iPhone ハックツール「Pwnage」の OS X 版がついに公開された。

その同じ日に、Erica Sadun が iPhone Dev Team とのライブ中継を試みている。

これがなかなかおもしろい。

ハッカーとの実際のやり取りについて窺わせてくれるだけでなく、ハッカーとの距離の置き方、ハッカーという存在の受容などに関して彼我の相違を考えさせてくれるからだ。

エリカ：Ipsw バンドルというのはファームウェアをアップグレードする際にダウンロードするヤツのことね？

Pwnage Tool で出来ること

エリカ： pytey、「ipwning」ツールでどんなことが出来るか教えて。boot neutering（中性化ブート）や ipsw installation については話したけれど、あとどんなことが出来るの？

pytey：エリカ、このプラットフォームのためにカネを出すと Kleiner Perkins のヤツがいってたことさ。iPhone は新しい C64［Commodore C64］なんだ。このデバイスをいじればデベロッパのやりたいことは何でもできる。無限の可能性だ。

再度 Pwnage Tool について

エリカ：Pwnage Tool の動作のもっと一般的な話をして・・・

NerveGas：エリカ、iPwner の基本的役割は integrity check［整合性チェック、変更チェック、指紋照合］を無視するようにデバイスを変更することだ。それで無署名のファームウェアをインストールできるようになる。

NerveGas：無署名のパッケージとは基本的には iTunes からダウンロードするアップルのファームウェアアップデートのこと。あといくつかの追加のツール。例えば installer app、boot neuter app、そのほかやってみたいどんな改造でも・・・

こんなやりとりが１時間半にわたって続く。

紳士的［エリカは淑女的？］やり取りであることがまず印象的だ。

ハッカー側にもふんぞり返ったところが全然ない。専門用語で相手を煙に巻こうともせず、相手の質問に一生懸命答えようという姿勢が見える。

対するエリカも練達のプログラマーに教えを乞うという感じ。

エリカが探ってくるハッカー情報の背景にはこんなやり取りがあるということだろう。ライブ中継に彼らが参加するだけの信頼を勝ち取ったということはスゴいことだ。

この背景には、ハッカー文化の受容に関する彼我の差があるのかもしれない。

なお、ロシア語や時差について言及していることから、pytey はロシア人ではないかという感じを受ける。

そういえば、Pwnage のデモビデオの冒頭につぎのような画像が出てくる。［YouTube ビデオおよびこちら参照］

なぜロシアでのデモなのか不思議に思ったものだが、iPhone Dev Team はロシア人を含むインターナショナルな存在なのかもしれない。

とまれ、ハッカーとアップルのせめぎ合いは新しい局面を迎えたような気がする。

iPhone/iPod touch というデバイスについて、自分が認めるやり方でなければ使わせないというアップルと、デバイスが潜在的に持つ可能性を解き放とうとするハッカー/プログラマーの間のせめぎ合いだ。

iPhone SDK とも絡み合って今後どういう展開を遂げるのか目が離せない。

iPod Touch の先にあるもの

いまや iPod ラインの主力商品となった iPod Touch からすばらしい製品が生まれようとしている。iPod Touch はその先駆けだと、ビジネスウィークが書いている。

コンピュータ vs 家電製品

iPhone の発表以来、アップルは新しい道を踏み出した。マックだけでなく、ポケットに入れて持ち運べるデバイス上でも動く OS X の新しいバーションを開発したことによって、これまで我々が「コンピュータ」と呼んだものと「家電製品」のデバイスと呼んできたものとの間の区別がはっきりしなくなっている。

Since it first unveiled the iPhone more than a year ago, Apple has been heading down a new path. Having developed a version of the OS X operating system that runs not only on a Macintosh but also on a device that fits in your pocket, Apple has blurred the distinction between what we know of as a “computer” and what we think of as a “consumer electronics” device.

iPod Touch

その一番いい例は、かつてこの欄でも触れたことがあるが、つい見過ごされ勝ちな iPod の親戚、すなわち iPod Touch だ。外見上は iPhone から電話機能を省いたものにしか見えない。電話回線にもインターネットにも接続できず、オンラインにするためには Wi-Fi に頼らざるを得ない。音楽やビデオを再生できるほか、Ｅメール、YouTube ビデオ、株式情報、天気予報なども探してこれる。グーグルマップを使ってＡ地点からＢ地点へナビとして使うこともできる。

The best evidence of this point, which I’ve argued before in this space, is the iPhone’s overlooked cousin, the iPod Touch (BusinessWeek.com, 1/11/07). On its face the Touch may seem to be little more than an iPhone without the phone features. It can’t connect to cellular networks for calls or Internet access, relying instead on Wi-Fi to go online. Aside from playing music and video, it can fetch e-mail, clips from YouTube, stock quotes, and weather forecasts. It can also help you navigate from point A to point B via Google Maps.

モバイル Wi-Fi プラットフォーム

アップルの COO Tim Cook が、２月２７日の Goldman Sachs のカンファレンスで Touch のことを「モバイル Wi-Fi プラットフォーム」（mobile Wi-Fi platform）と呼んだことは注目に値する。アップルの他の重役連と話してみても、今や Touch は iPod ファミリーの主力製品だといっている。Nano でも Shuffle でもなく Touch なのだ。（iPhone はそれ自体独立のカテゴリーの別製品だ。）

Notably, Apple Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook has taken to publicly describing the Touch as a “mobile Wi-Fi platform,” as he did in remarks at a Goldman Sachs conference on Feb. 27. And in conversations with other Apple executives, I’ve been told that the Touch can now be considered the flagship product of the iPod family (not counting the iPhone, which remains a product category unto itself). Not the Nano. Not the Shuffle. The Touch.

