iPhone ハックツール「Pwnage」の OS X 版がついに公開された。

その同じ日に、Erica Sadun が iPhone Dev Team とのライブ中継を試みている。

これがなかなかおもしろい。

ハッカーとの実際のやり取りについて窺わせてくれるだけでなく、ハッカーとの距離の置き方、ハッカーという存在の受容などに関して彼我の相違を考えさせてくれるからだ。

エリカ：非署名コード（unsigned code）ってアップルが認めていないコードのこと？　そもそも署名（signing）って何？

pytey： 署名というのは暗号で使う方法のことで、ファイルに指紋をつけて特定のちゃんとしたソースからのものであることを明らかにするものだ。

エリカ：Ipsw バンドルというのはファームウェアをアップグレードする際にダウンロードするヤツのことね？

Pwnage Tool で出来ること

エリカ： pytey、「ipwning」ツールでどんなことが出来るか教えて。boot neutering（中性化ブート）や ipsw installation については話したけれど、あとどんなことが出来るの？

pytey：エリカ、このプラットフォームのためにカネを出すと Kleiner Perkins のヤツがいってたことさ。iPhone は新しい C64［Commodore C64］なんだ。このデバイスをいじればデベロッパのやりたいことは何でもできる。無限の可能性だ。

pytey：Boot Neutering はベースバンド信号のハックみたいなものだ。デベロッパのやりたいことが出来るようになる。いろんなことがね。もちろんロック解除もそのひとつだが・・・

再度 Pwnage Tool について

エリカ：Pwnage Tool の動作のもっと一般的な話をして・・・

NerveGas：エリカ、iPwner の基本的役割は integrity check［整合性チェック、変更チェック、指紋照合］を無視するようにデバイスを変更することだ。それで無署名のファームウェアをインストールできるようになる。

NerveGas：無署名のパッケージとは基本的には iTunes からダウンロードするアップルのファームウェアアップデートのこと。あといくつかの追加のツール。例えば installer app、boot neuter app、そのほかやってみたいどんな改造でも・・・

こんなやりとりが１時間半にわたって続く。

紳士的［エリカは淑女的？］やり取りであることがまず印象的だ。

ハッカー側にもふんぞり返ったところが全然ない。専門用語で相手を煙に巻こうともせず、相手の質問に一生懸命答えようという姿勢が見える。

対するエリカも練達のプログラマーに教えを乞うという感じ。

エリカが探ってくるハッカー情報の背景にはこんなやり取りがあるということだろう。ライブ中継に彼らが参加するだけの信頼を勝ち取ったということはスゴいことだ。

この背景には、ハッカー文化の受容に関する彼我の差があるのかもしれない。

なお、ロシア語や時差について言及していることから、pytey はロシア人ではないかという感じを受ける。

そういえば、Pwnage のデモビデオの冒頭につぎのような画像が出てくる。［YouTube ビデオおよびこちら参照］

なぜロシアでのデモなのか不思議に思ったものだが、iPhone Dev Team はロシア人を含むインターナショナルな存在なのかもしれない。

とまれ、ハッカーとアップルのせめぎ合いは新しい局面を迎えたような気がする。

iPhone/iPod touch というデバイスについて、自分が認めるやり方でなければ使わせないというアップルと、デバイスが潜在的に持つ可能性を解き放とうとするハッカー/プログラマーの間のせめぎ合いだ。

iPhone SDK とも絡み合って今後どういう展開を遂げるのか目が離せない。

Pwnage で iPhone を完全ハック

iPhone Dev Team による iPhone ハックソフト「Pwnage」が公開されるという。Erica Sadun がスクープしたように iTunes の牢破りが実現するわけだ。

Pwnage を使えば、事前にハックした iPhone firmware を iTunes を通じて読み込むことが可能になるのだという。アップデートした後にわざわざ牢破り（jailbreaking）しなくても、牢破り済みのシステムをインストールすればいいというわけ・・・

遂に iPhone は完全ハックされる［PWNED：付記参照］ことになる。

iPhone PWNED プロジェクト大公開

明日３月３０日（日）、いよいよ待望の「iPhone PWNED」プロジェクトが公開される！　YouTube でも見かけたものだが、多くのひとは信じなかった。これは間違いなく本物だ。これでカスタムメイドのファームウェアを iPhone に読み込むことが可能になる。

As of tomorrow, Sunday, March 30?th, the long awaited project iPhone PWNED will be available to the public! – it’s what we’ve seen on YouTube and many of us have disbelieved. However, it is real and allows for custom unsigned firmware to be flashed on to the iPhone.

