自作マックについて考える

マックワールド誌編集者 Rob Griffiths の自作マック記事は大きな反響を呼んだ。

その後マックワールド誌は、趣味の自作者という「自作コミュニティ」（Homebuilt Mac Community）についてさらなる問題提起をしている。

つい最近、私は自作マック（Homebuilt Mac）に関する記事を書いた。今回は自作マックがアップルのビジネスに与える影響について私の考えを述べてみたい。・・・その上で、読者諸氏がこの「自作コミュニティ」についてどう考えるかお尋ねしてみたいのだ。

I recently chronicled my adventures building and using a homebuilt Mac. Now it’s time to step back and opine on how I think homebuilt Macs impact Apple’s business…and ask you, our readers, what you think Apple should do about this community.

アップルのビジネスに悪影響を与えるか

まず最初の質問は、熱狂的マック自作ファン（Homebuilt Mac enthusiasts）がアップルのビジネスに悪影響を与えると心配すべきかどうかという問題だ。部品を集めることから始めて、パーツをコンピュータにくみ上げ、それから OS X が動くように一生懸命頑張る、それをアップルが心配すべきかどうかと聞かれれば、私の答えはノーだ。アップルは趣味の自作者（hobbyist builders）を恐れる必要はない。本当だ。私の場合、強力なクヮッドコアマシンを作るため 982 ドルを投じた。それだけではない。バーツを探し、買い求め、マシンを組み立て、ちゃんと動くようにするのに多大の時間を費やした。私が費やした時間を計算に入れれば、すてきな iMac を買ってそれで済ませた方が（経費的にも）ずっとよかったことは明らかだ。しかもこのマシンの保証はひとつでないので、ひとたびハードの問題が生じた場合は複数のベンダーを相手にせざるを得なくなる点も考えておく必要がある。

The first question to ask is whether or not Apple should fear the impact these homebuilt Mac enthusiasts may have on their business. Given that one has to start with a collection of parts, assemble those parts into a computer, then work quite diligently to make that computer an OS X-enabled machine, my general answer is “no,” Apple need not fear the hobbyist builders. True, I spent only $982 to build a powerful Quad-core machine…but I also spent a large number of hours searching for and buying the parts, assembling the machine, and making it all work. If you add in the value of my time, it’s clear that I would’ve been much better off (financially) just buying a nice iMac and calling it done. Also consider that the finished machine has not one but many warranties, and that any hardware issues may mean dealing with multiple vendors.

自作マックが文字通り自分用のマックを作るというものである限り、アップルが恐れることは何もないと思う。趣味の自作者たちが自分のためのマシンを作っても、アップルの毎期の売り上げに影響を与えるものでないことは明らかだ。そもそもそんな大きな苦労をしてまで自作マックを製作し、それをメンテして、アップルの収益に影響を与えようとするひとがそんなにいるわけはない。（Psystar のマッククローンビジネスは、すぐにもアップルから訴訟を起こされると思われる。もしそれを生き延びたとしたらそれはまた別な話だ・・・）

As long as building your own Mac requires literally building your own Mac, I don’t think Apple has anything to fear—hobbyists and tinkerers may choose to build their own machines, but this is clearly nothing that will have any sort of impact on Apple’s quarterly sales. There just aren’t that many people out there willing to go all of the effort required to build and maintain a do-it-yourself-Mac to have a real bottom-line impact on Apple. (If Psystar’s pre-built Mac clone business survives its probably-imminent legal challenge, then that may be a different story.)

もし［自作マック］コミュニティがアップルに対して大きなマイナスを与えるものではないとしたら、熱狂的マック自作ファンたちに対してアップルは何らかの措置を講じる必要があるのだろうか？

So if the community isn’t going to have a tremendous negative impact on Apple, what, if anything, should Apple do regarding these homebuilt Mac enthusiasts?