Ｅブックリーダー

Touch に対するこうした新しい考え方は、Touch がいろいろなものに分化していく可能性を示唆している。iPhone や iPod Touch のスクリーンでウェブサイトの記事やＥメールが読めるということなら、書籍や雑誌を読むのにだって適しているといえないか。すべては iTunes Store にコンテンツを供給する側の意思に懸っている。iTunes Store はすべてのデジタルメディア配信の中心たり得るのだ。レコード店、ビデオショップ、本屋、ニューススタンド、それらを全部兼ね備えたものに・・・

This emerging realization about the Touch has multiple possible ramifications. If the screens on the iPhone and the iPod Touch are suitable for reading Web site content and e-mail, why shouldn’t they be suitable for reading books and magazines? All that’s needed are willing content suppliers for the iTunes Store, which could become a central distribution point for all kinds of digital media—a record store, a video shop, a bookstore, and a newsstand all at once.

デジタル出版物

ニューヨークタイムズの John Markoff を初めとして、論理的に考えれば次に出るのはアマゾンの Kindle に類似したアップルリーダー（Apple reader）になるという。当たっている点もあると思う。つまるところアマゾンだって今や音楽ビジネスに関わっているのだ。コピープロテクションフリーの MP3 ダウンロードという点で iTunes と完全に競合している。アップルは今やエンターテインメントの殆どの分野を扱っている。音楽、テレビ番組、映画、オーディオブック、それに間もなく iPhone および iPod Touch のソフト販売も開始する。デジタル出版物がつぎに来ると考えるのは理にかなっている。

John Markoff of The New York Times and others have mused that a next logical step might be an Apple reader akin to Amazon.com’s Kindle (BusinessWeek.com, 11/19/07). I think they may be at least partially right. After all, Amazon.com is now in the music business, selling unprotected MP3 downloads in direct competition with iTunes. Now that Apple offers most major types of entertainment media on iTunes—music, TV shows, movies, audio books—and will soon be in the business of selling applications for the iPhone and iPod Touch, it stands to reason digitized print media could be next.

スクリーンサイズ

デジタル出版物も加わるということになれば、Touch の（そして iPhone についても）スクリーンサイズが問題となる。Kindle のスクリーンサイズは６インチで、iPod Touch の２倍近くある。Touch と Kindle 双方を使ってみた経験からすると、５分以上文字を読むのには大きいスクリーンが望ましいといわざるを得ない。

But once print media becomes part of the equation, the size of the screen on the Touch, and for that matter the iPhone, becomes an issue. The screen on the Kindle measures 6 inches diagonally, nearly twice that of the iPod Touch. Having used both the Touch and the Kindle, I have to say that the larger screen is preferable for reading anything that takes longer than five minutes.

読書のためだけ？

そんな製品をもしアップルが準備中なら、読書のためだけというのでは夢がなさすぎると思う。iPod Touch が本当にこれから出る新しいデバイスファミリーの先駆けだというのなら、スクリーンの大きいその後継機はデジタル出版物を読む以上のことが出来る必要がある。

Yet even if Apple does actually have one in the pipeline, I’d say that a reading device alone would be thinking too small. If the iPod Touch is indeed the vanguard of a new family of media devices, any larger-screened descendant would have to do much more than simply add the ability to read digital versions of the printed page.

仕事もこなせる「何か」

iPod Touch バージョンの OS X がアップルのいうように強力なものだとしたら、いずれ出てくる「アップルリーダー」はエンターテインメントのプラットフォームであるに止まらず、仕事もこなせる「何か」になり得るのではないか。マックノートブックは Wi-Fi を通じて遠隔地から自宅のマックにあるファイルへアクセスを可能にする「Back to My Mac」機能を持っているが、この機能をアップルリーダーでも使えるようにしたらどうか。そうすれば、自宅のコンピュータに忘れてきたプレゼンテーションのファイルをとってくることもできれば、誰かに教えてやった曲をかけてみることもできるだろう。そんなハンドヘルドに十分な容量のストレージ、たとえば 64GB のフラッシュメモリーを付けてやれば、音楽やビデオライブラリーだけでなくいろんな重要書類も常時持ち運べることになる。

If the iPod Touch version of OS X is truly as powerful as Apple says it is, shouldn’t this prospective reader serve as more than an entertainment platform, as something that can help you get things done? Why not adapt Apple’s “Back to My Mac” feature, which lets you gain access to files on your home Mac remotely from a Mac notebook, to let you do the same via Wi-Fi from your Apple reader? You’d be able to grab that presentation you forgot on your home computer, or play that song you were just telling someone about. Give that handheld sufficient storage, say 64GB of flash memory, and you just might go to the trouble of carrying all sorts of important documents around, not just your music and video library.

ポータブルミニコンピュータ

書類を表示できるだけではない。スクリーン上でそれらを編集して手を加えたいと思うかもしれない。そうなればこれはポータブルミニコンピュータ（portable minicomputer）だ。キーボードはどうする？　バーチャルの Qwerty キーボードをマルチタッチスクリーンで使えばいい。iPhone や Touch のものより少し大きめで、二本指でのタイピングが可能なもの。Bluetooth のワイヤレス接続にすれば（iPhone では可能だが Touch にはない）、普通のワイヤレスキーボードという選択肢も加わる。

And why stop at simply displaying documents? You’d want to edit them right there on the screen. That would make it a portable minicomputer. So where’s the keyboard? Right on the screen. Put that multitouch screen to work displaying a virtual Qwerty keyboard, only bigger than that found on the iPhone and the Touch, and suitable for two-fingered hunt-and-peck typing. Add a Bluetooth wireless connection—which the iPhone has, but the Touch lacks—and you’d also have the option of using a conventional wireless keyboard.

