次の iPhone はオーストラリアか

オーストラリア発のウワサだがこれがなかなかおもしろい。

アップル・オーストラリアから漏れた話

2007 年に iPhone が登場して以来、オーストラリアでもその恩恵を味わえるかどうかウワサが絶えない。何度も出るという話や偽情報が出回って、とうとうオーストラリアで売り出されることはないのではないかと考えるひとまででてきた。しかしながら本日アップルは、オーストラリアにおける iPhone 戦略について販売業者に情報を与えたのだ。

Rumours have been rampant for months since the launch of the iPhone in the USA back mid-2007 regarding Australia’s chance to taste the iPhone. There have been many dates and leaks of false info, so much so that some people even think Australia is never going to get it. Today however, Apple have been informing resellers of their iPhone strategy for Australia.

販売業者が聞いた話とはつぎのようなものだ。

・６月最終週に発売される

・複数のキャリアで使える

・特定のキャリアに縛られない

・どの業者でも販売できる

Resellers have been informed of the following things:

  • Last week of June release

  • More than 1 carrier

  • No contract lock in

  • Current resellers will be able to sell iPhones

どれもオイシい話だが、俄に信じ難いものもある。ひとつひとつ精査してみよう。

That’s a lot of juicy info there and might not make sense off hand. Let me break down the significance of this.

６月最終週に発売（Last week of June release）

これはシドニーアップルストア開店や WWDC、iPhone 2.0 ソフト、オーストラリア向けのストック積み増しなどの話とも完全に符合する。

This ties in perfectly with the Sydney Apple store opening, any WWDC announcements, iPhone 2.0 software and time for stock to filter in to the country.

今年の WWDC は６月第１週だ。お待ちかねの 3G iPhone が発表されるかもしれないともいわれる。3G iPhone ということなら、販売業者が聞いた複数キャリアという話にも信憑性が出てきそうだ。オーストラリアの電話会社はすべて 3G ネットワークを持っているからだ。現行の iPhone では Telstra を使ってもデータスピードが増すだけだ。

WWDC is in the first week of June this year, which could be the announcement of the 3G iPhone we’re all waiting for. A 3G iPhone lends credence to the fact resellers have been told the iPhone will be on multiple carriers, as every telco in Australia has a 3G network. The current iPhone will only give high speed data on Telstra.

それまでには iPhone 2.0 ソフトも発表されているだろうから、６月末ということなら新製品のオーストラリア出荷にも十分時間ができるし、2.0 ソフトの新機能を搭載した新 iPhone も発売できることになる。

iPhone 2.0 software will be released then, and a late June release gives it time to be rolled out on new factory models for shipping to Australia, so the iPhone can be sold on the new features v2.0 brings.

また６月末発売ということなら、シドニーやメルボルンで工事中のアップルストアとも符合する。工事は順調なので６月開店に間に合いそうだという。新しい 3G iPhone を発表するのにこれほどピッタリのイベントがあるだろうか。Steve Jobs にとってもオーストラリアに来て、シドニーで休暇を楽しむ価値は十分あると思うけれど・・・

A late June release also ties in well with the Sydney and Melbourne Apple stores currently under construction. It’s well reported that at the progress of the Apple stores, a June opening is likely. What better grandstanding event to launch the store with than a new 3G iPhone? Would be [sic] be worthy of a visit to Australia from Steve Jobs – I’m sure he’d like to have a nice holiday in Sydney too.

販売業者たちは特定の期日を聞かされているという。ただしその日付は、同じ週だがそれぞれ異なった日付だという。もし特定の日付がメディアに漏れれば、誰が漏らしたのかアップルに分かるから、そいつを叩けばいいというわけだ。私に教えてくれた情報筋は友人でもあるので、日付は書かないことにした。海外の場合と違って、アップルが前広に期日を明らかにすることはないだろうし、むしろ「さあ iPhone は今日発売です。どうぞお求めください」というやり方をするのじゃないだろうか。

Resellers have been told specific dates, but they have all been told different dates within the same week. If a specific date is said in the media, then Apple knows who leaks it and can slap them around. As the sources of my info are also my friends, I haven’t included the dates. However, it is fairly certain Apple will not pre-announce the iPhone very far in advance, or at all, with a simple “iPhone is available now, come and buy it!” approach, compared to the dates given overseas to let people prepare.