その１：無視する

ひとつの方法は、これら趣味のハッカー（hobbyist hackers）をまったく無視することだ。これまでアップルはそうしてきたように思える。アップルに実質的影響を与えるわけではないので、ホビイストと争うことは有益というよりむしろ面倒の方が多い。アップルがこういうグループを無視してきたことを示す証拠はあるだろうか。例えばそのひとつとして、OSx86 プロジェクトをウェブから駆逐しようとしなかったことが挙げられる。OSx86 プロジェクトのサイトは、generic PC［ホワイトボックス PC、無印  PC］で OS X を走らせるための事実上の情報源（de facto source）となっている。

One approach—which appears to be the approach Apple’s taken thus far—is to simply ignore these hobbyist hackers. Since there’s no real measurable impact on Apple, fighting the hobbyists may be more trouble than it’s worth. What evidence do we have to support the theory that Apple is ignoring this segment thus far? For one, there’s been no apparent effort to remove the osx86 project web site, which is the defacto source for information on running OS X on generic PCs.

自作者たちを無視すべきだと考えるもうひとつの理由は、長い目で見れば、結局これらのユーザーはアップルのハードの売り上げを増加させる可能性があるからだ。例えば自作マックを作った連中は、システムアップデートの都度それに遅れず付いていくために必要な作業がいやになり、本物のマックを買おうと決心するかもしれないからだ。あるいはまた、それほど技術に詳しくない友人に対して OS X の良さを説き、次に買うときは iMac か他のアップルマシンにするように薦めるかもしれないのだ。

Another reason to ignore the homebuilders is that, in the long run, in fact, this group of users may actually help increase Apple’s hardware sales—people who build their own Mac may then decide they’re tired of the work required to keep up with system updates, for instance, and decide to purchase a real Mac. Or perhaps they’ll tell their less-technically-inclined friends about the benefits of OS X, and recommend that they purchase an iMac or other Apple product for their next machine.

その２：相手を取り込む

［無視する代わりに］もうひとつの方法として、自作者のコミュニティを取り込むというやり方もある。問題はどんな方法でやるかということなのだが・・・。OS X の新しいバージョンをアップル以外のコンピュータでもインストールできるようにするか。マザーボードと無印 PC パーツ（generic PC parts）だけという「Mac Lite」を実際に出してみるか。自作マシンのために限られた組み合わせの CPU とマザーボードを認めてやるか。あるいはまったく別のやり方をするか・・・

Alternatively, Apple could embrace the homebuilt community…but the question would be how. Would that be a new version of OS X that doesn’t restrict installation to an Apple-labeled computer? An actual line of “Mac Lite” machines that are basically motherboards and generic PC parts? Sanctioning a few combinations of motherboards and CPUs for people to use as a basis for building their own machines? Something else entirely?

さっそくマックワールド誌ラボテストの結果が出た。

予想どおりのすばらしいものだが、最後の感想が印象的だ。

… this particular build-it-yourself system definitely delivers impressive performance, perhaps suggesting how a mythical mid-range Mac minitower would perform if Apple ever released one.

Psystar のミステリーマン

［Psystar office?］

マッククローンを売り出すという Psystar については不明なことが多すぎるようだ。

Forbes が Psystar 社長との電話インタビューに成功して、その話を記事にしている。

Psystar 社長の Rudy Pedraza と電話で語ったところ、［新しい事業はネット詐欺ではないかという非難に対して］Psystar はホンモノだという。「それはまったくの間違いだ。我々はひとからカネを巻き上げようとしているのではない。正当に稼ぎたいだけだ。」

Get Psystar President Rudy Pedraza on the phone, however, and he insists Psystar is for real. “That’s just completely wrong–we’re not out to steal anyone’s money, we want to earn it,” Pedraza says.