Gizmo Project

Skype でインターネット電話をするのに Bluetooth ワイヤレスヘッドホンは便利だが、Gizmo Project のクライアントもいずれそうなる。ソニーの Wi-Fi メッセージングデバイスである Mylo ではすでに Skype が利用できるし、Cisco Systems や Netgear の Wi-Fi ハンドセットにも内蔵されている。SIPphone の Gizmo Project 通話ソフトがノキアのウェブタブレットで利用できるようになって久しい。

Bluetooth would also come in handy for a wireless headset to make Internet phone calls on the Skype and Gizmo Project clients that would inevitably follow. Skype is already available on Sony’s Mylo, a Wi-Fi messaging device, and has been embedded in a series of Wi-Fi handsets from Cisco Systems and Netgear. And SIPphone’s Gizmo Project calling software has been available on Nokia’s Web tablets for some time.

Atom 効果

このワイヤレスのマイクロマック（micro-Mac）には本格的マックノートブックほどのパワーはないが、それでもそこらのハンドヘルドよりは多くのことがこなせるなかなか強力なデバイスだ。このところインテルはノートブック PC とスマートフォンの中間に位置する新しいタイプのデバイスをプッシュしているが、それは低消費電力の Atom チップを備え、新しいカテゴリーの創出が期待されているものだ。2006 年当時初めてこの話を聞いたときはピンとこなかったが、当時はアップルのようなクリエイティブな会社（いまやインテルの花形顧客だ）がなにをやらかすかということに思いが至っていなかった。

This wireless micro-Mac wouldn’t have the processing power of a full-fledged Mac notebook, but it could serve as a pretty robust dinghy that would do plenty more than most handhelds. Intel, which has been talking about a new class of devices that lie somewhere between notebook PCs and smartphones, has a new low-power chip called the Atom that it hopes will drive the creation of this new category. I’ll admit I’ve been skeptical of the idea since it was first floated in 2006. But I hadn’t been thinking of what a company as innovative as Apple, now Intel’s marquee customer, might do with this idea.

すばらしい方向に向けた第一歩

iPod Touch から何が出てくるか、それをあれこれ推測することはこれから数か月の間の楽しみだ。アップルが出すシグナルから分ることは、アップルがすばらしい方向に足を踏み出したということだ。

The conjecture and speculation about what devices the iPod Touch may spawn will certainly be interesting to watch in the coming months. Given the signals it’s sending, Apple is just starting down what looks to be a fascinating path.

「カボチャ畑ニュースサービス」［pumpkin patch news service：カボチャ畑 pumpkin patch、修正パッチ、ハッカーの Pumpkin をひっかけた「ハッカーニュース」の意か？］からこんどは何が飛び出すだろうか。ここにひとつのビデオがある。事前に牢破りした iPhone を、ハッカーが iTunes を使って 1.1.4 にアップデートするビデオだ。iPhone ソフトのセット（ipsw ファイル）は事前にハックされていて、iTunes によってアップデートされるのは完全にハックされたシステムだ。

Guess what’s come out of the pumpkin patch news service this time? A video that shows hackers using iTunes to restore an already-jailbroken and activated 1.1.4. The iPhone software bundle (the ipsw file) has been pre-hacked and updates through iTunes to a fully hacked system.

ほかのハック同様、これもまだ完成の域には達していない。proof-of-concept［コンセプトを実証するためのもの、実証コード］の例としてハッカーがデモしたものだ。実際に SDK が出たら、彼らはこの方法を公開することになるだろう。

Like other hack previews, this one is not yet ready for prime-time. The developers put this together as a proof-of-concept, but hey’ll [sic] likely be releasing this method when the actual SDK comes out.

プレステのゲームが iPhone/iPod touch で動く？

PlayStation ソフトのエミュレータが開発中らしい。

Connectix のエミュレーションソフト

初代のソニー PlayStation が登場したのはさほど昔のことではないが、その後の後継機をみると大昔のように感じてしまう。私自身は一度も PlayStation を買ったことはないが、それでも OS X 時代より遥かな昔、Connectix の Virtual Game Station（VGS）を使ってマック上で Grand Turismo を楽しんだことがある。VGS は大変よく出来たソフトで、誰でも PlayStation のゲームを、そこらのごく普通のハード上で、特段パフォーマンスが落ちることもなく走らせることができた。もちろんソニーが気に入るわけはない。ソニーは Connectix に対し訴訟を起こそうとしたが、結局はソフトを買い上げ、直後にその開発をツブしてしまったものだ。

The original Sony Playstation debut wasn’t all that long ago, although technologically, its successors make it seem like the ancient past. I never did own one, but that didn’t stop me from playing a bit of Grand Turismo on my Mac using Connectix’s Virtual Game Station back in those pre-OS X days. It was pretty sweet; the software allowed any user to run Playstation games with no real performance hits on relatively run-of-the-mill hardware. This, of course, didn’t please Sony. The company tried to sue Connectix, but in the end, it just ended up buying up the software, then promptly killed all development.

psx4all が iPhone/iPod touch 向けに開発

最近ではソニーは、初代のゲームをエミュレートしてゲーム市場に進出することに、以前ほど激しくは抵抗しないようだ。今ではたくさんの PlayStation のエミュレータが手に入るようになった。最も新しいものとしては、iPhone/iPod touch 向けに psx4all が開発しているエミュレータがある。まだ市販するには至っていないが、ベータ段階に近づいている。デベロッパの話では、完成の暁には PlayStation のゲームの約 75% が動くだろうという。それにしても最適化しなければならないコードがまだたくさん残っているらしい。

These days, Sony is a little less rabid about people emulating its original foray into the gaming market and many Playstation emulators have since become available. The most recent emulator to grace the scene is from psx4all and it is for the iPhone/iPod Touch. While not yet ready for public consumption, the emulator is approaching the beta stage. The developer estimates that 75 percent of Playstation games will be compatible by the time he is done, but he still has a lot of code optimization to do.