複数のキャリア（More than 1 carrier）

キャリアが複数というのはショックだ。しかし考えられないわけではない。我が国の電話会社がアップルとの交渉で頑固なほど譲らなかった話は有名だ。iPhone を独占販売してもメリットがあると考えられなかったからだ。「アップルのいうことを聞かないというのなら、欲しいヤツには誰でもやろうじゃないか。ネットワークを独占的にできなくて、お前たちみんなの負けだぞ」とアップルがいったと考えてもおかしくない。

Having multiple carriers is a shock, but not unbelievable. Our telcos have been notoriously stubborn dealing with Apple, not seeing the potential benefits of having exclusivity of the device. It is highly likely Apple simply said “Seeing as you won’t play with us, we’ll give the iPhone to anyone who wants it, meaning you all lose out on exclusivity for your network”.

複数キャリアという話もまた 3G iPhone のウワサに行き着く。オーストラリアで現行の iPhone が使える唯一の高速ネットワークは Telstra 社の EDGE だけだ。オーストラリアで発売するのが iPhone の現行モデルだということなら、Telstra 社だけということになるか、あるいは他の電話会社が GSM から EDGE へアップグレードするように説得しなければならないことになる。（O2 が英国でやったのと同じことだ。）しかし発表されるのが 3G iPhone なら、問題はなくなる。どの電話会社も 3G HSDPA ネットワークを持っているからだ。（周波数は 2100mhz か 850mhz のどちらかだが、携帯の 3G チップセットは両方ともサポートしている。）

More than 1 carrier also leads to the rumours of a 3G iPhone. In Australia, the only high speed network the current iPhone works on is Telstra’s EDGE network. If Apple was to release the current model here in Australia, they would need to be exclusive to Telstra, or persuade another telco to upgrade their GSM network to EDGE to support it (like what O2 is doing in the UK). However, if a 3G iPhone is released, it won’t matter, as all telcos have a 3G HSDPA network (either running on the 2100mhz or 850mhz frequency, both of which are supported by multiple 3G chipsets in mobile devices).

特定のキャリアに縛られない（No contract lock in）

特定のキャリアに縛られないということは複数のキャリアということだ。アメリカや他の国とちがって、iPhone が使えるのを特定のプロバイダに限定する必要がないからだ。多分アップルは、iPhone を特定のプロバイダに縛り付けておく意味がないということを学んだのではないだろうか。どうせみんなロック解除してしまうのだから。それにオーストラリアは携帯電話の利用率が高いので、新技術の実験場（test-bed）として利用しているのだろう。万一失敗してもマーケットが小さいので被害は少なくて済むから・・・

No contract lock-in ties into the idea of multiple carriers, as there’s no need to hold anyone in to a certain provider to use the iPhone, unlike in the USA and other countries. Perhaps Apple have learned that there’s no point holding the iPhone back to a certain provider, as we’re all unlocking them anyway and are using Australia as a test-bed for rolling it out elsewhere due to Australia’s high adoption rate of mobile phones and new technology, but our small market that won’t hurt them if it fails.

どの業者でも iPhone を販売できる（Current resellers will be able to sell iPhones）

アメリカはじめ他の国では、iPhone を買えるのはアップルか、特定のプロバイダの販売店（例えば AT&T ストアなど）だけだ。しかしオーストラリアでは、一般商品と同じくどの販売業者でも iPhone を販売できるようにしようとしている。というのも、電話会社にしろアップルストアにしろ販売店がカバーできる範囲は広くないからだ。販売業者ならその点広い範囲をカバーできる。しかもマックを置いてある店に呼び込むことになるので、みんなはアップル製品も見る。アップル製品を売っているのが彼らだからこそ、まず最初に販売業者に話をしたのだ。さもないと、彼らの助けなしに自ら売る羽目になるからだ。

In the USA and other countries, you can only purchase iPhones from Apple, or from branded stores for the provider (AT&T stores for example). In Australia however, Apple are planning on letting resellers stock and sell iPhones, just like any other product, as the range of telco stores and official Apple stores is low, but resellers are wide-spread – together with driving people into stores where Macs are, so they’ll look at what else Apple does. Also, it’s the reason Apple is telling resellers in the first place, because they’ll be selling them – otherwise Apple would do what they need to do without them.

