ロックフリー iPhone は出るか

延び延びになっていたフランスでの提携先がはっきりして、やっとアップルのニュースリリースが出た。

純正のロックフリー iPhone

フランスでは Orange が iPhone の独占キャリアになるという話は本当だった。しかし今回の提携話で一番興味深いのは、純正のロックフリー iPhone（officially unlocked handset）を初めて入手できるようにになるという点だ。

Orange will indeed offer Apple’s iPhone on France, but the most interesting aspect of the two firms’ partnership will be the availability, for the first time, of officially unlocked handsets.

ロックしたものも、ロックフリーも

フランスの法律では、キャリアが特定の携帯端末を自社のネットワークに囲い込むことを禁じている。消費者は、自分の端末をいつでも異なるプロバイダのネットワークに移行出来なければならない。要すれば、Orange はロックした iPhone を 399 ユーロ［560 ドル］で販売するのと合わせて、ロックしていないモデルも今後両者が決める価格で販売することになるということだ。

French law prevents carriers from tying handsets exclusively to their networks – consumers have to be able to move to a different network provider and take their phones with them. The upshot is that Orange will sell a locked iPhone for €399 alongside an unlocked model for a price that’s yet to be specified by either party.

６か月以内にロックフリーを

フランスにおける独占キャリアは Orange になるとアップルが公式発表したとき、みんなは怪訝（けげん）に思ったものだ。フランスの法律では、６か月以内にロックされていないバージョンも入手できるようにしなければならないからだ。１１月２９日に iPhone のフランス発売を開始するというプレスリリースでは、アップルはこんな些細な点については触れずに済ませた。でもみんなが忘れてしまったわけじゃないのだ。

When Apple made its official announcement that Orange would be the exclusive carrier of the iPhone in France, many wondered what would become of the French law that required unlocked versions to be made available within six months. Apple conveniently left that tiny detail out of its announcement that the iPhone would go on sale in the country as of November 29, but nobody had forgotten.

Orange の広報担当がしゃべった

ついに、ロックされたものだけでなくロックフリーの iPhone も本当に Orange が発売することが明らかになった。Orange の広報担当 Béatrice Mandrine が International Herald Tribune に語っている。ロックされた iPhone の価格は 399 ユーロ、ロックフリーの iPhone はもっと高くなる、と。どのくらい高くなるかという詳しい話は避けて、１１月になれば詳細が分かると述べるにとどまった。

Now, it turns out that Orange will indeed sell unlocked iPhones alongside locked versions. Orange spokesperson Béatrice Mandrine told the International Herald Tribune that while the locked iPhones would go for €399, unlocked phones would cost a premium. She didn’t elaborate on how much that would be, but said that more details would be available in November.

出るのはいつか

１１月になれば、399 ユーロ iPhone の購入者がキャリアと結ぶ契約期間もはっきりする。確かに高くつくだろうが、アメリカのケースと似たようなものだろう。販売奨励金付きの端末を買ってキャリアと［高い］契約を結ぶか、それとも契約なしで他の第三者が製造したロックフリーの［高い］電話を買うかのどちらかだ。Mandrine は、ロックフリー iPhone がすぐに入手できるかどうか詳しくは触れなかったが、そうではないと考える方が多分常識的だろう。入手できるのは、2008 年の５月ないしは６月ではないだろうか。その頃には、次のバージョンのロックされた iPhone が出ていて、また半年が経つというわけ・・・。どういうことになるか我々もよくフォローしたい。

Also available in November will be details regarding the length of the contract required for the €399 version of the iPhone. While pricey, this mirrors the structure that most of us are used to in the US: a subsidized handset with a contract requirement, or an unlocked phone (usually from a third party) with no contract. Mandrine didn’t elaborate as to whether the unlocked version would be available immediately, but it’s reasonable to assume that it won’t be. Instead, it’ll probably be available in May or June of 2008, at which time a new iPhone version may already be out and locked… for another 6 months. We’ll keep our eyes and ears open to see what will happen.

例によって食い違い

続報：ロックフリー iPhone については、例によってアップルと Orange はそれぞれ食い違っている。（当然予想されたことだが・・・。）アップルが Gizmodo に語った話では、上記のコメントは単にフランスの法律を引用したに過ぎず、Orange の公式見解ではないといっている。Orange の広報担当は確かに International Herald Tribune にそう語ったのに・・・。でも、そんなことは些細なこと、些細なこと・・・。

Update: Once again, Apple and Orange appear to be at odds (this is becoming a very predictable pattern) over the unlocked iPhones. Apple has told Gizmodo that the above comments were merely citing French law, and not Orange’s official intentions. Of course, an Orange spokesperson specifically told IHT that the company did intend to do so, but hey. Details, details.

携帯電話の SIM ロック解除なんてまともな人間（？）のやることではないのかと思っていたら・・・

携帯端末とキャリアを抱き合わせにして、自社のネットワークに囲い込むことを禁じる国もあったんだ！！

そんな法律のない国では、SIM ロック解除は許されないのだろうか？