コントローラが問題

現段階のスクリーンショットを見る限り、コントロールがいささか変だ。しかし、少なくとも６つのボタンと方向舵、アナログスティックなどがついたコントローラの使用を前提としたゲームを、たったひとつのボタンとタッチスクリーンしかないデバイスに移植しようというのだから贅沢はいえない。コントローラのエミュレーションは、１６ビット以前のコンソールの方がうまくいくのかもしれない。まあ、実用的かどうかより、クールに見えるか、実際に可能だと証明できるか（proof-of-concept）ということの方が大切なときだってあるのだから・・・

If early screenshots are any indication, the controls will be awkward at best. But what else can one expect from attempting to play games meant for a controller with at least six buttons, a directional pad, and at least one analog stick on a device with one button and a touch screen? The earlier consoles probably lend to a better emulation controller scheme than console technology greater than 16-bit, but sometimes it isn’t about practicality; its about cool factor and proof-of-concept.

iPhone/iPod touch で PlayStation のゲームがやれるとなったら、これは朗報だろう。

確かにボタンひとつじゃうまくいかないかもしれないが、外付けのコントローラを付けたらどうなるか・・・

越えるべきハードルは大きいだろうが、iPhone/iPod touch ユーザーにはうれしい話だ。ソニーにとっては頭のいたいことだろうが・・・

アップルタブレットがやって来る！

現実とのギャップ

新しいスタイルを決め、プラットフォームを造り出すのがアップルのいつものやり方だ。来月書く予定の 2008 年予測コラムの先回りになるが、アップルの現在のプロダクトラインからヒントを得ることにしよう。もし現実との間に明らかなギャップがあれば（実際にあるのだが）、そこが埋めるべき製品ということになる。それもなるべく早く・・・

Apple is used to setting styles and inventing platforms, but at the risk of undercutting next month’s 2008 predictions column, let’s first look at where the product line could use some help. If there are obvious gaps (there are) then they probably need filling, and soon.

１）Mac Pro タワーのための新しいフォームファクター。

２）もっと上質の LCD ディスプレイ。アップルのディスプレイは大画面だが高価だ。スペックを見ても最早競合他社より上質とはいえず、ほとんど同程度だ。 HDMI 端子や内蔵 iSight カメラはいったいどうなったのか。

３）Blu-ray ないしは HD 光学式ストレージはどうなったのか。何年も前からの約束ではないか。

４）H.264 ハードウェアの実装。

５）黒ないしはダークグレーの MacBook Pro。

６）AT&T がリークした 3G iPhone も忘れてはいけない。

1) A new form factor for the Mac Pro towers.

2) Better LCD displays. Apple’s are big but expensive and the specs are no longer better than the competition — or even close. Where are the HDMI ports and the built-in iSight cameras?

3) Blu-ray or, for that matter ANY HD optical storage. This was promised years ago.

4) H.264 hardware support.

5) Black or dark gray MacBook Pros.

6) And of course the now-leaked-by-AT&T 3G iPhone.

WebKit がカギ

アップルからは出ないだろうと信ずる製品がひとつだけある。iPhone 用の Flash メディアプレーヤのプラグインだ。かつて出すと約束したことがあるが、アップル WebKit の持つ戦略的重要性を考えると、どの程度本気だったか分からない。戦略的重要性とは、Safari ブラウザの基礎をなすのが WebKit であり、マックやウインドウズだけでなく今や iPhone や iPod Touch でも使われることになったという点だ。

One product I believe WON’T be coming soon from Apple is a Flash plug-in for the iPhone. Though this was at one time promised, it is hard to say how real that promise ever was because of the strategic importance of Apple’s WebKit — the basis of the Safari browser on Mac, Windows, and now the iPhone and iPod Touch.

WebKit とはオープンソースのウェブブラウザエンジンだ。それ自体はウェブブラウザではないが、ブラウザを作ろうとすればどうしても必要となるすべてのパーツことだ。コンピュータと電話の中間的存在である iPhone や iPod Touch をアップルがどう考えるかという点で WebKit はカギとなる。そして将来のアップルのモバイル戦略を決定するという意味でもカギとなる。

WebKit, an open source web browser engine (not a web browser in its own right but all the parts you’d need to build a web browser), is key to Apple’s vision for devices like the iPhone and the iPod Touch that live somewhere between computers and phones and define where Apple is headed with its mobile strategy.

Acid2 をパスするのは KHTML だけ

WebKit についてはあまり語られることがないが、大きな成功を収めていることを考えるとこれは驚きだ。グーグルのスマートフォンプラットフォームである Open Handset Alliance Android は、ウェブのレンダリングエンジンとして WebKit を使っている。またオープンソースの KDE および GTK+ プロジェクトは両方とも WebKit のベースとなっている KHTML を使っている。

Not much is said about WebKit and this is a surprise to me since it is such a big hit. Google’s Open Handset Alliance Android smartphone software platform uses WebKit as its web rendering engine, and the open source KDE and GTK+ projects both use KHTML, on which WebKit was based.

アップルに対して WebKit が持つ意味は、すべてのウェブ端末（Internet-enabled devices）上でウェブページをレンダリングするオープンソース規格を決めるという点だ。これはまた、なぜアップルが Safari に Gecko やアップル自身のウェブエンジンを採用せず、代わりに KHTM を使ったかということを説明してくれる。Internet Explorer に最適化されたウェブページを KHTML がレンダリングするとひどいものになるにも拘らずだ・・・。ウェブレンダリングの Acid2 テストをパスできるレンダリングエンジンは KHTML が唯一のものだ。出来の悪いウェブページを正しくレンダリングすることより、オープンソースのスタンダードに従うことの方が、アップルにとってはより重要だったのだ。

The point of WebKit for Apple was to define an open source standard for rendering web pages on all sorts of Internet-enabled devices. This also explains why Apple used KHTML instead of Gecko or its own web engine for Safari — even though KHTML was terrible at rendering web pages that were optimized for Internet Explorer. KHTML is the only rendering engine that can pass the Acid2 web-rendering test, and following a standard was more important to Apple than correctly rendering poorly written web pages.