iPhone について分かっているのは以上だ。これからもっと情報が出てくるだろう。オーストラリアでも遂に iPhone が手に入る。どういうことになるのか、3G の可能性があるのか、みんなで大いに予想してみようじゃないか。

考え方がなかなかおもしろい。

「マーケットが小さいので 3G の実験場として使う」と聞いて思い出したのが Steve Jobs の言葉だ。レコード会社を iTunes ストアに参加させるのに Steve Jobs はつぎのようにいって説得したという。

「我々が完全に間違っていて、その結果マックの音楽マーケットが完全にダメになったとしても、砂場［マック向けのマーケット］はとても小さいから、音楽業界全体が被る被害はたいしたことないじゃないか。」

“If we’re completely wrong and you completely screw up the entire music market for Mac owners, the sandbox is small enough that you really won’t damage the overall music industry very much.”

オーストラリアを実験場にするとは Jobs なら言いかねない。

こうしてみると、オーストラリアが先というのも満更考えられないことではなさそうだ。

いよいよアジアの番だというので、つい日本か中国かと考えてしまい勝ちだが、オーストラリアという可能性がにわかに浮上してきたということかもしれない。

オーストラリアがアジアに入るとアップルが考えているのかどうか興味深いところだが・・・

それにしても早々とアップルに尻尾を巻くか、レベニューシェアリングにあくまで抵抗するか、その先に開ける未来は随分と違ってきそうだ。

［噂］3G iPhone らしき・・・

3G iPhone が出るというウワサが日に日に激しくなっている。とうとう次世代 iPhone の写真と称するものまで登場した。新しい iPhone の背面は、これまでの滑らかなニッケル仕上げから変わって、光沢のある黒い仕上げになっている。

Rumors that Apple’s 3G iPhone is on the way are coming faster by the day, and now images of the alleged next generation iPhone are beginning to surface, too. Apparently the new iPhone will also sport a glossy black back, replacing the satin nickel look found on the current model.

もし PodOberver.com の情報ソースが正しければ、新デザインの iPhone の背面からは、アンテナをカバーしていた黒のプラスチック片もなくなる。 8GB モデルはどうやら存続の模様だ。

If iPodOberver.com’s source is correct, the redesigned iPhone back also drops the black plastic end piece that covers the antenna, and it appears that Apple will continue to offer an 8GB model.

もちろんウワサはウワサに過ぎないから、Steve Jobs が実際にポケットから取り出して見せるまでは分らない。ただこの画像がホンモノなら、光沢のある黒い仕上げは、お偉いさんが隠し持つハイテク製品にはピッタリでないだろうか・・・

Of course, rumors are just rumors until Steve Jobs pulls a new iPhone out of his pocket. If the image proves to be legit, however, the glossy black finish will make a nice addition to the up-and-coming executive’s tech stash.

このウワサについて Mac Rumors は、そもそもリーク写真はほとんどが偽物であり、噂系でもない iPod Observer が取り上げた話なので真偽のほどは分らないが、フォーラムで盛んに議論されているので取り上げたとしている。

There’s something in the air.

アップルサイトもマックワールド一色。ついに例の “There’s something in the air.” がトップページを飾った。

元の意味は「何かが起きそうな気配がする、そんな予感がする」ということだろうが、文字通りに解釈して「空にみなぎっているもの」、「空中にあるもの」が何かを求めて議論が沸騰している。

その中で次のビジネスウィークの記事は特におもしろい。WiMax の可能性にも触れたあと、次のように述べている。

ひょっとしてアップルが UWB［Ultra-Wideband：超広帯域無線］技術を展開する準備ができたということだろうか。

そうだとすると、そのもたらす可能性は非常に興味深い。例えば２台以上のマックがファイル共有をするところを想像して欲しい。それも、１台のマックが他のマックの一定範囲内にくると即座に形成されるワイヤレスネットワークを通じて、だ。もちろん設定許可は Bluetooth の場合と同じで必要だ。インスタントとはいえ、あなたのネットワークにつなぐためには許可が必要だ。でも、どんな話かということは分ってもらえるだろう。ネットワークを通じたファイル共有のためには、多分アップルの Bonjour 技術も使われるだろう。

The potential is very interesting. Imagine sharing files between two or more Macs through a wireless network that creates itself instantly on the fly simply when one Mac is brought within range of another. Of course there would be permission settings involved, just like Bluetooth pairing. You’d have to give another Mac permission to join your own in any instant network and then set the terms of sharing, but you get the idea. Apple’s Bonjour technology for sharing over the network would probably come into play as well.