彼の言い分は、需要の大きさに会社が圧倒されたというのだ。クレジットカードの処理件数が膨大なものとなったため、クレジット請求を扱う PowerPay が彼の口座を凍結してしまった。新しく PayPal に変えてみたが、それもすぐにパンクしてしまった。

His explanation? The company has been overwhelmed by demand. He says his credit card processor, PowerPay, locked down his account for processing too many credit cards. When he turned to PayPal, Pedraza says Psystar’s account with the online payments specialist was quickly overloaded, too.

Pedraza explains the address changes by saying he had to move the company into a 40,000-square-foot warehouse. “We have thousands of machines we have to build and ship out,” Pedraza says.

「製品を提供できないわけでもなければ、アップルが製品提供を辞めさせるということでもないんだ。ほんとのところは、クレジットカードの処理ができないだけなんだ。」Pedraza によれば、間もなく注文を受け付けられるようになるだろうという。

“It’s not that we can’t provide the product or [that] Apple can stop us from providing the product,” Pedraza says, adding he’ll be able to start taking orders again soon. “The truth is, we can’t process your credit card.”

それでも Pedraza は、普通のスタートアップなら黙っておれない細かい点について口を閉ざしている。例えば彼の学歴や職歴、前の仕事といったことだ。同社の Open Computer は、弟が作ったものをベースにしているという。（弟の名前は明らかにしない。）その新しいコンピュータがどうやって動くのかについても彼は明らかにしない。彼のいうところでは、従業員の数は１６名で、更に４名採用したばかりだという。

Still, Pedraza is short on the sorts of details most startups won’t shut up about. He won’t go on the record about his educational background, detail his professional history or name any previous ventures. The company’s Open Computer is based on a machine put together by his brother (whom he won’t name), he says. Nor will he say how the new computer works. He will say the company has 16 employees, and he just hired four more.

Pedraza, however, says Apple can do better. “The real problem is you have to buy Apple hardware to use [Apple software] and that’s preventing many people that would otherwise run OS X from being able to use it,” says Pedraza, adding that he’s paying retail price for Apple’s software every time he installs it on a new machine. “I just want to help Steve Jobs make more money.”

Pedraza says he hasn’t heard from Apple about his venture–yet. Is he nervous about what Apple will say? “Nope.”

Psystar はどうやら怪しげな気配になっているようだ。

ところがクローンマックの話は思わぬところへ飛び火した。なんとマックワールド誌の Rob Griffiths がやってのけたのだ。

市販の PC パーツから Mac OS X が動く自家製マックを組み立ててしまった！

マックワールド誌の編集者で、常々「中クラスの Mac minitower」を渇望していた Rob Griffiths は、次のようにいう。

待ちくたびれた

モニター一体型のマシンは欲しいとは思わないし必要もない。８コア Mac Pro のパワーも必要ない。しかしミニより速くて拡張性のあるマシンなら欲しい。

I don’t want or need a machine with a built-in monitor, I don’t need the power of an eight-core Mac Pro, but I’d like my Mac to be faster and more expandable than a mini. […]

しかし私のドリームマシンが出るのを待つのはもう待ちくたびれた。そこで自分の手で組み立てようと決心した。かくて OS X が動く自分のマシンを組み立てることになった。

Tired of waiting and hoping for the Mac of my dreams to appear, I decided to take the technology into my own hands and build it myself. And thus began my experiment to assemble my very own OS X-running machine.

PC パーツを集める

かくて、1000 ドルの範囲内で自家製マックを組み立てるプロジェクトに取りかかる。

Windows Vista が動く PC パーツで、かつ Mac OS X も動くパーツを集めるのが最初の仕事だ。

マザーボードは Asus P5K-E、CPU は Intel Q6600 Core 2 Quad（2.4GHz）。モニターやキーボードを除いて、集めたパーツは 980 ドルになった。

