秘密主義に包まれたアップル総帥の意図を読み解くカギはインテルの計画にありそうだ。この水曜日、上海で開催されるインテル開発者フォーラム（Intel Developer Forum）がヒントになるだろう。ハンドヘルド機器やチップを内蔵したデバイス向けの低コスト・低消費電力の Atom チップの新しいラインナップが発表されるからだ。

Intel’s plans may offer the best Rosetta stone for decoding the secretive Apple chief executive’s intentions. The latest clue will come Wednesday in Shanghai at the Intel Developer Forum, where the chip maker will detail its new lineup of low-cost, low-power processors, dubbed Atom, for handheld devices and embedded gizmos.

Intel’s most intriguing customer, however, isn’t showing its intentions. This is despite the fact that analysts say Apple will almost certainly dip into Intel’s new line of processors, as they grow both more power-efficient and more powerful. “They are going to pick and choose, they are not going to be anybody’s stooge,” said Roger Kay, president of tech-tracker Endpoint Technologies Associates. Eventually, however, Kay said he sees Apple building “what I imagine is a slightly bigger version of the iPhone, or the iPod Touch” around Intel’s chips.

新しいクラスのデバイス

では Atom のスペックから分かることは何か。新しいプロセッサのスピードは1.83 Ghz に達するが、これは 2004 年当時のノートブックに匹敵するパフォーマンスだ。しかも消費電力はほんの少しで済む。その結果、ポケットサイズでバッテリーで動く新しいクラスのデバイスが登場することとなる。今四半期の後半にはそれが登場するとインテルはいっている。しかも今日の PDA とは異なり、PC クラスの OS（ウインドウズ Vista など） を駆動することも可能だという。

So what do Atom’s specs tell us? The new processors will run at speeds of up to 1.83 Ghz–cranking out performance comparable to a 2004 era notebook–while using only modest amounts of power. The result will be a new class of pocket-sized, battery-powered gizmos, which Intel says will begin shipping later this quarter. And, unlike today’s personal digital assistants, Intel boasts such devices will be able to run PC-class operating systems, such as Windows Vista.

ウワサのアップル製品か

そうなるとどう考えてもアップルが開発中というウワサのデバイスになりそうだ。タブレットサイズ、Web サーフィンが可能で、タッチスクリーンを備えたヤツだ。もしそうなら、決して安くはないだろう。最新のインテルチップはキットで４５ドルはするから、新しいデバイスの価格は 500 ドルプラスマイナス 100 ドルというところか・・・

Such a gizmo sounds an awful lot like the tablet-sized, Web-surfing touch-screen gizmo some speculate Apple is working on. If so, it won’t come cheap. Intel will sell a kit including its latest chip starting at $45, and figures devices built around its new offering will go for $500, plus or minus $100.

Atom を使わないテはない

アップルが新製品を投入するのは何時かということがいつも問題になる。それでもいつかはインテルの新しいプロセッサを iPhone にも採用するだろうと Endpoint の Kay はいう。アップルが Atom プロセッサの最初出荷分については見送ることがあっても、「このプラットフォームはあまりにスグレモノなので決して見過ごせないだろう。2009 年バージョンになると特にそうだ。」

Of course, with Apple, timing is always the big mystery. But, eventually Endpoint’s Kay says an iteration of Intel’s new processors will end up in the iPhone, even if Apple decides to pass on Intel’s first b of Atom processors. “I just think the platform is too good, particularly the 2009 version,” Kay said.

［Silverthorne Layout］

インテル発表は予定通り行われ Atom の詳細が明らかになりつつある。これまで Silverthorne のコード名で呼ばれていたプロセッサが Atom になり、同プロセッサをベースとするプラットフォームが Centrino Atom［コード名 Menlow］になったということらしい。

いよいよアップルにとって欠くべからざるプロセッサの登場だが、アップルの対応や如何というわけ・・・

新チップを搭載した他社製品がまず登場、しばらくしてデザインや UI のひと際目立つアップル製品が出るというのがこれまでのパターンだが、さて今回はどうなるか。

私の世代が考えるコンピュータとは２０世紀の古くさい考え方に深く根差している。今の若者や十代のひとたちは、１０年後、２０年後、２０ポンドも重さがあるボックスの前に座って仕事をした私みたいな人間のことをきっと笑うに違いない。（その意味では両親や祖父の世代でも同じだ。）

My generation’s concept of what it means to compute is so quaint and firmly rooted in the 20th century. Young people and teens computing 10 or 20 years from now will look back and laugh at people like me (and, most likely, their own parents and grandparents) who sat down at desks and worked on 20-pound boxes.