自らの運命は自ら切り開く

そこで Flash に話を戻すと、iPhone にはプラグイン用の Flash プレーヤが欠けている。これこそが、まだサードパーティ製 iPhone アプリがない最大の理由だ。もしアップルが Flash プレーヤを許せば、iPhone ウェブアプリの開発環境において Flash が支配的になってしまうというリスクを冒すことになる。アップルにとっては Ajax の方が好ましいのだ。

Which brings us back to the lack of a Flash player or plug-in for the iPhone, which is the single greatest reason why we do not yet see true third-party iPhone applications. Had Apple allowed a Flash player on the iPhone, it risked having Flash — rather than the Apple-preferred Ajax — become the dominant iPhone web application development environment.

アップルはウェブ端末（Internet-enabled consumer appliances）にこそアップルの未来があると見ている。アップルにとってネットワーク端末というコンセプトは、三たび、四たびと蘇る。今回は、持ち運び（mobility）とメディア（media）という味付けが加わって、やっとちゃんとしたものになったのだ。然るに、アップルのプラットフォームが第三者の祝福を受けて初めて成立するというのであれば、この戦略自体が成り立ち得ないのだ。昨今みんなの考えるオプションといえば、マイクロソフト（.NET および Silverlight）やサン（Java）、アドビー（Flash）などを取り込むことだ。しかしアップルにしてみれば、競争相手を潰すのにジグザグと手間がかかっても、自らの運命は自ら切り開きたいのだ。だからこそ WebKit なのだ。みんなが話題にしないこと自体がアップルにとっては上出来というわけ・・・

Apple sees much of its future in Internet-enabled consumer appliances. It’s the third or fourth rebirth of the whole Network Appliance concept, only this time mobility and media are added and the mix may finally be right. But this strategy won’t work as well if Apple has to depend on a third party to bless its platform. These days the options are to embrace Microsoft (.NET and Silverlight), Sun (Java), or Adobe (Flash), but Apple wants to control its own destiny, zigging and zagging as it likes to crush competitors, hence WebKit. It’s a huge success for Apple that people just aren’t talking about.

Flash プレーヤやプラグインは登場しないといっている訳ではない。ただアップルは、 WebKit/iPhone/iPod Touch プラットフォームがそれ自体自立し安泰になるまでは、決してその登場を許さないだろう。

I’m not saying that a Flash player or plug-in won’t eventually appear, but Apple won’t allow it to happen until Cupertino feels the WebKit/iPhone/iPod Touch platform is established well enough to stand on its own.

The next logical WebKit product for Apple, it seems to me, is a much larger version of the iPod Touch. It would be Apple’s first tablet computer and, while they’ll still claim it runs OS X, Apple WON’T call it a Mac.

1) Because MacWorld in January is when Apple stuns the world with improvements and innovations. A well-designed tablet could be a great innovation. An SDK for February 2008, not for just iPhone but for multi-touch devices in general, including a newly available iTablet– that would be stunning.

特許で保護されたインターフェイス

２）マルチタッチのタブレットは、通信とコンピュータが複合したこの新しい製品に、特許で保護されたインターフェイスを提供することになるからだ。マイクロソフトやそのパートナーたちはクローン製品を出さざるを得なくなる。問題はマックかそれとも PC かということになるが、デザインの洗練されたマックタブレットに敵う PC 製品はないから、iTablet の方が勝るということになり、問題はいつ入手できるかということになるのだ。

2) Because a multi-touch tablet would provide a patent-protected interface for a new class of communication and computer device that Microsoft and its hardware partners would be hard-pressed to clone. The question now is does one get a Mac or a PC? There would be no PC analog to a well-designed Mac tablet, so if an iTablet is compelling, the question then becomes more like, when can I get one?

３）カッコいいフォームファクター（form-factor）のタブレットは、ビデオ視聴エコシステム（video-viewing ecosystem）への重要な追加となるからだ。アップルが音楽で成功したのはデザイン的に洗練された音楽プレーヤだけがその理由ではない。iPod が iTunes とうまく機能すること、携帯デバイスに CD コレクションを取り込み、再生するのが非常に容易であることもその理由なのだ。すてきな iTablet もビデオを見るのに適しているかもしれない。Handbrake 風の DVD リッピング（DVD ripping ala Handbrake）をアップルが搭載するかどうかはまだ明らかではない。もしそうすれば（CD の場合と同じように、すでに所有しているものはコピー出来るはずだという法律的考え方をすればだが）、ビデオエコシステムはさらに一歩を進めることになる。そこにビデオのストーレッジオプションを加える。ローカルディスクに、ホームネットワークに、そして「クラウド」に・・・。それに HD オプションの可能性をパラパラと振りかけ、それを全部ミックスして iPod や iPhone でビデオが見れるようにする、マックや PC でも、 Apple TV 経由で大スクリーンでも、さらにはカッコいいポータブルの iTablet でも・・・。そうなれば、Disney 以外の主だった映画会社が、押し合いへし合い、わめき合い、揉み手をして、歯を食いしばり、ビデオライブラリを提供したいという図になるだろう。

3) Because a nice form-factor tablet could be a significant addition to a video-viewing ecosystem. Apple’s success in music is not just about well-designed music players, but the way iPods work with iTunes, and the fact that people could easily move their CD collections over and play them on these new portable devices. A nice iTablet could be great for viewing videos. It’s not clear that Apple can build in DVD ripping ala Handbrake, but if they did (on the legal grounds that people can make a copy of what they already own, like a CD), then that would be another significant video ecosystem factor. Add good video-storage options on local disks, home networks, and “the cloud,” sprinkle in the option for HD viewing, and then mix all that with being able to view videos on iPods and iPhones, Macs and PCs, big screens via Apple TV, and then sleek, portable iTablets… Well, then we’ll watch the major studios start to provide their video libraries, all but Disney kicking, screaming, wringing hands, and gnashing teeth.