アップルからの完全な独立

質問：ユーザーは PWN で何が出来るのですか。

theiphoneproject: What does PWN accomplish for the users?

デベロッパ：iPhone（および iPod Touch）で何ができて何ができないかというアップルの考えから完全に独立できることです。今のところ牢破りされ（jailbroken）、あるいはロック解除された（unlocked）状態に復元することができます。その他にも、Installer、Cydia ほかのアプリをインストールするなどクールなことができます。いずれ将来は、iPhone の全内容をバックアップしたり、あるいはお望みの状態へそっくり復元することもできるようになります。例えば、インストーラを使って直接牢破りした状態にしたり、Linux のような他の OS（複数）をインストールしたりできるのです。

The Devs: Full independence from Apple’s vision on what the iPhone (and iPod Touch) can and cannot do. Currently it will allow you to restore to a jailbroken and unlocked state, and if you can figure it out – some extra cool stuff like Installer, Cydia, and other applications. You will eventually be able to backup your entire phone and restore to a state exactly the way you like it, restore straight to jailbroken state with installer, or even potentially install other OSes like linux (see iphonelinux.org) to your phone.

iPhone を完全にコントロール

質問：ZiPhone など他の方法があるのに、なぜ Pwnage が必要なのですか。

theiphoneproject: Why should I use this instead of ZiPhone? (or any other method in that case)

デベロッパ：それは Pwnage によって iPhone が初めて完全にコントロールできるようになるからです。ZiPhone のようなこれまでのやり方は、搭載されている iPhone OS に侵入し、必要なものをインストールして攻撃する方法をとっています。これはアップルが OS に加えた制限を外そうとするものですが、やれることには限度があり、我々のやり方とは根本的に異なります。我々のやり方は iPhone の一番基礎となるレイヤーを完全にコントロールするものです。アップル自身がこれまでテストし、使ってきた復元メカニズムを使うのです。これはより安全な牢破りだともいえるでしょう。ハッカーがこの方法の可能性に気付き、それを利用するようになれば、もっといろんなことが出来るようになると思います。

The Devs: Because it is the first time you can fully take control over your device. Previous solutions such as ZiPhone rely on exploits to break into an existing installation of iPhone OS, and install stuff into your device that way. Those approaches are fundamentally different from ours, in that they attempt to correct what Apple’s restricted in the OS after the fact, and only have limited power in what they can do to it. Our approach takes full control of the lowest layers of Apple’s device, and allows a much safer kind of jailbreak, that uses Apple’s tried and tested restore mechanism. It will also allow much more when hackers realize all the new possibilities this method opens up and start taking advantage of them.

お望みの状態に復元可能

質問：やり方を簡単に説明してください。

theiphoneproject: Can you give us an overview of the process?

デベロッパ：正直、とても簡単です。これは Pwnage の最初のバージョンですが、IPSW の構築はこれまで Mac OS X でのみサポートされていました。まず最初にやることは、現在使っているファームウェアの公式 IPSW を用意することです。（使っているのが 1.1.4 なら 1.1.4 をダウンロードしてください。）それから Pwnage ツールを立ち上げ、「.ipsw をブラウズする」をクリックして、ダウンロードしたファームウェアのファイルをブラウズします。つぎに「iPwner」ボタンをクリックして、Pwnage が iPhone ブートローダをパッチするのを見守ります。これでコードの符号チェックを迂回することが可能になります。その後 iPhone が再起動します。iPhone が再起動したら、Pwnage を終了し、それからもう一度立ち上げます。

The Devs: In all honesty, it’s quite simple. This is the first release of Pwnage, and the process of building an IPSW is thus far only supported on Mac OS X. The first thing to do is make sure you have the Official IPSW of the firmware you are running (eg. If you are running 1.1.4, download 1.1.4). Now open the Pwnage tool, and click “Browse .ipsw” and browse to the firmware file that you just downloaded. Next you click the “iPwner” button, and watch as PWNAGE patches the iPhone bootlader [sic], making it possible to circumvent any code signing checks. After this, your iPhone will reboot. As the iPhone reboots, exit the Pwnage app, and reopen it.