ハードそのものの組み立てはやさしかった。

OS X のインストールは大変だ

次にこの PC に Vista をインストールした。ちゃんと動く。それからが事だった。ちゃんと OS X が動くようにするのに何時間もかかった。やることは簡単なのだが、その手間や BIOS 設定が込み入っていた。同じドライブから Windows と OS X を動かすには、いくつもの難題を片付けねばならなかった。何時間もかけて、説明書を読み、組み立てては分解し、うめき声をあげ、インストール、アンインストール、再インストールを繰り返し、悪態をつき、みんなを困らせる。とても楽しいどころではなかったが、それでもなんとかすべてを終えることが出来た。私のマシンはちゃんと動いた。Windows Vista にでも Mac OS X 10.5.2 にでも、どちらにでも起動することができた。

Next, I installed Vista on the PC, just to be sure everything worked. From there, it then took many more hours to get OS X working right—while the process is relatively straightforward, there are a lot of steps involved, and BIOS settings to tweak. If you want to run Windows and OS X on the same drive, there are more hoops to jump through to get it all working. But after many hours of reading, assembling, disassembling, screaming, installing, uninstalling, reinstalling, saying bad words, pestering friends, and generally not having very much fun, I was done: my machine was up and running, and capable of booting into either Windows Vista or Mac OS X 10.5.2.

Frankenmac

出来上がった自家製マックは Frankenmac［注：フランケンシュタインから］と名付けられた。

テキストベースのブートローダ

起動中にこのマシンの前に座っていると、 BIOS のロードスクリーンになり、テキストベースのブートローダ（ここで Vista にするか OS X にするかを選択する）になる。それが普通のマックとは異なるところで、試供品のサンプルみたいだ。

And if you happen to be sitting in front of it when it starts up, the BIOS loading screen and black-and-white text-based boot loader (which lets me choose between Vista and OS X) is a dead giveaway that this is not your normal Mac.

Frankenmac の本体を隠してモニターだけを見ていると、まったく普通のマックと変わらない。

しかし「この Mac について」ダイアログを見ると、「プロセッサ不明」（”unknown” processor）と表示される。

性能は・・・

Rob Griffiths のベンチマークテストでは、値段が倍以上する Mac Pro と比べてもさして引けを取らないという。いずれマックラボのテストに委ねるそうだから、後ほど詳細が分るだろう。

とてもみんなには勧められない

以上の結果をみて「スゴいっ！ボクもやってみよう！」と考えるひとがいるかもしれない。ちょっと待て！自家製マックにはいろんな（しかもたくさんの）落し穴があるのだ。

Given the above results, you may be thinking “Geez, I should go build one myself!” Before making such a decision, however, you need to consider the pitfalls of building your own Mac—and there are many.

奇妙な振る舞い

マシンが動くようになっても、奇妙なハードウェアの振る舞いを経験したりする。例えば Frankenmac の場合、ちゃんとシャットダウンしないのだ。OS X 自体は終了してスクリーンが暗くはなるのだが、ファンやハードドライブは動いたままだ。完全にマシンを終了するには、手動でパワーボタンを押す必要がある。

Even if your machine is running fine, you may experience odd hardware issues—the Frankenmac, for instance, doesn’t fully shut down properly. OS X itself shuts down, and the screen goes blank, but the fans and hard drive continue to run, so I have to manually press the power button to truly turn the machine off.

アップデートや EULA の問題

また、将来システムアップデートによってはインストールした OS X に問題が生ずる可能性も大きい。今後の Software Update はむやみに受け入られなくなる。最後にもっと重要なことは、自作マシンで Mac OS X を動かすとアップルの EULA［End User License Agreement：使用許諾契約書］違反となり、やり方によっては著作権法違反にもなるかもしれないということだ。

There’s also a good chance that future system updates may cause problems with my Mac OS X installationﾑI can’t just blindly accept every Software Update that comes down the pipeline. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, to make your machine run Mac OS X, you have to violate the OS X end-user license agreementﾑand perhaps copyright law, depending on how you get things done.

