先日インテルの x86 チップが話題に上ったが、今度は Broadcom のチップだ。多機能がシングルチップに集積統合されているという。
3G iPhone の登場が一歩近づいたと注目するひとが多い。

“3G phone on a chip”
セミコンダクタメーカーの Broadcom は、3G 電話（3G phone）向けのシングルチップを製造する初めてのチップメーカーとなった。Broadcom の「シングルチップ上の 3G 電話」（3G phone on a chip）は「BCM21551」と名付けられ、3G 携帯電話に必要とされるすべての技術を 65 ナノメーターのシングルダイの上に集積している。しかも、今日から入手が可能なのだ。
Semiconductor firm Broadcom has become the first chipmaker to announce a single-chip 3G phone solution. Dubbed the BCM21551, Broadcom’s “3G phone on a chip” moves all of the tech needed for a 3G mobile phone to a single 65nm die, and it’s available today.

あれもできる、これもできる
BCM21551 のシングルチップ上には、3G ベースバンドのトランシーバ、Bluetooth 2.1、マルチバンドの RF トランシーバがひとつにまとめられている。このチップは、30fps［毎秒 30 フレーム］ビデオ、５メガピクセルカメラ、高度のマルチメディア処理をサポートする。また、FM ラジオトランスミッタやレシーバをカーラジオを通じて再生することまで出来る。
The BCM21551 combines a 3G baseband transceiver, Bluetooth 2.1, and a multiband RF transceiver on a single chip. The chip also includes support for 30fps video, a 5 megapixel cameras, and advanced multimedia processing. The chip even includes an FM radio transmitter and receiver for playback through a car stereo.

WiFi や GPS はムリだがレガシーは可能
じゃあ、欠けているものは何か？ WiFi や GPS のサポート以外にはあまりない。この二つには別のチップが必要だ。また BCM21551 は、EV-DO のサポートは出来ないが、EDGE、HSUPA、HSDPA、WCDMA などのトラフィックは処理できる。
What’s missing? Not a whole lot aside from support for WiFi or GPS; both of those will have to come from a separate chip. The BCM21551 also lacks support for EV-DO, but can handle EDGE, HSUPA, HSDPA, and WCDMA traffic.

消費電力が小さい
会社の発表によれば、「競合他社の携帯ベースバンドチップでここまでの集積を成し遂げたものはない。これによってコスト、消費電力、サイズが小さくなり、機能は逆に高まった。」
“No competing cellular baseband chip has ever achieved this level of integration, which drives down cost, power and size, while enabling an advanced level of functionality,” said the company in a statement.

バッテリーライフが伸びる
iPhone が登場した様子や、AT&T の 3G ネットワークがサポートされなかった経緯をよくフォローしていれば、アップルおよび AT&T の両社が述べた理由を思い出すだろう。アップル最初の携帯電話は、3G がバッテリーライフに与える影響が理由で 3G をサポートしなかったのだ。BCM21551 はその状況を変えてしまうかもしれない。Broadcom 曰く、低電力のシングルチップに統合された機能によって 3G 電話の「バッテリーライフは非常に長いものとなる」だろうから・・・
If you’ve followed the genesis and launch of the iPhone and its lack of support for AT&T’s 3G network, you’ll recall that one of the reasons cited by Apple and AT&T for not including 3G support in Apple’s first cellular phone was the impact 3G would have on battery life. The BCM21551 may very well change that, as the amount of functionality integrated into a single low-power chip will lead to 3G phones with “very long battery life,” as Broadcom puts it.

価格は 23 ドル
アナリストたちは 3G iPhone の登場が何時になるか予想し始めている。なかには、最近の携帯技術会社 InterDigital との取引によって、3G iPhone の登場もそう遠くないと見るものもいる。Broadcom のチップが iPhone に採用されるかどうかは別にしても、他の端末メーカーが採用するのは間違いない。「大量購入すれば」新チップの価格は 23 ドルだというのだから・・・
Analysts have begun guessing at when a 3G iPhone might arrive, with some seeing a recent deal with cellular tech company InterDigital as an indication that we might see one soon. Regardless of whether Broadcom’s new chip ever surfaces in the iPhone, we will see other handsets with the integrated chip appearing soon, especially with a launch price of $23 in “large quantities.”

このチップなら 3G へのハードルが越えられそうだ。
しかし、iPhone は Infineon のハードを使っているといわれる。3G に移行するためには Broadcom に乗り換えるのだろうか。
他社がいつでも使えるということになると、さてどうなるのか・・・