この UWB については、2005 年の終わりに記事にしたことがある。いよいよ時機到来なのだと思う。

基本的にこれは、ひとつの場所から他の場所へ大量のデータを搬送するのに、ケーブルやコードは要らなくなるという短距離間高速無線技術なのだ。それは例えば、一定の範囲以内にあれば、STB［set top box］とテレビがケーブルで接続されていなくても、HD 品質のビデオをテレビへ伝送することができる。UWB は既に登場し始めており、CES でも Philips や Westinghouse Digital などから「ワイヤレス HDMI」の名前で発表されているのだ。

Essentially it’s a short-range high-speed wireless technology that is intended to replace the cables and cords usually required to convey big batches of data from one place to another. For instance, it’s suitable for pushing a stream of HD-quality video from a set top box to a TV without the need for a cable connection between them, so long as they’re within reasonable range of each other. UWB is already showing up in TVs announced at CES under the name “wireless HDMI from Philips and Westinghouse Digital among others.

Newton タブレットの発表はなし？

The project, however, remains a work-in-progress, according to people familiar with the matter, who attribute its floating timetable to a number of challenges similar to those that threatened to plague iPhone in the months leading up to last year’s expo.

この「Newton デバイス」（Mac タブレットと呼ばれることもある）は、形の上ではアップル風タブレット PC というより、 iPod touch または iPhone を大きくしたものだといわれる。

In its current form, the Newton device — sometimes dubbed a Mac tablet or slate — has been described along the lines of a larger iPod touch or iPhone rather than an Apple adaptation of the modern day tablet PC.

このプロジェクト完成の暁には、アップルのマルチタッチ技術は、iPhone や iPod touch にはまだ取り入れられていない機能やコンセプトを備え、さらに高度化したものになると期待されている。

When the project does come to fruition, it’s expected to leverage a more advanced implementation of Apple’s multi-touch technology, featuring concepts and functionality not yet available on the company’s iPhone and iPod touch handhelds.

その代わり、来週のマックワールドエクスポでは、Mac ノートブックや iTunes のコンテンツ配信、iPhone のアップグレードなどに焦点が絞られるものと考えられる。

Apple is instead expected to use next week’s Macworld Expo to focus on Mac notebooks, iTunes content distribution, and iPhone advancements.

発表の準備が出来ているものとしては、シックな超軽量サブノートブック、iTunes 映画レンタルサービス、iPhone ソフトのアップデートなどだと思われる。

Among the specific announcements believed to be on tap are a chic and ultra-lightweight sub-notebook, a new iTunes movie rental service, and an updated version of the iPhone software.

Silverthorne についても未定

インテルのウルトラモバイルプロセッサ Silverthorne に関して、アップルがなんらかの発表を行なうかどうかは、今の時点でははっきりしない。チップセットがまだ未発表なこと、大量入手が不可能なためだ。

It remains unclear whether Apple will make any announcements related to its planned adoption of the Intel Silverthorne ultra-mobile processor, as that chipset is neither launched nor available in production quantities at this time.

With Macworld Expo just days away, the pre-“Stevenote” buzz is building fast. The rumors about what Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs might unveil in his keynote speech run the gamut from a new movie-rental service for iTunes and Apple TV to a new tablet PC.

アップルがこの新しい年に何をやろうとしているのか、それを知るにはインテルのロードマップが大いに役立つ。インテルこそ 2006 年以来アップルにチップを提供している唯一のサプライヤーだからだ。どうやら見るところ、このチップメーカーは 2008 年の後半には、アップルを未踏の、しかも実入りがいいと思われる領域に導いてくれそうだ。

But when guessing what Apple will do in the coming year, it’s particularly helpful to look at the roadmap of Intel, which has been Apple’s only chip supplier since 2006. And from the looks of things, the chipmaker may help lead Apple into uncharted, possibly lucrative, territory starting in late 2008.