マジックはここからです。iPhone が再起動したら IPSW Builder をクリックします。ビルドのオプションがいくつか表示されます。牢破り、ロック解除などです。新しく BootNeuter もありますが、これは究極のロック解除です。一旦 IPSW をカスタマイズしたら OK ボタンを押し、Pwnage に復元ファイルを作成させます。つぎは iTunes です。復元ボタンをオプションクリックして作成したばかりのカスタム ipsw に進み、OK ボタンを押せばそれで完了です。あとは iTunes がお望みの状態（牢破りされたものであれロック解除されたものであれ）に復元してくれます。

Here is where the magic happens, once the phone has rebooted, click on “IPSW Builder,” and you are presented with a list of the building options (jailbreak, unlock, etc..) including the all new “BootNeuter,” the ultimate iPhone unlocking solution. Once you have customized your IPSW, hit OK and let Pwnage build the restore file. Next we head to iTunes, option+click on the restore button, and navigate to the custom ipsw that you just created,. Hit OK and we’re done! iTunes will restore the iPhone to the state of your choosing (Be it jailbroken, unlocked etc…).

iPhone Dev Team の説明を聞くと、YouTube ビデオのやっていることも分かりやすくなる。

ハックされた iPhone をアップルが「レンガ化」するのと同じレベルで牢破りするのだとすると、これは大変なことになりそうだ。

すでにハッカーの手になる iPhone プログラミングの本も登場している。

iPhone SDK のベータバーションが出たばかりだが、６月までにはいろんなことが起きそうだ。

ところで Pwnage のニュースには続きがあって、法律問題のチェックで公表が遅れるとか、公開するのをやめて匿名の第三者に一切譲渡するなどという話も流れた。

後者はエイプリルフールのジョークであることが判明したが、iPhone のハッキング情報に強い Erica Sadun も今回は振り回された感じがある。

付記：PWN、PWNAGE

今回のハッキングに関して、PWN とか PWNAGE ということばが至る所で使われている。

もともとはゲーマー用語で、相手をやっつけたときに “you just got pwned!” のように使う。他に “pwnage” といういい方もある。「勝った、やっつけた、制覇した」の意。

勝つ意味で “own” と綴るべきを、タイプミスで “pwn” と間違えたのが始まりらしい。読み方はいろいろあるらしいが、own の韻を踏んだ［ポウン］や pawn と同じ［ポーン］と発音するのが普通のようだ。

セキュリティの世界では to compromise（改ざんする）や to control（支配下におく）の意味で使われ、hacking や cracking と同意義にも使われる。

どうやら牢破り（Jailbreak）の新手が登場しつつあるようだ。

「カボチャ畑ニュースサービス」［pumpkin patch news service：カボチャ畑 pumpkin patch、修正パッチ、ハッカーの Pumpkin をひっかけた「ハッカーニュース」の意か？］からこんどは何が飛び出すだろうか。ここにひとつのビデオがある。事前に牢破りした iPhone を、ハッカーが iTunes を使って 1.1.4 にアップデートするビデオだ。iPhone ソフトのセット（ipsw ファイル）は事前にハックされていて、iTunes によってアップデートされるのは完全にハックされたシステムだ。

Guess what’s come out of the pumpkin patch news service this time? A video that shows hackers using iTunes to restore an already-jailbroken and activated 1.1.4. The iPhone software bundle (the ipsw file) has been pre-hacked and updates through iTunes to a fully hacked system.

ほかのハック同様、これもまだ完成の域には達していない。proof-of-concept［コンセプトを実証するためのもの、実証コード］の例としてハッカーがデモしたものだ。実際に SDK が出たら、彼らはこの方法を公開することになるだろう。

Like other hack previews, this one is not yet ready for prime-time. The developers put this together as a proof-of-concept, but hey’ll [sic] likely be releasing this method when the actual SDK comes out.

本家アップルによる iPhone のロック解除

アップルが iPhone をロック解除すると、数秒しかかからないという。

あの牢破り（jailbreak）騒動はなんだったのか・・・

追加料金 600 ユーロが必要

ドイツの MacNotes.de は、ロックフリー iPhone を買った顧客の話を載せている。

MacNotes.de (German) provides early notes and experiences from customers who have bought unlocked iPhones in Germany.

ロックを外した初めての iPhone が、１１月２１日にドイツで販売された。SIM カードをロックした通常のiPhone に比べると、かなり値段が高く、追加料金が 600 ユーロも必要だ。ここで「ロックを外した」（SIM-unlocked）とは、AT&T や T-Mobile のような特定のネットワークプロバイダに固定されず、どのキャリアの SIM カードでも使えるという意味だ。

The first SIM-unlocked iPhones went on sale in Germany on November 21st with a considerable (600 euro) premium over the usual SIM-locked iPhones. “Unlocked” simply means that the phone is not tied to any one network provider (such as AT&T or T-Mobile) and can accept any SIM card.