それ以上の存在へ

変化をもたらすものは何か。いうまでもない、iPhone の登場だ。電話としてはまあまあ、マルチメディアのデバイスとしてはすばらしい。しかし、Apple SDK が約束する未来と Exchange ActiveSync ソフト導入によって、iPhone はそれ以上の存在に変化しようとしている。

What precipitated these changes? The arrival of the Apple iPhone , of course. It’s an okay phone and an excellent multimedia device, but now, with the promise the Apple SDK holds and the introduction of the Exchange ActiveSync software, it’s about to become much, much more.

近視眼的な私の考え

iPhone には物理的キーボードが欠けているし、バーチャルキーボードなんて使いものにならないと私は激しく批判したものだ。しかし私の考えは近視眼的だった。私がキーボードを使えないことなんかアップルは気にもしなかった。アップルが狙うヒップな２０代の若者はすぐさま iPhone を受け入れ、メッセージ、テキスト、Safari の検索などでバーチャルキーボードを使う方法を考え出したのだ。私が出来なくてもどうでもよかった。

I know I railed against the iPhone’s lack of physical keys and what I saw as a nearly impossible-to-use virtual keyboard. My shortsighted evaluation, however, failed to take into account that Apple couldn’t care less if I could use the keyboard. Its target market (young, hip 20-somethings) adopted the iPhone immediately and figured out how best to use the virtual keyboard to message, text, and search in the Safari browser, and so on. So what if I couldn’t figure it out.

未来を変えるという意味で iPhone が頭抜けている理由のひとつは、みんなが欲しがるということだ。若い世代にとって iPhone は同世代のクールさ、仲間意識、よき思い出へのパスポートともいうべきもので、だからみんなが買うのだ。ヒップに見せたいビジネスマンも買い求めるが、買い控えるひとの方が多かった。［iPhone の］Ｅメールが同期されないのでは、どうしても BlackBerry を持ち運ばなければならなくなる。確かに BlackBerry Pearl はセクシーだが、iPhone のすばらしさには及ばない。

One of the reasons Apple’s iPhone stands to be a game changer is because people lust after it. Young people buy it because it’s something of a passport to coolness, acceptance, and good times among their demographic. Businesspeople who like to appear hip want it, too, but many have held off. Without synchronized e-mail, they’d still have to carry their BlackBerrys. Sure, the BlackBerry Pearl is sexy, but it doesn’t have the iPhone’s cachet.

iPhone の発表以来、アップルは新しい道を踏み出した。マックだけでなく、ポケットに入れて持ち運べるデバイス上でも動く OS X の新しいバーションを開発したことによって、これまで我々が「コンピュータ」と呼んだものと「家電製品」のデバイスと呼んできたものとの間の区別がはっきりしなくなっている。

Since it first unveiled the iPhone more than a year ago, Apple has been heading down a new path. Having developed a version of the OS X operating system that runs not only on a Macintosh but also on a device that fits in your pocket, Apple has blurred the distinction between what we know of as a “computer” and what we think of as a “consumer electronics” device.

iPod Touch

その一番いい例は、かつてこの欄でも触れたことがあるが、つい見過ごされ勝ちな iPod の親戚、すなわち iPod Touch だ。外見上は iPhone から電話機能を省いたものにしか見えない。電話回線にもインターネットにも接続できず、オンラインにするためには Wi-Fi に頼らざるを得ない。音楽やビデオを再生できるほか、Ｅメール、YouTube ビデオ、株式情報、天気予報なども探してこれる。グーグルマップを使ってＡ地点からＢ地点へナビとして使うこともできる。

The best evidence of this point, which I’ve argued before in this space, is the iPhone’s overlooked cousin, the iPod Touch (BusinessWeek.com, 1/11/07). On its face the Touch may seem to be little more than an iPhone without the phone features. It can’t connect to cellular networks for calls or Internet access, relying instead on Wi-Fi to go online. Aside from playing music and video, it can fetch e-mail, clips from YouTube, stock quotes, and weather forecasts. It can also help you navigate from point A to point B via Google Maps.