ノートブックに変化が・・・

アップルは小型のノートブックコンピュータを導入すると予測するものが多い。私の考えでも、これは的を得ていると思う。ひとつには、2006 年にアップルが PowerPC チップからインテルのプロセッサに移行したことを除くと、ノートブックのラインナップについてアップルはここしばらく大きな変更を加えていないからだ。サブノートブックというカテゴリーはアップルのラインナップで明らかに欠けているものだ。一番小さい MacBook でも 13.3 インチで、５ポンドも重量がある。

A lot of the speculation has focused on Apple’s apparent plan to introduce a small notebook computer, and I think these rumors are pretty close to the mark. For one thing, beyond switching from PowerPC chips to Intel processors in 2006, Apple hasn’t made any serious revisions to its notebook line in some time. And the most obvious hole in Apple’s computer lineup is in the subnotebook category. Right now, the smallest MacBook sports a 13.3-inch screen and weighs a hefty 5 pounds.

Silverthorne ファミリー

That’s why it’s time for Apple to launch a new product some are calling the MacBook Mini, with a screen of less than 10 inches and weighing no more than 2 pounds. A new family of Intel chips named Silverthorne may go a long way toward helping Apple get there. These chips will be notable for their very small size, relatively beefy computing power, and very low power consumption.

Menlow から Moorestown へ

Silverthorne ファミリーの第一弾は Menlow（コード名）チップで、今年前半、それも６月以前に登場すると考えられている。第二弾は 2008 年後半ないしは 2009 年初頭に登場すると考えられている Moorestown だ。インテルの 32 ナノ技術によって製造される。Menlow よりさらに小さく、より強力で、消費電力もより少ない。これはサブノートブック用の候補というだけでなく、新世代 iPhone の候補にもなるのだ。

The first chip of the Silverthorne family, code-named Menlow, is expected to arrive in the first half of this year, probably before June. A second, known as Moorestown, due in late 2008 or early 2009, will be built on Intel’s 32-nanometer manufacturing process, which means it will be even smaller and more powerful and it will consume even less power than the Menlow. This will make it a contender for use not only in subnotebooks, but in a new generation of iPhone devices.

2008 年は小型ノートブックの年

インテルチップを使用する他のベンダーを見ると、2008 年はサブノートブックの年になるだろうと予測出来る。Asus Eeepc は 350 ドルでスクリーンは７インチ、重さは１ポンドという小型ノートブックだ。インテルの Celeron を搭載し、リナックスで動き、Wi-Fi をサポートする。聞くところでは全世界で４０万台を売り上げたという。富士通にも、5.6 インチでスクリーンが回転する LifeBook U810 がある。重さは１ポンド半、チップはインテルの A110 モバイルチップだ。

There are hints from other vendors using Intel chips that the subnotebook category could be a winner in 2008. Consider the Asus Eeepc, a tiny, $350 notebook with a 7-inch screen that weighs less than a pound and uses an Intel Celeron chip. It runs Linux, supports Wi-Fi, and from what I’m hearing has sold some 400,000 units worldwide. There’s also the tiny LifeBook U810 from Fujitsu that sports a 5.6-inch rotating screen, weighs about a pound and a half, and uses an Intel A110 mobile chip.

x86 命令セットのサポート

小さな Silverthorne は、最上級の Core2 や Core2 Duo ほどの力はないけれど、それでも PC チップが PC チップたる所以の x86 命令セット（x86 instruction set）をサポートしている。これは特に iPhone に関して注目される点だ。現在 iPhone が搭載するチップはインテル製ではなくサムスンのもので、x86 チップではなく英国の ARM Holdings のコアを採用している。

Although the tiny Silverthorne is not as powerful as Intel’s top-of-the-line Core2 or Core2 Duo, it will support the x86 instruction set that makes a PC chip a PC chip. That’s especially noteworthy in terms of the iPhone. Right now, the main chip inside the iPhone comes not from Intel, but from Samsung. And the Samsung chip is not an x86 chip, but one based on a core from Britain’s ARM Holdings.

The possibility of squeezing an x86 chip like Silverthorne inside a future iPhone would make adapting software from a future Mac computer for Apple’s handheld substantially easier. (This assumes that Apple makes good on its promise to make the iPhone software development process easy and open.) Suddenly, the iPhone would be capable of running pretty much any Mac software with few, if any, programming changes.