ロック解除方法

ロック解除の方法はつぎのとおり。まず、通常の（ロックされた）iPhone を購入し、他に追加料金を払う（合計で 999 ユーロ）。その際、iPhone のシリアルナンバー（IMEI number）が記録され、アップルに送信される。約２４時間後にアップルのデータベースがアップデートされる。その時点で iPhone を iTunes に接続すると、自動的にロックが解除される。（記事によれば「ほんの数秒」だという。）その後、ロック解除された iPhone を iTunes に同期させる。ロック解除後のファームウェアはバージョン 1.1.2 のままだ。このやり方についてはいくつも疑問があるが、アップル非公認のロック解除法もすぐに登場しそうだ。

The unlocking process is as follows: You simply buy a regular iPhone (“locked”) and pay the additional premium (999 euro total). Your iPhone’s IMEI number is recorded and sent to Apple. After 24 hours or so, Apple’s database is updated. At this stage, once you connect your iPhone to iTunes, the iPhone is automatically unlocked in a process that is described as taking only “seconds”. You can then proceed to sync your now-unlocked iPhone with iTunes. The firmware remains at version 1.1.2 after the unlock. 一時差し止め命令

ドイツにおけるロックフリー iPhone の発売は、T-Mobile に対する一時的差し止め命令（temporary injunction）によって強いられたものだ。将来裁判所によって覆される可能性もある。

The sale of unlocked iPhones in Germany was forced by a temporary injunction against T-Mobile, and could potentially be overturned at a future court date.

それとは別に、フランスにおいては国内法の定めるところにより、６か月後にはロックフリー iPhone を販売しなければならない。従って、iTunes の［ロック解除］インフラはそのまま残しておく必要がある。フランスにおける iPhone の発売開始は１１月２９日だ。

Regardless, Apple is required to offer unlocked iPhones in France after 6 months according to French law, so the infrastructure must remain available in iTunes. The iPhone will launch in France on November 29th.

バックエンド部分はまだ未完成か・・・

どう見ても奇妙で、まだ未完成ではないかと思われるのが、アップルに対し T-Mobile が電話の IMEI［international mobile equipment identifier：携帯電話の機体識別番号］を送信しなければならないという部分だ。アメリカでは iPhone のアクチベーションをシームレスかつ瞬時にしようと、アップルがすごいこだわりを見せている。それに比べると、データベースをアップデートして iPhone が使えるようになるまで２４時間も待つ必要があるというのは、クパチーノのユーザー体験担当デザイナーにとってはイライラする話だろう。もし裁判所命令がこれからも有効なら、きっと T-Mobile や Orange は、そのバックエンド［ユーザーには見えない後方支援のデータ処理部分］を統合して、このプロセスをスピードアップするに違いない。

The clearly awkward and probably not finished part is the need for T-Mobile to record and transmit the phone IMEI (that’s the phone’s unique electronic serial number used on the phone network) to Apple. Given Apple’s obsession in making the whole iPhone activation a seamless and near-instantaneous experience here in the US, the concept that a customer has to wait 24 hours for a database update in Germany to use their unlocked iPhone must grate on the user experience designers in Cupertino. I expect to see some further back-end integration for T-Mobile and Orange to speed this process up in the future should the court order stand.

以下はまったくの想像だが、つぎのようなシナリオはどうだろうか。

１）キャリアの加入契約からアップルが吸い上げる分は非常に大きい。

２）アップルは１国１キャリアというビジネスモデルに固執する。

３）キャリアからの収入を確保するため IMEI の報告を求めて、キャリア販売分を正確に抑える。

４）オイシい話を阻害する iPhone のロック解除には徹底的に抗戦する。

５）しかし jailbreak は防ぎようが無い。

６）ドイツ（裁判所命令）とフランス（国内法）ではロックフリーの iPhone を売らざるを得なくなった。

７）そこで本来台数確認のためだった IMEI を活用して、ロック解除の対抗策とする。

８）途中から出てきた話なので、iTunes によるロック解除には時間がかかる。

この想像が当たっているかどうかは別にして、アップルにとってキャリアの iPhone 加入契約が非常にオイシい話であることは間違いないようだ。

明日はいよいよフランスで iPhone が発売される。

ロックフリー iPhone に関する情報ももっと出てくることだろう。

先日 Steve Jobs が、お忍びでパリを訪れた理由もあきらかになるかもしれない。

TIFF の脆弱性は修正

間違いなくハッカーコミュニティにとっては大騒ぎになるだろう。以前のアップデートではそうだった。我々は決して iPod ハッキングを擁護するわけではないが、TIFF の脆弱性（MacNN 参照）を衝いたあまり激しくないハッキングによって、1.1.1 iPhone の牢破りやハックが行われているが、その脆弱性は修正されてしまった。最新の牢破りは無効になったということだ。