アップルの COO Tim Cook が、２月２７日の Goldman Sachs のカンファレンスで Touch のことを「モバイル Wi-Fi プラットフォーム」（mobile Wi-Fi platform）と呼んだことは注目に値する。アップルの他の重役連と話してみても、今や Touch は iPod ファミリーの主力製品だといっている。Nano でも Shuffle でもなく Touch なのだ。（iPhone はそれ自体独立のカテゴリーの別製品だ。）

Notably, Apple Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook has taken to publicly describing the Touch as a “mobile Wi-Fi platform,” as he did in remarks at a Goldman Sachs conference on Feb. 27. And in conversations with other Apple executives, I’ve been told that the Touch can now be considered the flagship product of the iPod family (not counting the iPhone, which remains a product category unto itself). Not the Nano. Not the Shuffle. The Touch.

Touch に対するこうした新しい考え方は、Touch がいろいろなものに分化していく可能性を示唆している。iPhone や iPod Touch のスクリーンでウェブサイトの記事やＥメールが読めるということなら、書籍や雑誌を読むのにだって適しているといえないか。すべては iTunes Store にコンテンツを供給する側の意思に懸っている。iTunes Store はすべてのデジタルメディア配信の中心たり得るのだ。レコード店、ビデオショップ、本屋、ニューススタンド、それらを全部兼ね備えたものに・・・

This emerging realization about the Touch has multiple possible ramifications. If the screens on the iPhone and the iPod Touch are suitable for reading Web site content and e-mail, why shouldn’t they be suitable for reading books and magazines? All that’s needed are willing content suppliers for the iTunes Store, which could become a central distribution point for all kinds of digital media—a record store, a video shop, a bookstore, and a newsstand all at once.

ニューヨークタイムズの John Markoff を初めとして、論理的に考えれば次に出るのはアマゾンの Kindle に類似したアップルリーダー（Apple reader）になるという。当たっている点もあると思う。つまるところアマゾンだって今や音楽ビジネスに関わっているのだ。コピープロテクションフリーの MP3 ダウンロードという点で iTunes と完全に競合している。アップルは今やエンターテインメントの殆どの分野を扱っている。音楽、テレビ番組、映画、オーディオブック、それに間もなく iPhone および iPod Touch のソフト販売も開始する。デジタル出版物がつぎに来ると考えるのは理にかなっている。

John Markoff of The New York Times and others have mused that a next logical step might be an Apple reader akin to Amazon.com’s Kindle (BusinessWeek.com, 11/19/07). I think they may be at least partially right. After all, Amazon.com is now in the music business, selling unprotected MP3 downloads in direct competition with iTunes. Now that Apple offers most major types of entertainment media on iTunes—music, TV shows, movies, audio books—and will soon be in the business of selling applications for the iPhone and iPod Touch, it stands to reason digitized print media could be next.

スクリーンサイズ

デジタル出版物も加わるということになれば、Touch の（そして iPhone についても）スクリーンサイズが問題となる。Kindle のスクリーンサイズは６インチで、iPod Touch の２倍近くある。Touch と Kindle 双方を使ってみた経験からすると、５分以上文字を読むのには大きいスクリーンが望ましいといわざるを得ない。

But once print media becomes part of the equation, the size of the screen on the Touch, and for that matter the iPhone, becomes an issue. The screen on the Kindle measures 6 inches diagonally, nearly twice that of the iPod Touch. Having used both the Touch and the Kindle, I have to say that the larger screen is preferable for reading anything that takes longer than five minutes.

