アンロックされた iPhone は警告どおり使えなくなった

注目のソフトウェアアップデートが発表され、警告通りのことが起きた。

警告なんて受けなかったとはいわないでくれ。ロック解除した iPhone は将来のソフトウェアアップデートで使えなくなることがありうると、今週始めアップルはユーザーに警告した後、木曜日にそのことばどおりにアップデートを実行した。

Don’t say you weren’t warned. After cautioning customers earlier this week that unlocked iPhones may be disabled when installing future Apple software updates, the company on Thursday made good on its warning.

Macworld 誌のオフィスには SIM ハックを行った２台の iPhone があるが、iPhone Update 1.1.1 をインストールしたところ両方とも使用不可になってしまった。アップデート自体はスムーズだった。しかし再起動したあとアクティベートしようとしたところ、次のようなメッセージが現れた。「iPhone をアクティベートするために、アンロックされていない有効な SIM を挿入してください。」

Two iPhones in the Macworld offices that had the SIM hacks applied to them were disabled after installing iPhone Update 1.1.1. The update process went through without a hitch, however, when the phone restarted an activation message appeared that said, “Insert an unlocked and valid SIM to activate iPhone.”

iTunes でも同様のメッセージが現れた。SIM カードが正しくないので、有効な SIM カードを入れてくださいというメッセージだ。

A similar message appeared in iTunes. A note saying the SIM card was not valid and to insert a valid SIM card greeted the user.

iPhone のメニューを試すこともできなかった。アップデートした後唯一使えるのは「緊急用スライダー」だけだ。これでは非常電話しかかけられない。

You could not navigate through the iPhone’s menus, either. The “Slide for Emergency” slider is the only thing available after installing the update. This allows customers to make emergency calls only.

残念ながら現時点では、AppTapp のようなサードパーティのアプリケーションにも影響が出たかどうかは分からない。iPhone のメニューまで進めないため、アプリケーション自体がインストールされたままかどうかも分からないからだ。

Unfortunately, we can’t say at this point if the update affected third-party applications like AppTapp. Since the iPhone would not let us into the phone’s menu system, it was not possible to see if the applications were still installed.

アップルがユーザーにロック解除された iPhone は使用不可能になるかもしれないと警告したのは月曜日のことだった。警告の中でアップルはつぎのように述べた。「インターネットで入手できる未許可のロック解除プログラムは、iPhone のソフトに回復不能のダメージを与えることが判明した。この結果、改造された iPhone は、アップルによる将来のソフトウェアアップデートを実行すると永久に操作が出来なくなる可能性が高い。」

Apple warned customers on Monday that unlocked iPhones may become inoperable. “Apple has discovered that many of the unauthorized iPhone unlocking programs available on the Internet cause irreparable damage to the iPhone’s software, which will likely result in the modified iPhone becoming permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iPhone software update is installed,” the company said in a statement.

iPhone をアンロックしたり、改造した顧客は保証の対象とならないという注意書きがそこら中のアップルストアに張り出されている。しかしそれと同時に、アップルジーニアスたちが国中で、レンガと化した iPhone を密かに受け取り、店の奥に持って行って、ちゃんと動くようにして返却しているという話も伝わってきている。

Apple continues posting warning signs around their stores, cautioning customers that unlocked and modded iPhones fall outside their warranty. And at the same time, Apple Geniuses around the country quietly are reportedly accepting bricked iphones, slipping into the back and returning with functioning units.

彼らがローレベルのリフレッシュを行っているのか、それとも新しいものと取り替えているだけなのかは定かでない。しかし iBrick［レンガ化した iPhone］を持ち込んで、帰るときは iPhone を受け取った少なくとも４人の顧客の話を聞いている。ただし、これらの顧客が iPhone をロック解除したかどうかは明らかでない。また、一切 iPhone ロック解除や改造をしていないのに iBrick になってしまったひとの話も聞いている。

We’re not sure whether they’re doing a low-level reflash or just swapping units out. We have reports of at least four customers who walked in with iBricks and walked out with iPhones. It is unclear at this time whether these customers unlocked their iPhones or not–we’re also receiving reports of iBricks from people who never unlocked or modded their units.