Undoubtedly, 1.1.2 will send the hacking community into frenzy – the previous update certainly did. We’re not advocating hacking your iPod in any way, of course, but some gentle experimentation shows that the TIFF exploit (described over at MacNN) which could be used to jailbreak and hack the 1.1.1 iPhone has been closed, rendering the latest attempts to jailbreak the phone obsolete.

iJailbreak の作者は１３才

「jailbreak」（牢破り）とはよくいったものだ。

iPhone/iPod touch にはすばらしい能力が隠されている。なんとかしてその能力を引っ張り出したい。そのためには「牢破り」（jailbreak）しかないというわけだ。

iPhone より難しいといわれた iPod touch の牢破りが成功した。しかも１３才の少年の手によって・・・

iPod touch がハックされた

とうとう OS X ベースのアップルガジェットを牢破りする楽しみは、iPhone の持ち主に限られなくなった。iPod touch に掛かっているロックは iPhone 以上といわれたものだ。iPhone の場合とちがって、iPod touch をクラックしてもアップルとしては AT&T との契約収入を失うわけではないのだからこれは奇妙なことだ。

At long last, iPhone owners are no longer the only ones who get to have any fun with jailbreaking OS X-based Apple gadgets. The iPod touch has proven to be even more locked down than the iPhone, which is surprising since cracking the iPod touch doesn’t mean Apple will lose out on AT&T contract revenues like it does when the iPhone is unlocked.

iJailbreak はもっとやさしい

それはともかく、iPod touch のための「iJailbreak」が公表された。これを使うと iPhone の AppTapp と同じように簡単になるという。（ウェブにはこれまでのやり方も詳細に載っているが、iJailbreak の方がもっと簡単だそうだ。）ユーザーは、iJailbreak を起動し、iPod touch とつなぎ、それから上部にあるロック/電源ボタンを入れて再起動するだけ。あとは全部 iJailbreak がやってくれる。その結果、ホームスクリーンに Installer アプリのアイコンが追加される。これでいつでもサードパーティ製アプリでロックンロールが楽しめるというわけ・・・

Regardless, iJailbreak for the iPod touch has been released, which claims to offer the same ease-of-use that AppTapp does for the iPhone (a previous process was detailed online, but iJailbreak is said to make the process much easier). Users simply need to run iJailbreak, hook up an iPod touch, and restart it using the lock/power button atop the device. iJailbreak handles the rest, eventually placing the Installer.app icon on the iPod touch’s home screen, ready to rock and roll with third-party apps.

「AriX」と名乗る１３才のハッカーが、iPod touch のハッキングを自動化するツール iJailBreak を公開した。これまでの二つのハッキング成果を使っている。ひとつは、Niacin と Dre がやった「TIFF」ハック、もうひとつはデスクトップからコマンドラインで iPhone へのアクセスを可能にする「iPhuc」だ。一旦稼働すると、iJailBreak はアップル以外の非公式ソフトを Touch に簡単にインストールするのに使える。iJailBreak は GNU General Public License バージョン２に従っており、Google Code からダウンロードできる。現在のバージョンは v0.2.1、Mac OS X 搭載のインテルマックでしか動かない。パワー PC 版は開発中だという。

A 13-year-old coder going by the alias of “AriX” has released iJailBreak, a tool meant to automate the process of hacking the iPod touch. Two previous pieces of hacking code are used: first is the TIFF exploit developed by “Niacin” and “Dre,” while the second is iPhuc, a program meant to grant command-line access to an iPhone via desktops. Once run, iJailBreak can be used to simplify the installation of unofficial software on a Touch. iJailBreak is covered under v2 of the GNU General Public License, and available for download from Google Code; currently at v0.2.1, the app will only run on Intel Macs with Mac OS X Tiger, but a PowerPC version is said to be in development.