読書のためだけ？

そんな製品をもしアップルが準備中なら、読書のためだけというのでは夢がなさすぎると思う。iPod Touch が本当にこれから出る新しいデバイスファミリーの先駆けだというのなら、スクリーンの大きいその後継機はデジタル出版物を読む以上のことが出来る必要がある。

Yet even if Apple does actually have one in the pipeline, I’d say that a reading device alone would be thinking too small. If the iPod Touch is indeed the vanguard of a new family of media devices, any larger-screened descendant would have to do much more than simply add the ability to read digital versions of the printed page.

仕事もこなせる「何か」

iPod Touch バージョンの OS X がアップルのいうように強力なものだとしたら、いずれ出てくる「アップルリーダー」はエンターテインメントのプラットフォームであるに止まらず、仕事もこなせる「何か」になり得るのではないか。マックノートブックは Wi-Fi を通じて遠隔地から自宅のマックにあるファイルへアクセスを可能にする「Back to My Mac」機能を持っているが、この機能をアップルリーダーでも使えるようにしたらどうか。そうすれば、自宅のコンピュータに忘れてきたプレゼンテーションのファイルをとってくることもできれば、誰かに教えてやった曲をかけてみることもできるだろう。そんなハンドヘルドに十分な容量のストレージ、たとえば 64GB のフラッシュメモリーを付けてやれば、音楽やビデオライブラリーだけでなくいろんな重要書類も常時持ち運べることになる。

If the iPod Touch version of OS X is truly as powerful as Apple says it is, shouldn’t this prospective reader serve as more than an entertainment platform, as something that can help you get things done? Why not adapt Apple’s “Back to My Mac” feature, which lets you gain access to files on your home Mac remotely from a Mac notebook, to let you do the same via Wi-Fi from your Apple reader? You’d be able to grab that presentation you forgot on your home computer, or play that song you were just telling someone about. Give that handheld sufficient storage, say 64GB of flash memory, and you just might go to the trouble of carrying all sorts of important documents around, not just your music and video library.

ポータブルミニコンピュータ

書類を表示できるだけではない。スクリーン上でそれらを編集して手を加えたいと思うかもしれない。そうなればこれはポータブルミニコンピュータ（portable minicomputer）だ。キーボードはどうする？　バーチャルの Qwerty キーボードをマルチタッチスクリーンで使えばいい。iPhone や Touch のものより少し大きめで、二本指でのタイピングが可能なもの。Bluetooth のワイヤレス接続にすれば（iPhone では可能だが Touch にはない）、普通のワイヤレスキーボードという選択肢も加わる。

And why stop at simply displaying documents? You’d want to edit them right there on the screen. That would make it a portable minicomputer. So where’s the keyboard? Right on the screen. Put that multitouch screen to work displaying a virtual Qwerty keyboard, only bigger than that found on the iPhone and the Touch, and suitable for two-fingered hunt-and-peck typing. Add a Bluetooth wireless connection—which the iPhone has, but the Touch lacks—and you’d also have the option of using a conventional wireless keyboard.

Gizmo Project

Skype でインターネット電話をするのに Bluetooth ワイヤレスヘッドホンは便利だが、Gizmo Project のクライアントもいずれそうなる。ソニーの Wi-Fi メッセージングデバイスである Mylo ではすでに Skype が利用できるし、Cisco Systems や Netgear の Wi-Fi ハンドセットにも内蔵されている。SIPphone の Gizmo Project 通話ソフトがノキアのウェブタブレットで利用できるようになって久しい。

Bluetooth would also come in handy for a wireless headset to make Internet phone calls on the Skype and Gizmo Project clients that would inevitably follow. Skype is already available on Sony’s Mylo, a Wi-Fi messaging device, and has been embedded in a series of Wi-Fi handsets from Cisco Systems and Netgear. And SIPphone’s Gizmo Project calling software has been available on Nokia’s Web tablets for some time.

