iMacs is in the works.

ああ、しかし・・・

ああ、しかし・・・、私の慎重な推理もここまでだ。アップグレードされたチップを入れ替えるというだけなら、アップルが大騒ぎしたりするだろうか。実際６月初旬にアップルが MacBook Pro を発表したときには、大げさにすることなく静かに発表したのだ。もしアップルが、来週火曜日にプレスを本部へ招集するということなら、新しい、改良されたプロセッサを同じ筐体に入れ換えるなんてことよりもうちょっと重要なことがあるに違いない。

Ah, but here’s where my careful reasoning falls apart: If it were merely a matter of swapping in an upgraded chip, Apple would do so without much hoopla. After all, that’s exactly what the company did in early June with the aforementioned MacBook Pro release. If Apple is summoning reporters to its headquarters next Tuesday, it’s likely to be something slightly more important than new-and-improved processors in the same old case.

もうちょっと重要なことって何だろうか。私にはまったく分からない。もしかしたらオールインワンデスクトップを入れる新しいケースかもしれない。もしかしたら極秘のテクノロジーかもしれない。それともまったく別のものかもしれない。

Now as to what that slightly more important thing is? I have no idea. Perhaps it’s a new enclosure for the all-in-one desktop. Perhaps there’s some other hush-hush technology to be introduced. Or maybe it’s something else entirely.

iPhone のウワサにピリピリ

アップルの株価は、７月３１日の一日で１０ドル近く下落した。根も葉もないウワサによるものだった。

Apple shares dropped roughly 6 points in the space of 90 minutes at the start of trading today on the strength of a unsubstantiated report of a cut in iPhone production. Some Apple watchers are characterizing the action as a deliberately staged raid on the high-flying stock.

アップル株は、9.67 ドル安（6.84% 安）の 131.76 ドルで引け、時価総額にして８４億ドルを一日にして失った。

The company closed at 131.76, down 9.67 (6.84%), having shaved $8.4 billion off its market cap in one day.

The report that drove the stock south was mostly spread by word of mouth, but one version appeared shortly after 11 a.m. ET in a Scott Moritz piece in The Street:

「アップルの株価を下落に追い込んだのは、アップルが iPhone の生産を『900 万台から 450 万台に』削減しようとしているという Miller Tabak & Co. のメモだった。」

The chatter that sent the stock down was that Apple was reducing its production of iPhones from “9 million units to 4.5 million units,” according to a note from Miller Tabak & Co.

「そのメモは、Goldman Sachs のトレーダーたちの話を引用したもので、その他にも iPod が削減されるという予想も含んでいた。」

The note cites talk among traders at Goldman Sachs and also includes speculation that the cuts may be coming in iPod production. (link)

第６世代 iPod は８月前半登場という噂

新 iMac に引き続き、またまた Think Secret 発の噂だ。第６世代 iPod が８月前半に登場だという。

第６世代は８月前半

アップルのフルサイズ iPod のアップデートが登場間近だという。情報筋（複数）によれば、早ければ８月前半にも出るそうだ。ただし、新しい iPod にはタッチスクリーンもなければ、iPhone のような簡易版 Mac OS X も搭載しないという。それらのアップデートは 2008 年までは行なわれない。

Apple’s full-size iPod is being primed for an update that could arrive as early as the first-half of August, sources report. The revision will feature neither a touch-screen nor will run a scaled down version of Mac OS X like the iPhone, however—those updates are not scheduled until 2008.

アップルのエンジニアは、iPod の高さを詰めて短くしたらしい。ただし、現行第 5.5 世代 iPod と同じクリックホィールを備え、320×240 の同じ解像度を維持しているという。現在のものから約１インチ短くなり、BlackBerry に似た縦横比になるともいう。

Apple engineers are said to have shaved the height of the iPod while maintaining the same 320×240 resolution display and click-wheel as the current 5.5G iPod. The saved space will shrink about an inch off the device and give it proportions that in some ways more resemble a BlackBerry.

新しい iPod OS を採用

新しい iPod は第６世代モデル（6G model）と呼ばれることになると思われるが、それはまた新しい iPod OS を採用する最初の機種になるだろう。情報筋（複数）によれば、最近出回った新しい OS のリークビデオは本物で、iPhone からいくつかのデザインを借用しているという。

The new iPod, which Apple will most likely refer to as the 6G model, will also be the first to sport a refreshed iPod OS. Sources have confirmed that the recent leak of a video featuring shots of the new operating system are legitimate and say the interface borrows several design cues from the iPhone.

iPod OS 改良版の話が最初に浮上したのは約２年前だ。当時情報筋（複数）は、アップルの首脳陣が第５世代 iPod 用として新しいインターフェイスを強力に推進したが、第５世代 iPod には間に合わなかったと Think Secret に語ったものだ。

Word of an improved iPod OS first surfaced nearly two years ago; sources at that time shared in confidence with Think Secret that Apple’s executive team was strongly pushing for a new interface for the 5G iPod, but that the improvements could not be delivered in time for that iPod’s roll-out.

カラー版も出るか

また情報筋（複数）によれば、黒の新しい iPod はこれまでのような艶やかな光沢仕上げではなく、黒の MacBook とマッチするような仕上げだという。同じ情報筋は、黒や白以外のカラーのプロトタイプも目撃している。アップルは遂に、iPod mini、nano、shuffle でやったように、フルサイズ iPod のカラー版を出すことになるのかもしれない。ただ、カラー版を出す決定がなされたかどうかは不明。

Sources also report the new black iPod will be less glossy than previous models and feature a finish that better matches the black MacBook. Those same sources have also seen prototypes in colors other than black and white, suggesting Apple may finally expand its full-size iPod line to other colors, as it has done with the iPod mini, nano, and shuffle previously. It is unclear whether the decision to offer other colors has been finalized, however.