1.1.1 firmware でも問題ないが・・・

Niacin/Dre によるハックは先週公表されたばかりで、iPhone/iPod touch の read/write を可能にするものだった。非常に重要な点は、アップルの v1.1.1 firmware と互換性があるということだ。v1.1.1 firmware はすべてのサードパーティ製ソフト（AT&T 以外の SIM カードを使えるようにしたソフトを含む）を動かないようにしたことで悪名高い。Niacin および Dre によれば、このハッキングはまだ完全なものではなく、もしアップルが今後のアップデートで TIFF の欠陥を修復すれば、ハックはダメになり、ユーザーは手動でリセットしなければならなくなると警告している。

The Niacin/Dre hack was first revealed just last week, and allows read and write access to both iPhones and iPod touches. Critically, it is compatible with Apple’s v1.1.1 firmware, which notoriously disabled all previous third-party code, including software that allowed non-AT&T SIM cards in the iPhone. Niacin and Dre warn that their hack is currently very tenuous; should Apple fix the TIFF flaw in a later update, the hack will be broken, and users will have to manually reset their devices.

不協和音が聞こえ始めた iPhone Dev Team

破竹の勢いで iPhone ハックに取り組んできた iPhone Dev Team だが、どうやら内部分裂が始まったらしい。

臨時にチームを組んだオープンソースのデベロッパたちが遭遇するチャレンジのひとつは、遅かれ早かれ不協和音が生じるということだ。対人的にうまくいかないことから摩擦が生じ、オンラインでの通信のせいや、文化や言語の違いから事態が悪化する。技術的には最適の解決方法でも、中傷や非難が高まるにつれてぼやけてしまう。

One of the challenges of ad-hoc open source development is that, sooner or later, disagreements arise. Personality conflicts generate friction (often exacerbated by the limits of online communication, and cultural or linguistic differences). Optimal technical solutions may be obscured by the rising heat of names called and accusations leveled.

こんな緊張が iPhone のデベロッパ・コミュニティを襲うことになる。どうやら今がそのときのようだ。iPhone Dev Team は、どう見てもハッカーの非公式の集まりで、実力がものをいう世界だ。ところが今や、自らを iPhone “Elite” Team と呼ぶ分裂派から叱責を浴びることとなった。分裂した原因はテクニカルな問題と個人的な問題の両方だ。個人的な理由とは、Zibri と呼ばれるハッカーが IDT irc チャンネルの出入り禁止にされたこと。技術的な理由とは、”Elite” Team の Google Code wiki によれば、iUnlock や AnySIM というロック解除ユーティリティには致命的エラーが含まれていて、そのために iPhone 1.1.1 によるレンガ化（bricking）が起きたというものだ。

This tension was bound to hit the iPhone developer community, and it seems like the time is now. The iPhone Dev Team, by most accounts an informal collection of hackers run pretty much on a meritocracy basis, is now being called on the carpet by a splinter group calling itself the iPhone “Elite” Team. The cause of the split is both technical and personal: personal, a hacker called Zibri was banned from the IDT irc channel; technical, the “Elite” Team is claiming on its Google Code wiki that the iUnlock and AnySIM unlocking utilities contained critical errors that led directly to the 1.1.1-related iPhone bricking problems.

アンロッキングと 1.1.1 firmware が一緒になれば iPhone にとって毒薬となることを我々は知っている。しかし、ハッキングをしたこともなければ、アンロックをしたこともない多くのひとたちが iPhone のレンガ化（iBrickage）の被害をこうむったところをみると、ファームウェアのアップグレード自体にも危険なバグが潜んでいる可能性を排除するわけにはいかなくなった。

We know that the combination of the unlocking utilities and the 1.1.1 firmware has been a poison pill for iPhones; however, with the substantial population of never-hacked, never-unlocked phones that have also suffered iBrickage, we can’t exclude the likelihood that there are some dangerous bugs lurking in the firmware upgrade itself.

時間をかけて iPhone 内部の仕組みを探った頭のいい連中が、お互いに調和と互助の精神で協力してくれるならどんなにいいだろう。しかし現実には、たとえ iPhone のようなクールな世界でも、みんながいつも仲良くすることを望むのは求め過ぎというものだろう。

It would be nice if all the clever folk who have taken the time to explore the iPhone’s inner workings could cooperate in the spirit of harmony and mutual support… but even in a world with something as cool as the iPhone, maybe it’s too much to ask that everyone get along all the time.