Atom 効果

このワイヤレスのマイクロマック（micro-Mac）には本格的マックノートブックほどのパワーはないが、それでもそこらのハンドヘルドよりは多くのことがこなせるなかなか強力なデバイスだ。このところインテルはノートブック PC とスマートフォンの中間に位置する新しいタイプのデバイスをプッシュしているが、それは低消費電力の Atom チップを備え、新しいカテゴリーの創出が期待されているものだ。2006 年当時初めてこの話を聞いたときはピンとこなかったが、当時はアップルのようなクリエイティブな会社（いまやインテルの花形顧客だ）がなにをやらかすかということに思いが至っていなかった。

This wireless micro-Mac wouldn’t have the processing power of a full-fledged Mac notebook, but it could serve as a pretty robust dinghy that would do plenty more than most handhelds. Intel, which has been talking about a new class of devices that lie somewhere between notebook PCs and smartphones, has a new low-power chip called the Atom that it hopes will drive the creation of this new category. I’ll admit I’ve been skeptical of the idea since it was first floated in 2006. But I hadn’t been thinking of what a company as innovative as Apple, now Intel’s marquee customer, might do with this idea.

The conjecture and speculation about what devices the iPod Touch may spawn will certainly be interesting to watch in the coming months. Given the signals it’s sending, Apple is just starting down what looks to be a fascinating path.

アジアの製造メーカーにコネのある信頼すべき情報筋が、今朝電話してきていくつかネタをくれた。アップル新製品のホットニュースが、数週間あるいは数か月のうちに大見出しを飾るという。ホットな新製品とは iPod Touch、iPhone それに新しい ultra-portable laptop だ。

そう書き出した Jim Goldman は、iPod Touch の増産、登場が早まりそうな 3G iPhone に加えて、ウルトラポータブルについて次のようにいう。

And then there’s this: this source says he has now heard from manufacturing partners in Asia that Apple is preparing to unveil a new, ultra portable laptop computer at the company’s Macworld event next month in San Francisco.

１２インチサイズで 1500 ドル

ブログでは盛んにウワサが流れているが、情報ソースによれば、数週間もすればアップル最小のラップトップが登場する確たる証拠を掴んだという。それによれば、このラップトップは１２インチのスクリーンを備え、現行の MacBook Pro より 50% 薄く、ハードドライブの代わりにフラッシュメモリーを内蔵し、小売価格は 1500 ドル程度だという。

The blogs have speculated about this, but he says he now has hard evidence that the smallest laptop ever from Apple is only weeks away. He says the device will feature a 12-inch screen and will be 50 percent thinner–and lighter–than current versions of the MacBook Pro. He says the product will not have a hard-drive, but rely on Flash memory instead and likely retail for around $1,500.

ウルトラポータブルというのでスワと思ったら、１２インチというのでいささかガッカリ・・・。やっぱりアップルは、フルサイズキーボードを備えたものしか念頭にないのか。

軽量小型のマックのカテゴリーについてはいろんな呼び名があって、そのイメージが微妙にぶれているような気がする。

現行の MacBook/MacBook Pro ラインより小さなものがサブノートブック（subnotebook）というのは分かるが、ウルトラポータブル（ultra-portable）とか UMPC（ultra mobile PC）となると、みんなはどんなものをイメージしているのだろうか。

例えば、つぎのような機種はどのカテゴリーに属するのだろうか。

・Sony VAIO model C1

・OLPC

・Asus Eee PC

・工人舎 SH-series

・HTC Omni [mockup]

これらのカテゴリーの共通点として、小さいながらもキーボードを備え、スクリーンが蓋になっているというフォームファクター（形状、form factor）がある。

マックの世界では、MacBook より小さいマックが存在しないことから呼び名もまちまちだが、PC の世界だと統一的な名称があるのだろうか。

さらにマックの世界では、iPhone/iPod touch が登場したことから話がややっこしくなった。

iPhone/iPod touch をより大きくした形状のデバイス（最早マックとは呼べない？）の可能性が出てきたからだ。

ハンドヘルド（携帯型、handheld）やタブレット（tablet）と呼ばれることが多く、むき出しのスクリーンというフォームファクターが共通のように思える。

たとえば、OQO Model 02 など。想像上の MacBook touch もこの線だ。

Apple-Style アンケート［vol.4］をみると、UMPC（42%）が圧倒的人気で、タブレット（11%）と大きな差がついている。

投票された方の UMPC やタブレットのイメージはどんなものだったのだろうか。

筆者がどうしても欲しいのは、いつでもどこでもインターネットにアクセスできるウェブ端末だ。フォームファクターとしては、iPhone/iPod touch をより大きくしたタブレットに限りなく近いもの。

アンケート結果からみると、そんな希望は例外的なものにみえるけれど・・・

iPhone をハンドヘルドコンピュータとして捉え、その可能性を探った興味深い記事がある。

事実 Steve Jobs は、アップルの新しいデスクトップ OS が iPhone や iPod でも動くとまでいっているのだ。ということは、これらのデバイスが「ハンドヘルドのアップル OS コンピュータ」だということを認めたことになる。

… In fact, Steve Jobs even announced that Apple’s new desktop OS will work on the iPhone and iPod — Confirming that these devices will also be hand-held Apple OS computers.