新しい小型のノートブックには、従来型のハードドライブは搭載されないと思う。その代わりストレージには 32GB のフラッシュメモリーを使うだろう。アップルは SanDisk に次いで NAND フラッシュメモリーの最大の顧客だ。アップルはどのベンダーよりもソリッドステートのストレージを主流にできるいい立場にいる。Samsung や Toshiba、Micron などと長期の供給契約を結んでいることは、フラッシュメモリーのユニークな特徴を生かすソフトを設計しようとする上で大きなインセンティブになる。Dell や Hewlett-Packard のようなウインドウズをベースとするベンダーもこれには従わざるを得ない。

I’d expect the new little notebook to ship without a traditional hard drive, relying instead on at least 32 gigabytes of flash memory for storage. Already the world’s largest consumer of NAND flash memory after SanDisk, Apple is in a better position to popularize solid-state storage in mainstream computing devices than any other vendor. Long-term supply contracts with Samsung, Toshiba, and Micron give Apple plenty of incentive to design software that can take advantage the unique properties of flash memory. Windows-based vendors such as Dell and Hewlett-Packard will have to follow its lead.

マルチタッチスクリーン

ところで、この新しいミニ MacBook は、 iPhone と同じようなタッチスクリーンを採用するだろうか。そうかもしれないが、多分そうはならないだろう。スクリーンサイズを大きくすればコストも大きくなる。小売価格を抑えるために、アップルはマルチタッチスクリーンを見送るだろうと私はみる。

But will this new mini-MacBook also get a touch screen like the iPhone’s? Perhaps, but probably not. The bigger the screen, the more it will cost. I think that means Apple will skip the multitouch screen to keep the retail price manageable.

One More Thing…

MacBook Mini は、多分 Jobs のキーノートの最後の場での「Just One More Thing」として登場するだろう。発表後直ちに発売されるかどうか分らない。Menlow はまだ大量出荷の段階には至っていないと考えられるからだ。ただアップルとインテルのことだからサプライズがあるかもしれない。インテルが昨年出荷したコンピュータチップは２億 1000 万個だが、そのうちの 700 万個はマック用だ。ということはアップルはインテルにとって一番大切な顧客のひとりだということであり、みんなの予想を裏切って変化が起きてもおかしくはないからだ。

The MacBook Mini could conceivably be unveiled as the “Just One More Thing” that appears at the end of every Jobs keynote. It’s doubtful the machine would be available for immediate sale because Menlow isn’t thought to be shipping in volume yet. But Apple and Intel could surprise us. Intel shipped some 210 million PC chips last year, 7 million of which were for Macs, making Apple one of Intel’s most important customers and giving it a reason to move faster than anyone expects.

アップルのドッキングステーションはウルトラスリム MacBook にぴったり

アップルのドッキングステーションに関する特許が明らかになって、大きな話題になっている。

ポンチ絵付きで、こんなの目くらましだというものもいる一方で、Gizmodo がすばらしいフォトショップ画像を起こしていて、これがなかなかのインパクトだ。

このアップルの特許では、スクリーンを備えたドッキングステーションに、側面のスロットから MacBook をスライドして挿入できるようになっている。もちろん現行モデルでは困難だが、マックワールドに登場するというウワサの極軽・極薄の MacBook ならまさに打ってつけだ。

This Apple docking station patent shows a screen base in which you can slide in a MacBook through its side. While this would be difficult to do with current MacBook models, it fits perfectly with the idea of the ultra-light, ultra-slim MacBook that allegedly will be presented at MacWorld.

特許のポイントは、iMac に似たベース本体に必要なポートやコンポーネントと、スロットローディングができるベイを備えているところだ。ちょうどかつての PowerBook Duo と DuoDock ベースステーションみたいな関係だ。DuoDock は水平に置いたが、今回は縦置きのところが異なる。

Basically, the patent shows an iMac-like unit with all the necessary ports and components, with a slot-loading right bay. The system works similarly to the old PowerBook Duo and its DuoDock base station, but vertically instead of horizontally.