仕上がりの美しさ

その他にも仕上がりの美しさという点で、本物のマックにはとうてい及ばない。Mac Pro と Frankenmac の内部を比較した写真はつぎのとおりだ。

結論は・・・

マックの自作を試してみた結果、自分でやるよりクパチーノの会社に作ってもらう方がずっといいという結論に達した。それに、いつの日か、私の夢である「中クラスの Mac minitower」が現実のものになるかもしれないのだから・・・

Having visited the build-your-own side of the Mac world, I’ve decided I’m more than happy letting Cupertino build my Macs for me—Apple has shown it’s much better at it than I am. And who knows? Maybe one day that mid-range Mac minitower of my dreams will no longer be mythical.

本流も本流、マックワールド誌の編集者がやってのけたところがスゴい！

さすがに OS X インストールの詳細には触れていないが、マック誌の性格からして当然だろう。

しかし、インターネットを渉猟して得られる情報と市販の PC パーツを買い揃えれば、然るべき知識と技術があるひとなら誰でも「Mac OS X の走るマシン＝自家製マック」を作ることが可能だと示した点で画期的だと思う。

Yesterday, Mike posted about the new commercial hackintosh from Psystar. Many of our readers noted that, wow, that was a lawsuit waiting to happen — or as Fake Steve put it, Psystar is French for “We’re about to go out of business”.

マックという名前：

製品名に「マック」という名前を使うのはいかにもまずそうだ。そこで Psystar は「Open Computer」という名前に変えてしまった。

The Mac name Using “Mac” in the product name was probably a bad idea. Psystar just re-named the platform to “Open Computer” instead.

Leopard のプリインストール：

アップル以外のハードウェアに Leopard をインストールするのはアップルの EULA 違反だと考えられる。Parallels や VMware といった仮想化ソフトのベンダーは、ソフトの開発にこの制限があることをすでに認めている。さもなければ、両社とも Mac OS X Server だけでなく、どんな PC でも Leopard を走らせることが出来るバーチャルマシンをとっくに出していることだろう。

Pre-installing Leopard It would seem that installing Leopard on non-Apple hardware is a violation of Apple’s EULA. Psystar は正規の作者の同意を得ることなく、またソフト頒布の許可を得ないで、EFI ブートローダを使用しているように思われる。

これだけの騒ぎになっているのに、アップル法務の動きがなにも聞こえてこないのも奇妙だ。

インテル移行によってハード的に PC とマックの差はほとんどなくなった。すでに仮想化ソフトもいくつも出ており、遅かれ早かれマック互換機が登場するのは時間の問題のような気がする。

Psystar に実体があるのかどうか不明だが、ここまで騒ぎが大きくなった背景には安価なマック互換機を求めるひとがたくさんいるということだろう。

Woz や若旦那だって欲しいといっている。ほんとに安価な互換機が出るのなら、筆者だって２台目マックとしてぜひ欲しいものだ。

iPhone そっくりさんはピンキリ

Wired が iPhone のニセモノ（iClone）特集をしている。いや、これがなかなかのもの・・・

模倣こそ最大の褒め言葉だといわれる。もしそうなら、アップルはひどく気分がいいに違いない。これらのケータイはどれも、タッチスクリーンやら物真似画像によって、例の典型的「神の電話」（Jesus phone）を真似しようとしているのだ。しかし、ふんどしを締めてよく調べてみると、欠陥が見え始める。

で、タートルネック５つでそのトップが冒頭の Samsung F700 というわけ。そのスペックを見るとこれがまた大したもの。

なかなかおもしろいので、２位以下もご自分の目で確かめていただきたい。

これを見ていると、まがい物とか模造品と呼んで済ませられるかという気もしてくる。

二番手以降は二番煎じ、コピーキャットなどと嘲られるのが常だが、ほんとにそうだろうか？

トップの製品を短い期間で凌駕するのも技術力かもしれないと思ったりする。