アップルの製品ラインナップに、ポケットサイズでいつでも持ち運べるコンピュータが加わるのだ。それも無数のワイヤレス構想が、有料の携帯電話に取って代わろうとするまさにこの時に・・・。このことは、ハンドヘルドコンピュータ革命を押し進めていく上でアップルが際立って有利な立場に立つこと意味する。

So Apple will have a product line of pocket-size, always-with-you computers, just as hundreds of WiFi initiatives begin to take over paid cellular. This will put Apple in a uniquely strong position to drive a revolution in handheld computing.

ケイタイは補助的なデバイス

今のところ固定電話回線からインターネットに接続することは辛うじて「タダで」できる。しかし真のモバイル環境を達成しようとすると、速度の遅い携帯電話でインターネットを利用して掛かった分の料金を支払うか、あるいは密度にばらつきのある WiFi ネットワークを利用するかのいずれしかない。物事の変化のテンポは早いというのに、ことモバイル・コンピューティングに関する限り、高額のカネを支払うかそれともばらつきのある無線ネットワークを選ぶかのどちらかだ。このため誰もが、通信のベースステーションとしてダサイ PC を使わざるを得ず、携帯機器はいわば補助的な道具にならざるを得ないのだ。

You see, right now it is marginally “free” to go online from a fixed line. But to go truly mobile, we either have to pay by-the-minute to use the slow cellular internet, or we have to deal with spotty WiFi coverage. Things are changing fast, but exclusively mobile computing remains an expensive or spotty trade-off. This forces nearly everyone to use a clunky computer as a central base of communication, and handhelds remain sort of ancillary things.

PC からハンドヘルドへ

然るに WiFi ネットワークが拡大すれば、携帯機器によるコンピュータの活躍する余地が出て来る。アップル OS が iPhone で動くことになれば、そこら中のダサイ PC で出来る重要なことはすべて、ポケットサイズのハンドヘルドコンピュータで出来ることになる。そうなれば、好きなときにインターネットに接続できるか、無料の VOIP［Voice over IP：IP電話］にアクセスが可能かという利便性だけが、選択の決定要因となる。その時点で、ポケットに収まらない機器は不要なものとなり、世界はハンドヘルドおよびそのドック［cradle：クレードル］に転換するのだ。

However, spreading WiFi coverage is creating an opening for handheld-centric computing. And once Apple OS runs on the iPhone, pocket-size handhelds will be able to do all the important stuff a clunky PC can. A [sic] that point, the convenience of always having internet and free VOIP access in your pocket will become the only decision variable. At that point, the device that can’t fit in your pocket becomes redundant and the world switches to handhelds and cradles.

OS が小さくなれるかどうかが問題

マイクロソフトには、ダサイ PC を脱して新しいハンドヘルドの領域で主導権を握る準備が全く出来ていないように見える。間違いなく新しいインターフェイス（iPhone の特許で保護されたキーボードや指の動きをセンサーチェックする）は必要だ。しかしもっと決定的に重要なことは、膨れ上がった Windows Vista（CE バージョンではなく）をハンドヘルドのフラッシュメモリーに搭載できるようにすることだ。こうなるとアップルの小さい OS は決定的に有利だ。膨らみ過ぎたウインドウズを小さなフラッシュメモリーチップに載せて機器を駆動できるようになるまでには少なくともあと一年は必要だ。どうやら、ウインドウズが必要不可欠な機能を備えたプラットフォームとして来年登場する可能性は望み薄のようだ。