ハイエンドのラップトップ/タブレットだって・・・

マックワールドが近づくにつれて、みんなソワソワし出す。

誰も彼もが予想を始める。

ついに、コンピュータとはあまり縁のない Popular Mechanics マガジンまで予想を始める有様だ。

その予想ではハイエンドマシンの「MacBook Plus Tablet Laptop」だそうだ。

ネーミングがいまいちだが、アニメーションまでつける頑張りよう。

１月は、どのエレクトロニクス業界もこの一年の秘密をさらけ出すときだ。だから、土曜日にラスベガスで始まる CES（Consumer Electronics Show）や、その次の週のアップル Macworld では、しこたま発表があるというわけ。どちらもたっぷりライブでカバーする予定。昨年アップルは iPhone を発表してくれた。今年はタブレットマックをラインナップに加えるのではないかとそこら中のウワサだ。今年もアップルの連中に電話して、１５日のキーノートで Jobs が何を発表するのか聞いてみた。連中は、毎年そうだが、今年もなんにも教えてくれなかった。

It’s January, which means time has come for the electronics industry to release all its secrets for the year ahead. That means plenty of announcements at the Consumer Electronics Show beginning Saturday in Las Vegas, and then at Apple’s Macworld the week after that. (We’ll be live at both with video and analysis, so bookmark here and here now.) Last year, Apple upstaged pretty much every other company in the gadget world with the unveiling of the iPhone, and this year, the rumor mill is hot and heavy with speculation about a tablet for the Mac line. As I do every year at this time, I recently called up the folks at Apple and asked them what to expect from Steve Jobs when he takes the stage for his keynote on Jan. 15. And as they do every year, the folks at Apple told me nothing.

So if they won’t tell me what they’re working on, I’ll tell them what I want for the new year. I’ve worked with the Popular Mechanics design team to create the “MacBook Plus” computer of my dreams. It takes Apple’s current technology, interface and design language—from iPhone to the latest Mac laptops—and uses them in a totally new hardware format. I’m guessing it would be pricey at, say, $3000, but that’s only $200 more than the current top-of-the-line MacBook Pro, and I suspect Apple fanboys would cough up that kind of cash for something this slick. To help illustrate just how slick the concept is, we’ve even made the above animation of our hypothetical device. これがウワサのサブノートブック？

マックワールドでの登場がウワサされる新しいサブノートブック（sub-notebook）は Slim MacBook かそれとも MacBook Nano か・・・

サブノートブックのウワサ話を新年最初に伝えたのは Mac Rumors だった。

そのウワサのノートブックを目撃したという情報が現われた。

上の写真は、フォトショップ気違いの作品か、それとも本物か。とまれ、ウワサ系サイトはマックワールドの噂で持ち切りだ。今回のポイントは、マルチタッチトラックパッド。夏に紹介したものだ。１０月登場というのにはだまされたが、でも何にもないよりはまし。またウワサでは、新しいサブノートブックの光学ドライブは外付けになるという。１５日には Matt とぼくがハッキリさせるよ。

The above photo may be the work of a PS junkie or it may just be the real thing. In any case, the rumor mill is abuzz surrounding Macworld. This time around it’s all coming back to the purported multi-touch trackpad we told you about during the summer. Sure our sources duped us by saying it’d be out in October, but it’s better late then [sic] never. There’s also some talk going around about an external optical drive that will accompany the new sub-notebook. Matt and I will get everything sorted out on the 15th.

Think Secret 閉鎖がもたらした波紋

アップルがらみのニュースで、異常なほどメディアの関心を呼んだ出来事がある。

かつてアップル噂系の最高峰だった Think Secret が休刊閉鎖に追い込まれたことだ。一片のプレスリリースだけで、その詳細はよく分らなかった。

一流メディア（AP、Reuters、New York Times、WSJ、BusinessWeek、BBC、Financial Times、Guardian、Baltimore Sun、新華社）から、IT 系メディア（CNET、CNET Japan、ZDNet、InformationWeek、eWeek、Ars Technica、TidBITS、Computerworld、TechCrunch、TechCrunch Japanese）、そしてマック系メディア（MacNN、Macworld、Wired、Cult of Mac、Mac Observer、Engadget、Engadget Japanese、TUAW、MacDailyNews、Mac Rumors）に至るまで、触れなかったメディアを探し出すのが困難なほどだ。

Mr. Ciarelli’s lawyer, Terry Gross, who represented him pro bono, said the motion could have resulted in a financially damaging and embarrassing ruling against Apple, a risk that he said led to this week’s settlement.

Mr. Ciarelli, a social studies major, also writes and edits for The Harvard Crimson, the student newspaper. He was a freshman when Apple sued him and the publishers of two other sites over leaks about unreleased products.