４）カメラを内蔵した iTablet は、ポータブルビデオ通信を可能にするパワーと回線を持つからだ。アップルはビデオ通信についても基礎を構築しつつあると私は信ずる。

4) Because an iTablet with a camera built in could potentially have the power and bandwidth to enable portable video communication. Video communication is another ecosystem for which I believe Apple is laying the groundwork.

Ｅブックリーダーの可能性

５）iTablet はＥブックリーダー（e-book reader）としても利用可能だ。それが主な理由というわけではないけれど、なかなかいい機能だ。本を読み、映画を見る。そしてアマゾンの Kindle が炎上するの見る。

5) The fact that an iTablet could be a great e-book reader, too, is not a driving reason for such a device, I don’t believe. But it’s a nice capability. Read the book and watch the movie. Then watch Amazon’s new Kindle go up in flames.

ギャフンといわせられる

iTablet が登場する第６の理由を考えてみたい。というのも、先週 AT&T が 3G iPhone を発表するという栄誉をアップルから奪ってしまったからだ。Jobs には、何かもっとすごいものが必要なのだ。

To this I might add a sixth reason for an iTablet intro, which is because AT&T last week stole the thunder from an Apple 3G iPhone announcement. Jobs sorely needs something even better to announce.

はっきりいって、５つ目の理由を読むまで、必ずしも十分納得できたわけではなかった。Kindle を潰し、アマゾンの Jeff Bezos をギャフンといわせる・・・。これこそ Jobs とアップルにとって意味があることなのだ。

Frankly, I wasn’t fully convinced until reaching point five. Killing the Kindle and deflating Amazon.com’s Jeff Bezos — now that’s something worthy of Jobs and Apple.

サードパーティソフトに関する Steve Jobs の公開書簡

１０月１７日、ついにアップルは、iPhone についてサードパーティのネイティブソフト開発を認め、そのために開発キット SDK を出すことを Steve Jobs の公開書簡の形で明らかにした。

ちょっといわせて欲しい。我々だって iPhone で動くネイティブなサードパーティのアプリケーションを望んでいる。そのため２月には SDK［Software Development Kit：ソフトウェア開発キット］がデベロッパの手に届くようにするつもりだ。活気溢れるサードパーティの開発者コミュニティが iPhone を中心にでき、何百という新しいアプリケーションがユーザーのために出来ると思うとワクワクする。革新的なマルチタッチ・インターフェイスに加えて、強力なハードウェアと先端を行くソフトウェアというアーキテクチャによって、かつてないすばらしいモバイル・プラットフォームを開発者に提供できたと我々は信じている。

SDK のリリースには２月までかかると思う。なぜなら、全く正反対の二つのこと、すなわちデベロッパに先進的でオープンなプラットフォームを提供するということと同時に、ユーザーをウイルスやマルウェア、プライバシー攻撃などとから守るという二つの異なったことをやらなければならないからだ。これは決して容易なことではない。ウイルスやマルウェアは、携帯電話に関しては問題ないというひともいる。しかしそれはまったく正しくない。すでに他社の携帯電話には深刻なウイルスが存在している。なかには、携帯電話のネットワークを通じて電話から電話へ気付かれないまま伝染していくものもある。電話がますます強力になるにつれて、悪意のプログラムもますます危険なものになる。iPhone は最も進んだ電話であるため、非常に目立つターゲットになる。

It will take until February to release an SDK because we’re trying to do two diametrically opposed things at once—provide an advanced and open platform to developers while at the same time protect iPhone users from viruses, malware, privacy attacks, etc. This is no easy task. Some claim that viruses and malware are not a problem on mobile phones—this is simply not true. There have been serious viruses on other mobile phones already, including some that silently spread from phone to phone over the cell network. As our phones become more powerful, these malicious programs will become more dangerous. And since the iPhone is the most advanced phone ever, it will be a highly visible target.

Some companies are already taking action. Nokia, for example, is not allowing any applications to be loaded onto some of their newest phones unless they have a digital signature that can be traced back to a known developer. While this makes such a phone less than “totally open,” we believe it is a step in the right direction. We are working on an advanced system which will offer developers broad access to natively program the iPhone’s amazing software platform while at the same time protecting users from malicious programs.

数か月我慢すれば、サードバーティのすばらしいアプリケーションが安全かつ確実に iPhone で動く輝かしき未来が開け、報われることになるのだ。

We think a few months of patience now will be rewarded by many years of great third party applications running on safe and reliable iPhones.

iJailbreak の作者は１３才

「jailbreak」（牢破り）とはよくいったものだ。

iPhone/iPod touch にはすばらしい能力が隠されている。なんとかしてその能力を引っ張り出したい。そのためには「牢破り」（jailbreak）しかないというわけだ。

iPhone より難しいといわれた iPod touch の牢破りが成功した。しかも１３才の少年の手によって・・・

iPod touch がハックされた

とうとう OS X ベースのアップルガジェットを牢破りする楽しみは、iPhone の持ち主に限られなくなった。iPod touch に掛かっているロックは iPhone 以上といわれたものだ。iPhone の場合とちがって、iPod touch をクラックしてもアップルとしては AT&T との契約収入を失うわけではないのだからこれは奇妙なことだ。

At long last, iPhone owners are no longer the only ones who get to have any fun with jailbreaking OS X-based Apple gadgets. The iPod touch has proven to be even more locked down than the iPhone, which is surprising since cracking the iPod touch doesn’t mean Apple will lose out on AT&T contract revenues like it does when the iPhone is unlocked.

iJailbreak はもっとやさしい

それはともかく、iPod touch のための「iJailbreak」が公表された。これを使うと iPhone の AppTapp と同じように簡単になるという。（ウェブにはこれまでのやり方も詳細に載っているが、iJailbreak の方がもっと簡単だそうだ。）ユーザーは、iJailbreak を起動し、iPod touch とつなぎ、それから上部にあるロック/電源ボタンを入れて再起動するだけ。あとは全部 iJailbreak がやってくれる。その結果、ホームスクリーンに Installer アプリのアイコンが追加される。これでいつでもサードパーティ製アプリでロックンロールが楽しめるというわけ・・・

Regardless, iJailbreak for the iPod touch has been released, which claims to offer the same ease-of-use that AppTapp does for the iPhone (a previous process was detailed online, but iJailbreak is said to make the process much easier). Users simply need to run iJailbreak, hook up an iPod touch, and restart it using the lock/power button atop the device. iJailbreak handles the rest, eventually placing the Installer.app icon on the iPod touch’s home screen, ready to rock and roll with third-party apps.