Microsoft seems completely unprepared to push its dominance with clunky computers into this new handheld realm. It will certainly need new interfaces like the iPhone’s patented keyboard and finger driven actuation. But more critically, Microsoft will need to load bloated Windows Vista (not the CE version) on an flash memory handheld. The smaller Apple OS has a critical advantage here. It will be at least another year before flash memory chips are big enough to power a standard Windows bloatware device. It seems that Windows will be stuck without next year’s absolutely-must-have functionality – platform ubiquity.

iPhone の変身

臨界量を超える数の人々がウインドウズを去れば、これまでマイクロソフトが持っていた唯一の力の源、すなわちユーザーネットワークは消滅してしまう。その時点でアップルの携帯機器は、単なる 100 万人の好奇心の対象から、１台が 600 ドルするグローバルなコミュニケーションのための標準/ネットワークに変わることになる。そしていずれ何十億というデスクトップコンピュータにとって変わるのだ。

Once a critical mass of people leaves Windows, the only source of power Microsoft ever really had (its user network) will evaporate. At that point, Apple handhelds stop being a million user curiosity and starts looking like a $600/unit global communication standard/network that will eventually replace nearly a billion desktop computers.

ケイタイ業界も対抗できない

また iPhone は、携帯電話業界を脅かすテクノロジーとなるかもしれない。Nokia などでは、600 ドル（あるいは 3000 ドル）の iPhone（それはドックにつないで使えるアップル製コンピュータということなのだが）に匹敵するものを造り出すことはできない。携帯電話メーカーもまた、アップルが築き上げてきた優れたデスクトップソフトウェアの世界に対抗する準備が全く出来ていないように見える。

And the iPhone may also be a killer technology for the cell phone hardware industry as well. The likes of Nokia will simply not be able to create functions valuable enough to compete with $600 (or $3,000) iPhones that are also dockable Apple computers. The cell phone manufacturers as well seem wholly unprepared to compete with Apple’s well established desktop software universe.

ハンドヘルドとしての iPhone の未来

結論をいえば iPhone の後継機は、移動通信の両端であるノードコンピューティング（node computing）と通信（communication）の間隙を埋めることにより、その支配権を握るかもしれないということなのだ。ドックにつなげるアップルのコンピュータがポケットに入っていて、いつでも無料でインターネットに接続できるということなら、ほかにコンピュータや携帯電話が必要だと思ったりするだろうか。

In summary, it seems that iPhone’s offspring could dominate node computing and communication by bridging both ends of the mobility continuum. After all, If you had a dockable Apple computer in your pocket – A device that could always access the Internet for free – would you need another computer, or a cell phone?

初めて真の競争を迫られるマイクロソフト

まさにこのようなプラットフォームの変化こそ、Steve Jobs が２０年間待ち続けたものなのだ。マイクロソフトは、これまでで初めて技術革新の一番根幹の部分で競争することを強いられる。しかも今度は、アップル製ハンドヘルドがウインドウズ PC で出来ることならなんでも、いやそれ以上のことを出来るのだ。今回は、技術革新と Steve Jobs の戦術（それは iPod 登場のずっと以前から熟慮されたものに間違いない）があまりに早く展開するので、老朽化しつつあるマイクロソフトには対応することが困難なのだ。さらに加えてマイクロソフトには対応しなければならない二つの戦線があるのだ。（この点については「グーグルはいかにしてノードコンピューティングを殺すか」を参照のこと。）

This change of platform is exactly what Steve Jobs has been waiting two decades for. It will force Microsoft to compete on the basis of innovation for the first time ever. But this time, Apple handhelds will do everything Windows devices can do and much more. This time technological change and Steve Jobs’ battle plan (no doubt conceived well before the launch of the iPod) will unfold too fast for aging Microsoft to react to. ポケットに入れて持ち運べるハンドヘルド型のコンピュータがアップルから本当に出るのならこれはスゴいことだ。

Steve Jobs が出陣式でいった「とてつもないヤツ」（the stuff …  “off the charts”）というのがこれだとしたら心騒ぐではないか・・・

こうしてみると、iPhone に搭載された OS X というのが何者なのか俄然興味が湧いてくる。

なんだかおもしろいことになりそうだ。