Apple lost the two other suits on appeal after a higher court ruled that the Web site operators were journalists and entitled to First Amendment protections. The court forced Apple to pay $700,000 in legal fees to the sites.

However, some free speech advocates warned that the site’s closing could be viewed as a partial victory for a large company that tried to squelch an independent voice.

CNBC が取り上げたことから、一斉にウルトラポータブルのウワサが広がった。

アジアの製造メーカーにコネのある信頼すべき情報筋が、今朝電話してきていくつかネタをくれた。アップル新製品のホットニュースが、数週間あるいは数か月のうちに大見出しを飾るという。ホットな新製品とは iPod Touch、iPhone それに新しい ultra-portable laptop だ。

A very good source of mine with good connections to Apple’s Asian manufacturing partners called me this morning with some news: Seems like Apple will be making headlines in the next few weeks and months with some of its hottest products: the iPod Touch, the iPhone and a new ultra-portable laptop.

そう書き出した Jim Goldman は、iPod Touch の増産、登場が早まりそうな 3G iPhone に加えて、ウルトラポータブルについて次のようにいう。

それから次はこれだ。情報元の彼がアジアの製造パートナーから聞いたところによれば、来月のサンフランシスコのマックワールドで、アップルは新しいウルトラポータブルのラップトップを発表するという。

１２インチサイズで 1500 ドル

ブログでは盛んにウワサが流れているが、情報ソースによれば、数週間もすればアップル最小のラップトップが登場する確たる証拠を掴んだという。それによれば、このラップトップは１２インチのスクリーンを備え、現行の MacBook Pro より 50% 薄く、ハードドライブの代わりにフラッシュメモリーを内蔵し、小売価格は 1500 ドル程度だという。

The blogs have speculated about this, but he says he now has hard evidence that the smallest laptop ever from Apple is only weeks away. He says the device will feature a 12-inch screen and will be 50 percent thinner–and lighter–than current versions of the MacBook Pro. He says the product will not have a hard-drive, but rely on Flash memory instead and likely retail for around $1,500.

PowerBook が MacBook Pro ラインになったとき、１２インチ PowerBook が姿を消した。

IT 戦士に人気のあった１２インチを惜しむ声は今でも大きいが、その再来ということだろうか。

ウルトラポータブルというのでスワと思ったら、１２インチというのでいささかガッカリ・・・。やっぱりアップルは、フルサイズキーボードを備えたものしか念頭にないのか。

軽量小型のマックのカテゴリーについてはいろんな呼び名があって、そのイメージが微妙にぶれているような気がする。

現行の MacBook/MacBook Pro ラインより小さなものがサブノートブック（subnotebook）というのは分かるが、ウルトラポータブル（ultra-portable）とか UMPC（ultra mobile PC）となると、みんなはどんなものをイメージしているのだろうか。

例えば、つぎのような機種はどのカテゴリーに属するのだろうか。

・Sony VAIO model C1

・OLPC

・Asus Eee PC

・工人舎 SH-series

・HTC Omni [mockup]

これらのカテゴリーの共通点として、小さいながらもキーボードを備え、スクリーンが蓋になっているというフォームファクター（形状、form factor）がある。

マックの世界では、MacBook より小さいマックが存在しないことから呼び名もまちまちだが、PC の世界だと統一的な名称があるのだろうか。

さらにマックの世界では、iPhone/iPod touch が登場したことから話がややっこしくなった。

iPhone/iPod touch をより大きくした形状のデバイス（最早マックとは呼べない？）の可能性が出てきたからだ。

ハンドヘルド（携帯型、handheld）やタブレット（tablet）と呼ばれることが多く、むき出しのスクリーンというフォームファクターが共通のように思える。

たとえば、OQO Model 02 など。想像上の MacBook touch もこの線だ。

Apple-Style アンケート［vol.4］をみると、UMPC（42%）が圧倒的人気で、タブレット（11%）と大きな差がついている。

投票された方の UMPC やタブレットのイメージはどんなものだったのだろうか。

筆者がどうしても欲しいのは、いつでもどこでもインターネットにアクセスできるウェブ端末だ。フォームファクターとしては、iPhone/iPod touch をより大きくしたタブレットに限りなく近いもの。

アンケート結果からみると、そんな希望は例外的なものにみえるけれど・・・