これまでのハッキング結果を使う

「AriX」と名乗る１３才のハッカーが、iPod touch のハッキングを自動化するツール iJailBreak を公開した。これまでの二つのハッキング成果を使っている。ひとつは、Niacin と Dre がやった「TIFF」ハック、もうひとつはデスクトップからコマンドラインで iPhone へのアクセスを可能にする「iPhuc」だ。一旦稼働すると、iJailBreak はアップル以外の非公式ソフトを Touch に簡単にインストールするのに使える。iJailBreak は GNU General Public License バージョン２に従っており、Google Code からダウンロードできる。現在のバージョンは v0.2.1、Mac OS X 搭載のインテルマックでしか動かない。パワー PC 版は開発中だという。

A 13-year-old coder going by the alias of “AriX” has released iJailBreak, a tool meant to automate the process of hacking the iPod touch. Two previous pieces of hacking code are used: first is the TIFF exploit developed by “Niacin” and “Dre,” while the second is iPhuc, a program meant to grant command-line access to an iPhone via desktops. Once run, iJailBreak can be used to simplify the installation of unofficial software on a Touch. iJailBreak is covered under v2 of the GNU General Public License, and available for download from Google Code; currently at v0.2.1, the app will only run on Intel Macs with Mac OS X Tiger, but a PowerPC version is said to be in development.

1.1.1 firmware でも問題ないが・・・

Niacin/Dre によるハックは先週公表されたばかりで、iPhone/iPod touch の read/write を可能にするものだった。非常に重要な点は、アップルの v1.1.1 firmware と互換性があるということだ。v1.1.1 firmware はすべてのサードパーティ製ソフト（AT&T 以外の SIM カードを使えるようにしたソフトを含む）を動かないようにしたことで悪名高い。Niacin および Dre によれば、このハッキングはまだ完全なものではなく、もしアップルが今後のアップデートで TIFF の欠陥を修復すれば、ハックはダメになり、ユーザーは手動でリセットしなければならなくなると警告している。

The Niacin/Dre hack was first revealed just last week, and allows read and write access to both iPhones and iPod touches. Critically, it is compatible with Apple’s v1.1.1 firmware, which notoriously disabled all previous third-party code, including software that allowed non-AT&T SIM cards in the iPhone. Niacin and Dre warn that their hack is currently very tenuous; should Apple fix the TIFF flaw in a later update, the hack will be broken, and users will have to manually reset their devices.

ハッキングは一切不要

このやり方は、iPod touch でも、あるいは iPhone のどちらでも使える。だからアップルが 3G iPhone を発売するまで待たなくてもいいというわけ。iPod touch を買って 3G iPhone に変えるだけなので、高額の iPhone 使用契約にカネを払う必要もない。iPod/iPhone ハッキングは一切必要ないことに注目して欲しい！。まったく安全で、愛するアップルデバイスに一切の危険を加える必要もないのだ。

This technique will work with either an iPod Touch or an iPhone, so there’s no more waiting around for Apple to release a 3G iPhone. In fact you don’t even need to fork out for the expensive iPhone contract at all, when you can just buy an iPod Touch and turn it into a 3G iPhone! Note that no hacking of the iPod/iPhone is required at all! So you are perfectly safe to try this without any risk to your lovely Apple device.

殻に閉じ込められた iPod touch

私は最近 iPod touch を買ったが、とても気に入っている。これはすばらしいウェブ用のタブレット（web tablet）だ。オンスクリーン・キーボードもとても使い易く、折角のことならこれが完璧な PDA だったらいいのにと考えるほどだ。ところが実際にやってみるととても簡単なのだ。ただしアップルは、人為的に iPod touch をメディアプレーヤという殻の中に閉じ込めているけれど・・・

I recently purchased the iPod Touch and was very impressed with it. It makes a wonderful web tablet. I found the on screen keyboard entry to be so good that I found myself wishing this was a full PDA. In fact it could easily be so, except that Apple have artificially restricted it to be a media player.

PDA にするためには・・・

早速、ウェブベースのアプリを使って PDA としての機能を試してみようと考えた。そこで Writeboard でいろいろ試してみたが、Safari はなかなか有用でウェブ上で書類の編集が十分できることが分かった。これには興奮した。ただし、いくつか問題があった。

I immediately had the idea of using web based applications to obtain the PDA functionality. So I tested it out on Writeboard, and found that Safari was quite capable of editing my documents on there. This was very exciting, but left a couple of problems:

PDA アプリの問題

１）Writeboard のツールは、iPod で使うにはには（ズームしてもなお）小さすぎて厄介なこと

２）書類へのアクセスは Wi-Fi ネットワークの範囲内でしかできないこと

1) The controls on Writeboard are too small and fiddly for the iPod, even after zooming

2) I could only access my documents whilst in range of a WiFi network.

第１の問題は簡単に片付いた。グーグルで調べてみたら、iPhone 用の PDA アプリがたくさんあり、iPhone/iPod のスクリーンサイズに適したものも見つかった。例えば iPhone WebDocs だ。

Problem 1 was very quickly solved when I googled for iPhone applications, and found that many people have started working on PDA apps more suited to the iPhone/iPod screen. A good example is iPhone WebDocs.

