アルミとガラスの新 iMac

久しぶりにマック中心のイベントだった。

Macworld 誌の Rob Griffiths の予想はほぼ的中だ。

新しい iMac は、これまでのモニターと一体型のデザインからあまり変わっていないのでホッとした。このフォームファクターはやはり究極のデザインだろう。

黒のベゼルはガラスの画面と密接に関連しているようだ。

ガラス画面はタッチスクリーン化を前提にしているのかと思ったら、必ずしもそうではないようだ。

また、新しいキーボードはちょっと・・・

どうやら Mac mini も生き延びたようでご同慶の至りだ。

iMac のガラス

さらに Jobs は、iMac の素材に使ったガラスはエレガントで引っ掻き傷がつきにくいと語った。

In addition, Jobs said, the glass material used on the iMac is elegant and scratch resistant.

アップルによれば、ガラスはアルミの筐体とぴったり合って、表面にはほとんど凸凹がなくシームレスだという。

According to Apple, the glass cover joins precisely with the aluminum enclosure to create a virtually seamless front surface.

マルチタッチは研究課題

マルチタッチマックに必ずしも肯定的でなかったのは、Q&A セッションのときだった。

During the Q&A portion of today’s keynote, somebody referred the iPhone’s multitouch sensing and asked, “what about for the Mac?” Steve, surprisingly, replied. “Makes sense for the iPhone, not sure it makes sense in the Mac. Classify that as a research project.” So there you have it, straight from the horse’s mouth: Apple is at least considering letting you get all touchy touchy with your Mac’s screen, and you can’t ask for much more than that, right?

プレスカンファレンス後半の質疑応答で挙がった「iPhoneではマルチタッチを採用した。Macについてはどうか」という問いへの回答は、「iPhoneでは意味があったが、Macでも役に立つかははっきりしない。研究プロジェクトに分類しておく」というもの。

つまり研究はしているものの、近日中に製品として登場することはなさそうと考えるしかないようです。(まあ仮に近日中に登場予定があったところで予告する会社ではありませんが)。iPhoneではなくタブレットMacが欲しいかたは(マルチタッチではない) 勝手にMacタブレットModBookで我慢しておきましょう。［Ittousai 氏訳］

アルミ製のキーボード

生き延びた Mac mini

なぜ mini が冷遇されるかについて John Gruber が触れている。

Jobs はミニを嫌っている。だからプレスイベントでも（Q&A セッションになるまで）触れられなかったし、プレスリリースにも載らなかった。それでもアップルは今日ミニを一新した。

Jobs hates the Mini, so it got neither a mention during the event (until the Q&A) nor a press release, but Apple did refresh it today…

何故 Jobs はミニを嫌うのか。プレスイベントでの彼のコメントが参考になる。デルのマシンがディスプレーやウェブカメラにつなぐのにケーブルを張り回さなければならないことをからかったが、それはまたミニにも同じく当てはまるからだった。

As for why Jobs hates it, think about his comments during the event making fun of Dell machines because of the all the cables you need to hook them up to displays and webcams. That all applies equally to the Mini.

iMac は安定したものに見える。ただ、デザインは明らかに過去のモデルの発展型だ。アップルは iMac をプロ向けモデルに仕立てたのではないかと思う。少し高級に見えるようにしたのではないか。確かに価格設定はすばらしい。

The iMac looks solid, though the design is obviously an evolution over the previous version. I’m curious that Apple went with a Pro-style enclosure with the iMac. I wonder if they’re trying to take it a bit more upscale. Certainly, the pricing appears to be excellent.

最後に、アナリストでもある Carl Howe の第一印象・・・

今回の発表のポイントはつぎのとおり。

１）アルミとガラスの２０/２４インチ iMac

• New aluminum and glass 20-inch and 24-inch iMacs.

２）iLife ’08 アプリはより精巧に、より強力に

• iLife ’08 applications are now slicker and more capable.

３）Web 2.0 化した .Mac

• .Mac has gone Web 2.0.

４）iWorks には表計算、ワープロ、プレゼン機能

• Apple’s iWorks adds Numbers to presentation and word processing.

これで（今年の）アップルの経営も安泰だ。何故なら・・・

１）コンシューマ向けコンピュータ製品が新学期、年末のシーズンに間に合うよう市場に出たから

• Apple’s new consumer computer lineup is now in the market.

２）ウインドウズ世界には iLife に匹敵するものがないから

• iLife now has no parallel offering in the Windows world.

３）Microsoft Office が老朽化しつつあることを iWorks が示しているから

• iWorks shows off Microsoft Office’s old age.

結論：今回の発表は、2009 年度の収益を確たるものとした iPhone の華々しい発表とは異なる。しかし、今日 iMac とソフトを発表したことで、アップルが市場に出せる製品をちゃんと持っており、消費者はこの秋と冬に新学期のため、あるいはホームコンピュータとして確実に購入できるということを示した。これらの中核となる製品群により、過去最高の業績はこれからも続くものと思われる。

The bottom line: this wasn’t the glitz of the iPhone launch that set up Apple profits for 2009. Today’s iMac and software launch was about Apple ensuring it had products in the market consumers can buy to take to school and put on home desktops this fall and winter. And with these core products, it looks to me like Apple’s record earnings will just keep on coming.