ウインドウズのケータイをつなぎに使う

第２の問題は、ヨーロッパ向け iPhone が発売されるのを待って、その後さらに余分な契約で多額のカネを払うより仕方ないかと思われた。そうなっても、古くて遅い 2G ネットワークしか使えない。これはアップル以外には理解し難い理由だ。しかし、私にはある考えがひらめいた。早速その可能性を調べてみた！

Problem 2 meant waiting for the European iPhone to be released and then spending lots of money on another  contract. Even then it would only be usable via the ancient slow 2G network for some reason unfathomable to anyone except Apple. However I quickly had an idea, and set about investigating the possibility!

私の考えというのはこうだ。3G から Wi-Fi へのつなぎ（bridge）にウインドウズの携帯電話（Windows Mobile phone）を使うのだ。どんなに安くてクズみたいなものでもいいからウインドウズのケータイをまず買う。それをポケットに入れ、超薄 iPod touch で 3G のフルスピードでネットにアクセスするのだ。いろんなコストがかからないことを考えれば、これは iPhone よりずっとお得だ。確かに iPod touch にはマイクがついていないから、音声電話をかけるには通常の電話を使った方がいいだろう。そうすれば、iPod/iPhone を頭に押し付けてバカみたいに見えることもない・・・

My idea was to use a Windows Mobile phone as a bridge from 3G to WiFi. Then you could just buy any cheap rubbish Windows phone, stick it in your pocket, and access the net at full 3G speed from a slimline iPod Touch that’s even better than an iPhone and without all the cost! The iPod Touch doesn’t have a microphone of course, but for voice calls I’d much rather use the normal phone and not look like a total dork by holding an iPod/iPhone to my head 😉

突如フルスピードで・・・

必要なことは、Wi-Fi ブリッジが可能かどうか、どうやればできるかさえ分かればよかった。お気に入りのサイトをいくつか回ってみたところ、なんとラッキーなことに XDA Developers Network によるソリューションがみつかったのだ。セットアップして試すのにほんのちょっとしかかからなかった。・・・そして、私の iPod touch は突如 3.5G HSDPA のフルスピードでネットにアクセス出来るようになったのだ。ウインドウズのケータイをポケットに入れておくだけで・・・。以下あなたにも出来るように、ステップ・バイ・ステップで説明しておいた。

I only needed to find out if the WiFi bridge was possible and how to do it. A quick trawl of my favourite sites, and I was in luck! I came across the solution on the XDA Developers Network. It took me a short while to set this up and test it, and suddenly I had my iPod Touch accessing the net at full 3.5G HSDPA speed via the Windows phone in my pocket! Below is my step-by-step guide on how you can do it too.

不協和音が聞こえ始めた iPhone Dev Team

破竹の勢いで iPhone ハックに取り組んできた iPhone Dev Team だが、どうやら内部分裂が始まったらしい。

臨時にチームを組んだオープンソースのデベロッパたちが遭遇するチャレンジのひとつは、遅かれ早かれ不協和音が生じるということだ。対人的にうまくいかないことから摩擦が生じ、オンラインでの通信のせいや、文化や言語の違いから事態が悪化する。技術的には最適の解決方法でも、中傷や非難が高まるにつれてぼやけてしまう。

One of the challenges of ad-hoc open source development is that, sooner or later, disagreements arise. Personality conflicts generate friction (often exacerbated by the limits of online communication, and cultural or linguistic differences). Optimal technical solutions may be obscured by the rising heat of names called and accusations leveled.

こんな緊張が iPhone のデベロッパ・コミュニティを襲うことになる。どうやら今がそのときのようだ。iPhone Dev Team は、どう見てもハッカーの非公式の集まりで、実力がものをいう世界だ。ところが今や、自らを iPhone “Elite” Team と呼ぶ分裂派から叱責を浴びることとなった。分裂した原因はテクニカルな問題と個人的な問題の両方だ。個人的な理由とは、Zibri と呼ばれるハッカーが IDT irc チャンネルの出入り禁止にされたこと。技術的な理由とは、”Elite” Team の Google Code wiki によれば、iUnlock や AnySIM というロック解除ユーティリティには致命的エラーが含まれていて、そのために iPhone 1.1.1 によるレンガ化（bricking）が起きたというものだ。

This tension was bound to hit the iPhone developer community, and it seems like the time is now. The iPhone Dev Team, by most accounts an informal collection of hackers run pretty much on a meritocracy basis, is now being called on the carpet by a splinter group calling itself the iPhone “Elite” Team. The cause of the split is both technical and personal: personal, a hacker called Zibri was banned from the IDT irc channel; technical, the “Elite” Team is claiming on its Google Code wiki that the iUnlock and AnySIM unlocking utilities contained critical errors that led directly to the 1.1.1-related iPhone bricking problems.

アンロッキングと 1.1.1 firmware が一緒になれば iPhone にとって毒薬となることを我々は知っている。しかし、ハッキングをしたこともなければ、アンロックをしたこともない多くのひとたちが iPhone のレンガ化（iBrickage）の被害をこうむったところをみると、ファームウェアのアップグレード自体にも危険なバグが潜んでいる可能性を排除するわけにはいかなくなった。

We know that the combination of the unlocking utilities and the 1.1.1 firmware has been a poison pill for iPhones; however, with the substantial population of never-hacked, never-unlocked phones that have also suffered iBrickage, we can’t exclude the likelihood that there are some dangerous bugs lurking in the firmware upgrade itself.

時間をかけて iPhone 内部の仕組みを探った頭のいい連中が、お互いに調和と互助の精神で協力してくれるならどんなにいいだろう。しかし現実には、たとえ iPhone のようなクールな世界でも、みんながいつも仲良くすることを望むのは求め過ぎというものだろう。

It would be nice if all the clever folk who have taken the time to explore the iPhone’s inner workings could cooperate in the spirit of harmony and mutual support… but even in a world with something as cool as the iPhone, maybe it’s too much to ask that everyone get along all the time.
